  1. Yo I heard T's in Andersonville is the joint. Or across the street there's Man Country or that place in river north--The Baton

no but seriously, I've wondered if there was an ordinance against them. The Admiral is the only one I've even seen and it's pretty far down Lawrence. Don't know why there aren't more

  2. No Reservations

just saw Bill Cunningham's New York

    PBS Frontline episodes

Comedy concerts from Bill Hicks, Patton Oswalt, David Cross

I got a bunch of stuff in my queue been meaning to check out:

    Joan Rivers Piece of Work

    MST3Ks

    Fraggle Rock

the whole Kids in the Hall Series

    Marwencol

    Floored

    Kick Ass

    I Love You Phillip Morris

    Home Movies

You can find good stuff. But yeah, hope they get The Wire soon.

What sucks is I got one of those Roku players which can stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, and HBO Go, but you can't even pay extra for HBO Go, you HAVE to be an HBO cable subscriber. IF I HAD HBO, I WOULDN'T BE STREAMING OVER WIFI!!

  3. this is from the first page.

is this from the movie "Rebel Without a Cause"?

    no

    that would be:

he jumps out of the car before it goes over the cliff.

another movie that's similar, as in the same timeframe and actor badass-ness

he rapes his wife's sister, but no one believes her, he gets away with it.

  4. I work as a freelance/contract user experience developer for a startup/tech incubator in chicago. I'm free do do whatever I want however I want, as long as I design stuff that makes our clients happy. We're funded by a lot of government grants so the better we do, the more cashola we get.

We work a lot with healthcare clients so things get intense but the results are rewarding. If you're into ux and living in chicago maybe we can collab one day.

Arcarsenal, where do you work? DM/PM me if you don't want to post publicly. I'm a UX researcher/strategist at a place that works with tech startups in Chicago.

I come from the design world, so I'm still learning about the tech industry in the city, but I'm sure we've probably met a lot of the same people.

  5. A good way to look at it is also what part of the city you'll be in. There are some really good spots all over.

    In the loop:

Hannah's Bretzel - 3 location for great sandwiches on pretzel (bretzel) buns

Pastoral - similar to Hannah's, but think more French and less pretzel

Oasis cafe - yes, insanely good falafel and shwarma in the back of a jewelry shop

Epic Burger - griddled burgers and handcut fries in the loop

Cafecito - close by Epic, great sandwiches!

Manny's Deli - never been, but heard it's good for pastrami sandwiches

    South:

Nuevo Leon for mexican food. THE best tortillas I've ever had

Don't really know. Have heard good things from the places in Hyde Park and Calumet Fishery

    West Loop:

All the really expensive, high-end places

    North:

Hit up Intelligentsia on Broadway for coffee

Hit up Asado on Irving Park for coffee

    Nhu Lan for banh mi

    Mixteco for mexican

Piece, Big Star, Rodan, Mana, Handlebar, Maproom in Bucktown / Wicker Park

Revolution Brewing and Half Acre for beer

ñ bar on Wednesday nights for DJ+live drummer

    Further North

    Thai and Indian

the brown line will take you to some of the country's best Thai spots

    Aroy off the Damen stop

Spoon and Sticky Rice off Western

go up to Devon Ave. for Indian

I actually just had Wolfy's on Sunday & it was good

San Soo Gab San is supposed to be the shit when it comes to Korean BBQ

In Fine Spirits for great cocktails

    Argyle for Vietnamese and Pho

Tank Noodle and Ba Le are across the street from each other. both pretty good but I'm american so I don't really know what real pho is

  6. when you think of something funny while alone in public and really need to laugh. i usually just take out my phone and pretend i got a funny text

that shit happens to me all the time on the train when I'm listening to a podcast or comedy album or something and just start cracking up. I used to try to hold it in, now I don't anymore

  7. I just got back from a weekend trip to Wisconsin. I brought back as much New Glarus as I could afford without feeling too guilty. I'll post some pics later as I drink it. It sucks though because I had to pass up on some Oskar Blues that I've been wanting to try, but always next time.

