  1. state of origin - rugby?

afl doesn't have state of origin i think.

haha, i don't follow any football sports.

    fit looks great.

Cheers. They're in the tub soaking as I'm typing this. Going for a lukewarm soak, see how that turns out. Want to get all the pre-cutting starch out of the jeans, try and soften them up as much as possible.

State of Origin is Rugby League (as a Melbournian, you're forgiven for not knowing that) NSW vs QLD for the last 20 something years.

QLD has never beaten NSW at Telstra Stadium. I swear if they win there, I'll cop a pair of Eternal 811. If the Cantebury Bulldogs don't make the top 8 this year (lost their last three games), I'll probably cop a pair of Flathead or Skulls. If the Doggies win the premiership this year, I'll fork out for a pair of 45rpm Jomons as my sacrifice to the denim gods.

  2. So, NSW lost to QLD in the opening round of State of Origin (this will only make sense to anyone in NSW, AUS, I assure you). To ease my depression over the loss (we were 12 freaking points ahead at half time!!!), I went and bought myself a pair of Sam 710 19oz off 2nd. I was planning on getting these jeans anyway. I need a break from my Sexihos (which have resisted all my attempts to fade it) and needed to wear something different.

    Here's some pics.

    Initial thougths:

Thank God I only sized down one (usually buy W34 in slimfits). From reading this thread, I was thinking I didn't size down enough. At least I could button it up all the way the first time. It's hellishly tight on my rear and upper legs and that's pre-soak. I'm doubting that these would be wearable from the crotch down if I give them a hot soak like I was planning to. Maybe I should wear them raw for a little bit first. These 19ozers aren't anything like the 21oz IH denim. It feels rock hard and rough, like chainmail that's been left out to rust. Hopefully it'll loosen up over time.

  3. Pre 2000 - Levis, Jordache, Jag, Just Jeans, Jeans West, Jay Jays, Wranglers, Kmart jeans.

    2000-2005 - RM Williams 15oz moleskins (5 pairs)

2005-2006 - Diesel, Earnest Sewn, Nobody, Blue Blood, Levi STF, G-Star, Gap, RRL.

2006 to present - Eternal 868, SC 1955, SExIH, Imperial Duke, Nudie RRDS, Ande Whall Cougar, and Samurai 710 (on Monday, hopefully).

Hopeful future purchases (I blame SuFu, completely) - Skulls 5010, Eternal 811, SC (lots - love SC), PBJ 007 (getting the money together soon), SDA103.

  4. Throw them in the microwave for 5-10 seconds, that will kill anything. Just make sure to do it a few seconds at a time otherwise your nukuwave will explode hehe

    Or freeze them.

Or the metal buttons/zipper will blow up your microwave?

  5. does anyone know where to buy these ALDEN Indy Boots ?

    I live in Amsterdam..

    please pm.

For the standard 405, Alden have stores in Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland, GB, Spain and Italy. I think you're out of luck with Amsterdam, though you'd probably save more on shipping costs than I did. I had to get mine shipped from the US. For the AF64 which is the one I got, you have to order them from Alden of Carmel in the US.

  6. the man known for his holy grail eternal jeans has posted a pair of his wesco jobmaster.

    wesco-jb-1.jpg

but the funny thing is, he got frustrated lacing 8" boots all the time, he already got rid of them.

I never liked the look of any of the Wesco boots when I was dong the search around for my next pair of boots. If I was going to go with that style of boot, I'd go with the White's Smoke Jumper. I settled on Russell Mocs instead (Argh, July can't come FAST enough).

I thought the jobmaster was a 10 inch upper? I wonder if he got them custom made...

  7. Interesting... my experience is completely different. I find that I wear an 8H in the RMW Craftsman, but a 9D in Indy. The standard formula for figuring out an RMW size (length) is to drop down one from their US size. The tricky part usually seems to be the width. The definitive size comparison guide between RM Williams and others is here: http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=21179

I'd have to agree. I'm a 8G in RMW and 9E for my Aldens. The RMW Henley's are a little wider than the Craftsman, I'd be closer to an 8H actually. I fit into a pair of 8.5E in the Aldens, but I wanted that little extra bit of toe space. The 9E has a really spacious feel, which is good for what I use them for. I'd probably fit a 8.5E or 9D on some of those dress Alden shoes.

