Here’s my final submission - I was contestant #110.
I’m really grateful for this contest as it was what reminded me what I love about this denim world and this community - I got into it really last minute, mostly out of a need for a new pair of jeans as my last pair were running to rags, but also because I’d missed out on the last two tcb contests and loved how intimate and mutually supportive those contests had been, full of personal updates and such unique results from each of the contestants. Though this contest was a little more sparse as far as personal updates went, I’m really happy to see how many of us gave their pairs consistent wear. I sort of abandoned mine for a good part of the contest, though they had their fair share of fun experiences: moving to New Mexico, renovating a house, rebuilding two trucks, doing a lot of tattooing and painting (somehow only getting a couple of paint splatters and almost no ink on them … cause I learned how to tune my machines properly lol), a good deal of gardening, and a lot of cooking… and they stayed mostly together through all of it! Unfortunately they were down for about 5 months of the contest because I kept putting off repairs, first on the knees, then the seat, then the hems, and now after patching the right rear pocket the left is starting to go also… but i have no plans to let em go yet, they’re probably my favourite jeans I’ve ever had. I’ll stop reminiscing and put up some pictures now.
Sort of by accident, one of the knees was patched by hand at first, the other was darned on my sewing machine. I used unwashed scraps from the hems for all of the patches and really like how the fabric puckered a bit as it shrunk against the underlying worn denim.
Compared to the left side, which has never given me any problems, I’ve had to make four separate repairs on the hand stitched knee. Pretty clear difference in strength, lol.
The hems are getting kinda shredded - not visible in this pic but the creases where they’ve been folded are full of little holes along the back side.
The back is where they’ve needed the most attention and what made me set them aside for almost a third of the contest. I darned both sides of the seat and later stitched a patch for the right rear pocket - a bit of the patch fabric can be seen fraying out from the bottom corner where I re stitched the pocket to the leg. Probably gonna have to do the same on the left soon, that hole appeared out of nowhere after their last wash.
Here’s the inside - I was lucky to get two indigo dyed pocket bags! They haven’t faded the most dramatically but they’ve held up really well - the wabash is just starting to tear around the pocket opening but otherwise haven’t had any problems.
And finally, a couple fit pics:
Thanks for looking and sharing everyone, I love seeing everyone’s submissions!

Some early wear on my flat head engineers - cheomexcel scratches up real easy I’m realizing, lol. This is pretty much just from riding my bike around and a couple tire-kickin roadside repairs on my truck, otherwise I’ve been pretty sedentary. I don’t like how the left toe is creasing but feel like there’s not much i can do about it - hopefully it smooths out a bit in the future. About a month of real wear so far & no cleaning or maintenance.
As an aside, anyone using any new leather conditioners they’re into? I’m about done with my bottle of saphir and looking to try something new.

@djungelorm It’s likely it could have been a macaw, parrot or another tropical bird; central New Mexico was a primary trade route for indigenous peoples from as far south as the western Amazon and all the way up to northern British Columbia. Chetro Ketl (in Chaco Canyon natl park) is one of the more important trading centres, where during excavation in the 1930s researchers found whale teeth and parrot feathers, Amazonian clay pottery, and stones / gems / etc, among other artifacts, from pretty much every major geographic region between the two continents. The site was abandoned in the mid 12th century, so would have preceded any written ethnographic study by spanish conquistadors by a few hundred years. But the evidence for this sort of extensive trade and exchange of goods between continents is very well documented. Really cool that you got to visit so many historical sites while you were here!

@AlientoyWorkmachine thank you! Yeah, this is probably the last winter road trip I’ll take on a bike with no wind protection My boss at work always brags to me about riding to new mexico from florida on a 400cc honda in the early 70s and i kinda had that in mind setting out on this trip, but people musta been tougher back then or something!
and you’re right, the rb filled up like 1/3 of my bag, lol, but it was fun to have something i needed to be so intentional about setting up. It came with a 120 back that needs new light seals but i am considering just shooting sx-70 on it forever; the big wide clear lens combined with the magic of that colour chemistry feels really special to me in the limited time ive used it so far.

Wore my 40s on a trip out to LA last week to pick up a new motorcycle n ride it back to Albuquerque, loosely documented on Polaroid film using this lil mamiya rb67.
Unfortunately the aperture slider seemed to have jammed somewhere along the way out and so most of these photos had way too much light for the camera to handle. Here are a handful that turned out okay:
In Brawley, California, somewhere I’ve always wanted to go (imperial county generally). About ten years ago I read the book Imperial by William T Vollman and it’s made a lasting impression on me, such a strange and magical and desperate part of the world. I only got to spend a couple of hours there as I was trying to get to tucson that afternoon, the below photos are from a quick cruise through salton city.
And a couple from penny’s diner in Yuma Arizona:
The rest of the trip after this point I was white-knuckling on the highway trying to stay upright as a massive snowstorm came in from western New Mexico and froze me solid and blew me back and forth all over the road for the last 200 miles home. got some minor frostbite on my fingers and knees but made it back in one piece lol. and the jeans have another story to tell! I’ll update w some pics of them soon. for now here’s a pic of the bike, 2000 kawasaki w650 :p

hey @bartlebyyphonics thanks for lookin out!! I ended up sizing way down on a pair of flat head engineers that i got to try on at self edge last week when i was in LA - they’re a little tight at the moment but the toes seem to hold the rest of my foot well enough.

I’m curious whether you all who own multiple pairs of engineers can share some of your experience here. I’ve tried two different pairs of engineer boots, Lofgrens and Lone Wolfs, both of which were pretty close to fitting lengthwise but were pretty much impossible to walk in because of the height of the vamp relative to my pretty low instep. I’m still interested in looking for a pair that will fit me better but am not sure which direction to go in. Something with a slightly tapered toe box, ie. Attractions, seems like it might be a safer bet, although I don’t love that look personally, but if there are any other brands you all can recommend I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

Thanks kiya, appreciate the help! I’ve heard good things about the sda tees - the suvin gold seems a bit overkill but i might go with that anyway.

Hey Kiya (or anyone else who wants to give their 2 cents), I’m looking to order a few new white t- shirts from you guys. I’ve owned tees from the Flat Head c. 2014, Stevenson c. 2015 & 2016, Lady White c. 2016 and Whitesville c. 2017, all purchased from you all, with the latter two being the only ones I still own. Really like the weight of the Flat Head and Whitesville fabrics but found their cuts a little too boxy and short for my frame. The Stevenson tee was perfect all around but since they changed the fabric they used in 2016 I’ve lost interest.
Here are a couple of pics of the tees I still have:
Lady White size Small
Whitesville size Medium
I prefer the cut of the lady white but find the Whitesville is a lot more comfortable and harder wearing. If it was like 2 inches longer it would be perfect. Do you have any suggestions for something that might be good to try? Thanks in advance!

Shoes that look better with age...

@mlwdp Well, i spilled a little used oil on them on accident and kinda rubbed that in lol… my budget black shoe cream. I’ll prolly get some saphir for when I decide to treat them like the 900 dollar pair of boots they are