  8. cold brewed coffee ain't no joke. the easy way to do it at home is:

    coarse/french press grind your coffee

use a ratio of 1 part grounds to 4 parts water

soak in glass container for 12-16 hours overnight

    strain

it is highly recommended to dilute the remaining liquid, usually a ratio of 1 part water to 1 part cold brew coffee

    get twisted

seriously, the coffee has such a smooth taste, but is very potent. great for summer.

  9. Chicago – I'm an Intelligentsia lover, but Metropolis takes a close second.

Anyways – has anybody experimented with an Aeropress? Made my first cup this morning using the standard recipe, glorious!

But I came across this tidbit that claims superior alternate means. What do you guys think? http://coffeecollective.blogspot.com/2010/01/updated-aeropress-brewing-method.html

Yeah, I've got one and have been doing the inverted method for a couple months now. It's usually my go-to brewing method on a regular basis just because it's pretty easy to do and quick clean up. On the weekends I'll do a french press, but aeropress during the week because it's quick and easy.

  10. Did anybody get Dark Lord Day Tickets? I'm so pissed. I kept refreshing right at 1pm. When the floodgates finally opened, the ticket site froze/ hung up and I didn't get any tickets. Damn

    Oh well

If anybody did get tix and wants to sell me 1 let me know. But no, I won't be paying the $160-$350 prices that they're already selling for on Stub Hub

  11. some black coffee drinkers can be condescending as fuck. so i have a sweet tooth, you wanna fight about it?

that being said, I'll drink it black if its really good coffee

no fight, we definitely agree on the last part--good coffee doesn't necessitate additions. But like I read somewhere, when people put sugar or milk in coffee, no one blinks, but if someone were to dare ask for ice cubes in their wine at dinner, it'd be GTFO.

I like my coffee like I like my women, ground up and in the freezer.

    " " " strong and bitter

    " " " lukewarm and pale

    et cetera

  12. Watch out for the Snowcrash.

If you want to learn about security, you should read Bruce Schneier. He can really explain security in layman's terms. and here's what he said about Tor a few years ago:

    http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2007/09/anonymity_and_t_1.html

    Anonymity and the Tor Network

As the name implies, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are anonymous. You don't have to sign anything, show ID or even reveal your real name. But the meetings are not private. Anyone is free to attend. And anyone is free to recognize you: by your face, by your voice, by the stories you tell. Anonymity is not the same as privacy.

If you want your Tor traffic to be private, you need to encrypt it. If you want it to be authenticated, you need to sign it as well.

  13. ajchen--nice video. I don't know why sufu is saying I need to spread rep before giving you more.

anyway, also checked out the others in the Singularities series. really like them. I especially love the Invisible NYC when the guy talks about the artists coming into his studio just to fan themselves with their portfolios. awesome

  14. It's just having trouble finding the movie after I email it. I wish there was a way just to simply package them together. I may just do it on my roommates computer and put it on a flash drive.

thanks though mag. im going to look through that site as it seems to be full of people that are quite serious about powerpoint.

The way I understand it, PPT doesn't embed the movie, it just links to the file and then plays it. If there's a way to embed the movie, you could try searching the help menu for that.

I'm assuming you've made sure that the video and the PPT are both in the same folder (like packaging). If not, try that.

And are you sure the movie is in the right format? I've had issues with pcs playing QT movies, etc. Make sure you use a format like WMV, AVI, or MP4.

Don't know. I'm probably not much help. If possible, and you have Acrobat Pro, you can export to PDF and then embed the movies in there. I know that will work.

  15. any chicago beer heads know good spots to get Founder's KBS? Been asking around in prep. for March 15th and it seems it will be difficult and limited (one bottle per cust. etc.)

You could check West Lakeview Liquors and see if they'll reserve any for you. Good luck.