  8. bootcoll.jpg

This is a crappy phone camera pic of my current collection. I'll be adding a pair of Russell Imperials and maybe a pair of AE cordovan shoes by the end of the year. From left to right... Blundstones (can't remember what code, most likely 331) UK8, RM Williams Henley Chestnut UK8G (G is the mid fit, similar to a D), RM Williams Henley Black, Alden AF64 Fan Indy US9E, Redwing 1155 Pecos US9EEE and Windsor Smith moc stich loafer UK8E.

I mis-sized the Redwings, too wide. I stuffed in two insoles for a nice snug fit. The Blundstones normally fit wide on their boots, no narrow choices. They're the most comfortable by far of any of my boots. I use them as my primary riding boot. The RM Williams are actually a touch too narrow, but I got both pairs on sale. They're alright as dress boots, and so long as I have dress socks they're fine. Any thicker socks, they'd be too uncomfortable. The Aldens are my daily wearer for the moment. Usually when I get sick of wearing boots, I'd change over to my Vans slip-ons or Converse All-Stars, but generally I wear boots 80% of the time during Autumn/Fall-Winter and for Spring-Summer nights.

  9. Just thought I post a quick update on my AF64 Indy's. I've been wearing them for a few hours on the weekend and gave them their first hard walk yesterday.

They feel good. Snug, comfortable, with no pinching or strafing. Unfortunately, they aren't as comfortable as my Blundstones (no boot on the planet is, I think), but the additional upper ankle support from the laces feel much more secure than the elastic band that's on the leather upper of the Blundstones (I broke my ankle playing paintball a few years ago, and they're aren't as strong as they were when I was younger). They're more comfortable than my RM Williams boots though and the Vibram with rubber midsole absorbs heel strikes on the pavement better. No wear to mention as yet. The oil leather creases nicely though, and I'll probably give it a treatment of Obenauf's in a few months time to keep it nice and moist.

Tossing up on whether to put in a thin foot insert. That leather insole is hard, and since I sized a half size up, there is room for it. I might give it a few more days.

  10. The Red wing 877 are $349 and the 875 are $320.

I advize you to try on a pair if you have the possibility, since sizing with Red wing isn't easy!

Gah! Same price as what I would have paid in Aus for them. If I can't try them on either way, might as well go with the proxy. This won't be until late this year anyway. My birthday's in October, hmmm...:D

LeicaLad - I'm normally an 8 in Blundstones (which is a big 8 compared to say, the 8 of a RMW). If US sizes are a 1/2 size up than UK on average, then theoretically I should be a 8.5 in the Indy's. I got the 405s in 8.5E and they fit almost too well (not much room in the foot to move). Not uncomfortably tight or anything, but I was worried there might be problems with the fit once I started actually walking in them for any real distance. I sent a fax of my foot with true measurements to Adam at Carmel. He recommended a 9E in the AF64. Good comfortable fit. Roomy in the toes, the way I like it, but well fitted and snug on the top of the foot and the ankle.

What really pissed me off is that if the retailer of the 405s just gave them a quick 30 second inspection, could have saved me a lot of time and hassle. No matter, like I said, the AF64 suits my needs better anyway.

I just gave them a quick walk to go buy some bread at the store. Feels good. Will give regular updates, that is until my Russells get here.

  11. The 877/875 are the same price here ( Belgium)...which I found very expensive for a pair of work boots but they're really great!!

Which additional options have you taken on your Imperial boots?

How much were they in US$ if you don't mind me asking? If it were a little more expensive, I'd just buy it here (can't try them on in Sydney. Only know of a store in Melbourne that sells them). But we're talking almost double the price, and I think Redwing has done a Sugarcane-esk crack down on their US account holders selling their boots to Australians at normal US prices. Some of the online boot stores don't even return my emails about the 877. Not too fussed at the moment about it, but yeah, I love that orange-brown leather and crepe sole. You'll be seeing me with a pair by year's end for sure.

I got the boot in chrome red-brown leather (not too impressed by the French veal, at least not +$65 more impressed), with leather uppers, steel shank and Vibram Montagna sole. There's not all that many options on the Imperials, since its got a fair few built in.

