  2. selvage is a misnomer really it defines the side of any woven fabric and is a shortening of the term "self edge".

selvage denim as it is refered to on this board is actually shuttle loomed denim.

so a fly shuttle goes back and forward bringing the weft through the warp. As it turns to come back it creates a clean selvage. In shuttle less denim the thread is shot across and then cut off creating a frayed selvage.

check out [url=" http://www.imperial.st"] <a href="http://www.imperial.st" target="_blank">http://www.imperial.st </a> they have a pretty nice explanation of the whole raw selvage thing...

Also, i object to the comments about the denim in picture.

Firstly is definitely shuttle loomed. Secondly, no way to tell from that photograph whether it is dodgy or not. However, judging by prices quoted must be made in CHina/INdia.

Also, another interesting fact is that shuttle looms are not a specific machine. Back then there were many different brand and sizes. Narrow width (28"/29") right up to shuttle looms that were over 72" justas wide as some air projectile stuff. So be careful when you throw around terminology like narrow width, in fact i heard evisu/edwin etc don't even use narrow width looms on the stuff that goes into US and UK...

  3. Imagine if a company was run by a person rather than a board and shareholders. If that company was big enough, and the person who owned the company didn't care about "maximising profits", he/she could do some amazing things.

Imagine setting up a major manufacturing factory in Vietnam/Thailand/Indonesia, paying the workers five times average (still nothing compared to western world) and putting in place world standard working conditions.

The company would still be profiting, but the workers would be benefitting as well. Can you imagine what it would do to the working standards in that country and consumer expectations of the big companies.

Few problems, what sort of people get to the top of big companies to make these decisions, usually ones with the want for money. Most companies of that size are public and answer to only one thing, the profit margin (dictated by shareholder's wanting return on money)

Also, changing these dynamics might ruin the country's economy by making all the other brands pack up and leave to the next country.

  4. I'm a big believer in the Wrangler for ladies. I can't remember the style number but they used to do a broken weave bootcut for ladies. Broken Weave is much better for really skinny jeans without stretch.

Is higher than the current trend (but it's going that direction anyway), and they used to do a raw and a rinse wash.

  5. Actually, DannyHomeGrown

I am not going to pass judgement until i've seen the gear in real life.

In fact, i'm not going to hate on it, like most other people have done. I say its good you guys are getting off your arse and have a product.

    Good effort.

  6. Don't get me wrong, i hate t-shirt companies who spurt out printed pre-made (american apparel, hanes, gildan etc) t-shirts as if they are fashion designers.

But that said, look at the stores the thing is in. Makes you wonder, they must have a genius marketing the thing.

  7. What is Bape, Evisu, whole japanese aesthetic in Western Countries? Imagine how much manga/anime inspired cartoons have made in the West (not sure what they are all called but think as far back as transformers to things today like dragonball Z/pokemon/spirited away)?

Not to mention the whole hello kitty craze!

Also, same can be said about Euro labels all over the world. Italian labels especially.

  8. has anyone thought about the rivet, can someone please think about the rivet!

Hopefully he is safe and sound somewhere, together with other metal fastening devices. Obviously he has lost his utility but amongst his peers surely he will be able to find some happiness.

(NB. the choice of a male gender for the rivet was arbitrary and not based on any evidence physical or metaphysical)

  9. Wow, i didn't know that half a million you say. That must be a good percentage of your country in OZ.

  10. no big buttons work well. I prefer to little ones.

Fit is great, best i've worn.

In person is more APC like than nudie, i agree belt loops are similar. But please how can you be critical of emulating others designs Nudie have taken bits and pieces from everywhere!! so to APC and edwin etc. i mean how many combinations are there...

I agree about leather tags, but i'm guessing they think they are original, I wonder how many of the Japanese repros make it down there. lol. I have actually sent them a mail about this same point. And i am not kidding this was their reply (i know hard to believe given my usual silly posting but is genuine reply)

... John (my actual name here) thanks for your concern relating to our leather tag and it's similarity to Levi's tag. We designed that tag in isolation of ever seeing a pair of levi's and we stand by our artist.

  11. yeah totally felled even the inner part of fly.

Selvage runs right down from waist band, true straight leg.

So in effect there is no visible overlocking present in jeans. One of my older pairs has folded denim lining in front pocket (where pocket lining joins denim backing in front pocket). But the more recent pair had this overlocked, probably to reduce amount of material in pocket which can be uncomfortable in fitted jeans.

One problem i had with the construction, in regards to pure authenticity is no chain stitching in leg opening. I wrote to them asking why they didn't and their answer was that chain stitching in leg opening is not necessary and regarding garment stability is a liability (ie if that seam is dragged along ground stitching will break) so they dont do it.

  12. But like i have said on many other posts.

Some of the best washes i have ever seen are on super old normal run of the mill 501 levis on middle aged men who have had their jeans for years and years.

They obviously bought them as a one wash/rinse wash. And have just worn them like a normal garment for years, no special treatment, but i guess we are an impatient generation and would like the contrast to appear quickly.

Hence, much of what is discussed on this board.