  12. I've been wanting a pair of Alden Indy boots for a long time now, but I'm scared to buy them online due to the sizing.( and it's impossible to find them over here.)

My Red wing boots 875 have a perfect fit for me and are a US 10.5D, so I've been wondering what would be my alden 405 size?Still haven't found the answer.

Tell me about it. I took a huge risk getting these boots online. If Chicken's feet weren't exactly the same as my own, I don't think I would have risked it.

Down the line, I'm prolly going to try and get someone to proxy buy a pair of Redwing 877s for me, because they sell them here for $AU405 which is about $US330. They sell them for 180USD or something. wtf?

My pair of current Blunnies (pair number 4 for me) haven't had too much wear. About 3/4 of a years worth. I use them as my primary motorcycle boots now. I wish I still had my first pair of blunnies. I got them in 1998. Used them at the Orica chemical plant that I worked at for a year. Had all sorts of goodies splashed in on it; sodium hypochloride, hydrocloric acid, ferric acid, nitric acid, caustic soda, etc... then I wore them for about 3 years about 30,000km of motorcycle riding and about 1000km of walking. They completely fell apart, to the point where the steel shank got exposed and made a clanking noise every time I walked on a hard surface. And they were still as comfortable as the day I got them *(not as water tight unfortunately - my feet got wet constantly) My mom threw them out. Of course I didn't do anything like polish them or oil the leather. The leather upper went grey and disintegrated. I'll be taking better care of my AF64s, of course. I can't buy another pair of these for $80.

  13. I'm the only one I know who wears raw jeans (except for my brother who worships his ONE pair of slim jims - he's worn them for the last 5 months straight with no washing). I met up with a few guys I haven't seen in a while. They had matching ultra distressed tsubi's (before they became Ksubi, bleh), stone washed to almost white and holes and tears everywhere. I asked them if they had fallen off a motorcycle or something, and they told me they were new and had bought them LOOKING like that. I was like, wtf?

So yeah, I too believe that the sufu crowd is a very small % of the population (can't believe how many are in Sydney though).

The trouble with fake honeycombs is that they don't fit, and if the jeans shrink over time, the combs will climb up. I saw a guy with combs up to the middle of his hamstrings. it was the funniest thing I ever saw, I almost laughed out loud.

I think you've got the general idea about what appeals to the majority of sufu members here. slim straight, long inseam, button fly, selvedge, medium rise, good pocket placement, hardware (donut buttons, hidden rivets etc) and high quality, shuttle loomed double ring spun denim (over 15oz please). Personally, I like big back pockets with loud stitching. I love the Imperial back stiching and old pocket size. I bought a pair of Ande Whall V3 because of the thumbs.:D

  14. Damn, those AF64 Indys are exactely what I'm looking for!!!

Do you have any pics of the Russels you've ordered?thank you

The 'heavy oil leather' is actually a lot darker in real life than in the photos on Alden of Carmel. Kind of reminds me of heavily oiled drizabones (anyone aussie would know this). Really soft and moist, almost wet, sort of...

I don't have any pics of the Russell Imperials that I ordered out. Here's a link to the description page.

    http://www.russellmoccasin.com/boots_traditional/traditional_imperial.html

I ordered them in late March and won't get them until mid July. About 4 months in total, about 1 month longer than shoes, I think. I liked the pair of hikers that familyman had and there was this pic of this old guy with his 20+ year old Imperials on the Russell site, and I said to myself, 'I gotta get these boots!' I ordered the one in red brown leather. I'm not a fan of black boots. Black shoes and brown boots for me. Might start saving up for a pair of black cordovan AEs after the russells get here.

I actually got a pair of Alden Indy's first, but it had a definite defect in the welt (not to mention grease stains from about 100 people trying on the boots and the box was old and ratty). I returned them for a full refund. Started talking to Adam at AoC. Eventually went with the AF64s which I think would be more suited to what I'm going to use them for, anyway. Might get a pair of 405s later in the year (from a different supplier).

I'm going to use them as my primary walking boot. I walk about 6-8km a day. From home to the station, from the station to school, between classes, and then back again. I've been wearing my Blundstones up till now, and these boots have got a lot to live up to considering the comfortableness of my Blunnies (may be comfortable, but not really longlasting, and with the PU injected sole, unresolable. But then for $AUD80. I used to just buy a new pair every 2 years)

  15. Hey, I think Levi's has a right to protect their tradmark if a company does outright copies of their jeans and calls them 'repros,' but when it comes to:

ANY colour tab of ANY kind of fabric stitched underneath the seam of the pocket on any of the inner or outer sides of any pocket. And ANY double arcuate type stitching (SDA and Samurai look nothing like the Levi's arcuate, IMO, other than the fact that it's two arcs) and having a leather patch with ANY (pigs, motorcycles, helicoptors etc...) thing ripping apart a pair of jeans upside down or right side up,

being persecuted by Levi's, then they can go fuck themselves. They can't accept quality homage pieces (that shits on everything they put out except LVC, and even that can be debatable) in the same market as their jeans. I don't think a person buying SDA is thinking he's trying to pass off his pair of jeans as Levis. Gimme a break.

  16. finding this place when you are a student hurts oh so badly, but it i like enjoying some quality products. which you have wear all the time, literally.

It's good and bad. Bad because it can be expensive. But mostly good, considering how long all this stuff lasts. Jeans, boots, belts, wallets, etc... asking some of the older members, do you have anything that you still use from you college/highschool days?

  17. ^^

I agree with you too. Any other pair of jeans I have simply just don't compare to the quality of my sammys either. I think it's worth it to buy 1 or 2 pairs of quality jeans for around $200 each, than to purchase many pairs of shit quality jeans for around $50 each ;)

Or buy a shit pair of for $200. Isn't that the going rate for most diesels, true religion etc...?

  18. Perhaps that 1911 was the Euro size - 0.5 to 1 size less than US shoe size.

Anyway, here a pic of my new AF64 Indys I got from Alden of Carmel. Props to Chicken for the sizing tip, but I went with a half size up to 9E, so that my toes can have a bit more room, and I can wear thicker socks.

These are going to have to tide me over until July when my Russells are due to be completed.

    af64.jpg

  19. Glue Store sells Edwin. Tsk tsk...

lol. :o I'm thinking of brands like Eternal, SC, Flathead, SDA, PBJ, Warehouse, Samurai, John Bull, etc etc etc.

Though, I did not know that... Time for me to go out west to Parra and have a look-see. Apparently only Glue stocks the Levi 538 which is giving General Pants the shits (or so I've heard).

  20. hehe, i'm just emphasising that i'm not stick-figury like dior homme models =) seems like much of the SuFu population is of the tall-thin type. mesomorph, right? well... i'm shortish and fatish. and i'm not way as ripped as your avatar, ahaha. so yes, 160lb... generally wear sz30. measured 36" at my ass, and 21.5" at my thigh.....

I'm not a fan of boot cut. Straight cut is cool, but my calves aren't that big (b/c i'm more fat than a bodybuilder) so I don't want it to be super loose down there. I'm liking the Samurai 710. How about the Skull 5010xx? I will google more for pics. Thanks =)

I'm looking at the Skull 5010 myself. hmm, I don't remember the SC40400 having a bootcut. might have to go have another look at it. You're pretty big in the seat for a size 30 waist. do you have to size up sometimes? I normally wear a 32-34, waist 34, thigh 24 (upper thigh, below crotch 25.5). I have to size up on the waist of some slim fit jeans to fit my thighs. I usually measure jeans off the thigh, because the waist will always stretch.

I wish I was that ripped. That's Jay Cutler's leg forthe curious. I tried to find a pic of Tom Platz's legs, but no luck.

  21. My Edwin Ed47s seem lighter than my RRDG. Plus they have a wider cut through the thigh and knee, so I can get the circulation going.

Definately go baggier, in my opinion this makes more difference than the actual weight of the denim.

I agree. Heavier and baggier is easier to live with than light but tight. I wear jeans or pants year round and it gets pretty hot here in aus in the summer. Just have to wash them more often.

  22. It seems that a rumor is grown up on this thread though, they've never said they will not offer their products to the outside of Japan.

Actually I thought the rumour was that companies like SC and Flathead will no longer allow their Japanese account holders to sell their products overseas to countries that already have retail stores for their products.

The reason why this doesn't concern me is because NO ONE has a shop front for Japanese jeans in Australia.
