  1. Oooo someone here saw Paprika already? How was it? I think it releases in NYC this month. If you enjoyed it I highly recommend stuff by the same director like Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers.

I'm going to recommend a 13 ep series called "Kemonodzume." It came out last year and flew under almost everyone's radar because the animation style and storytelling was so unorthodox. Coming from a huge anime geek this is one of the top 10 series of the last decade in terms of storytelling, innovation, and ambition. You can find a batch torrent of all the eps at http://bt.shinsen-subs.org/%5BShinsen-Subs%5D%20Kemonodzume.torrent.

It's a pretty big download but if you have a client like uTorrent you can choose to download just the first couple of episodes and see if it suits your taste.

  2. I think Sushi Yasuda has great quality sushi. I didn't find it as overbearing as people say but then again I didn't get the omakase at the counter. You can order a la carte if you want.

I've never had a bad time at Nubo 57, and imho it is one of the most enjoyable places to have a meal, but nobody really goes there for the sushi.

  3. Asian chicks are going to be played out soon. I know because all the white guys in finance already got their hands on one. Gonna be like pinstripe suits, pink shirts, and bootcuts.

  4. To all the people from Singapore, is it really easy to find decent and casual European/international cooking? You guys make it seem as if there are good joints all over the place but from my experiences in other asian countries this rarely the case. Even in very international cities it is hard to get authentic foreign cooking unless you're at a pretty ritzy place.

  5. so you hate number nine (and etc).

    you hate your(and everyone's) grandparents.

you hate male and female italian-americans living in the ny/nj area.

you hate yakuza, triads, and basically all korean men.

you hate slanty-eyed, black-haired rice eaters including dizon and osawa.

    thanks alot.

Damn it's like liner notes on what I hate!

I'm pretty sure that's not the core of NN's design but if they do have pieces like that then I guess I'm not a fan of those.

Are everyone's grandparents nostalgic about things they've never experienced? I know my grandparents didn't do that. Although they were Chinese peasants and suffered through the cultural revolution so I guess there's not much to be nostalgic about.

I'm talking about the Gotti types and you know it.

Triads and yakuza ARE hard. They will fuck my shit up and I respect/fear that. 99% of Koreans though....lol.

    Goddamn Asians.

  6. People who need to blast their loudass hiphop ringtones in public.

    Curse words on clothing.

People who are nostalgic for time periods they've never lived in.

    Guido guys.

    Guido chicks.

    Asians who act hard.

    Asians in general.

  7. Hot damn. Hot. Damn. First priority when getting back to San Francisco--get me some of that xiao long bao action. With some of that vinegar lovin' also I might add.

Aren't there quite a few places that do this dish well in NYC though? Is the SF version much better?

  8. Fuck, most everything was made better- electronic equipment, a lot of clothing and shoes, homes. Everthing is now disposable, or unrepairable. Tv breaks? Fuck, buy a new one, it's not made to be fixed. Fuel pump out? Wanna rebuild it? tough shit, ain't gonna happen.

Rock and roll used to be made better, at least on a larger scale.

This is bullshit. Electronic equipment is now more functional, efficient, portable, and cheaper. People from decades ago would cream thier pants to have access to current household products. All the classic "quality" electronics that people are nostalgic about now were expensive, top of the line items which can't compete with today's counterparts of the same caliber.

Clothing and shoes were better made and more durable...well I can't argue with that. Except they were made to last because people weren't expected to have more than a couple of outfits. No synthetic fibers, no lightweight or weatherproof materials....enjoy wearing the same wool coat for two decades.

Why do you want to fix your tv so badly? People fixed thier TVs because buying new replacements wasn't economically feasible. Do you really want to take your 15 inch black and white to an appliance shop, then wait 5 days before they can get it back to you? I prefer the modern world of instant exchanges/warrenties and the option of upgrading frequently without breaking the bank because mass production has made it affordable.

I personally miss solid, old quality furniture. I hate the painted over recycled wood pulp crap that is pretty much the basis of all mass produced furniture nowadays.

  9. I don't understand the people who hate on movies like 300, Matrix, or LoTR. None of these things are meant to be high art or any kind of barometer for intellectualism. They're popular because they executed their core concepts well, and were for the most part, a pleasant surprise for audiences. Can you name 5 sci-fi movies more ambitious or better executed than the first Matrix? Can you do the same for LoTR with fantansy movies?

Half the movies listed in here are *niche* films which were produced from singular source material or represents the style of a kooky director. Saying Old Boy is overrated makes no sense since that film was practically never on the cultural radar. The only way you hear about something like that is from the minority whom it did appeal to, whereas 90% of the population would be offended/never watch it in the first place. You hate it? Welcome to the majority. The movie is still not overrated.

Honestly, the only movie that I did not enjoy upon first viewing, which then became popular to the point of bothering me, was Napoleon Dynamite. All the other stuff, like Garden State, Little Miss Sunshine, etc....had their own charm and I was happy to see them succeed in a field against movies like Big Mama's House and latter day Ben Stiller projects.

Edit: I also hate hate hate Scarface, but mostly because people treat Al Pacino's character like some latter day badass Jesus figure instead of an extremely sad and flawed man who met a miserable end that was entirely his own fault. I'm exasperated by the film's fans/misguided influence, and not the film itself, which is a distinction that I think a lot of you guys are not making.

  10. its restaurant week options are gonna be difficult any alternatives or plan b's? maybe some japanese on St Marks, Typhoon? Men Kui Tei? Just throwing ideas out there

Any of the ikeyazas (sp) around St. Marks would probably be excellent for a meetup as well. Cheap, lots of variety, and good local (eh....japanese) color.

  11. Does artisinal still have their "jacket" policy

Last time I walked during dinner time most diners were not in jackets. I doubt any place really enforces this kind of rule nowadays.

I'd be down for dinner since I'm lurking around the city a lot.

  12. asians will take something and master it to death

look at what we're good at

    competitive eating

    breakdancing

    djing

    graffiti

    pizza making

    french cuisine

    pastry chefs

    sous chefs

    reggae dancing

    graphic design

    golfing

    double dutch

    texas hold em poker

    collecting sneakers

taking over poorer south east asian countries

    cheerleading

    real estate

I'm not sure we're actually that good at half of these things.

  13. Really nice coat man...how much was it?...what size did you buy and what are your measurements? Thanks :)

I checked out that coat today at the Rugby store on University. Fit and look is nice but it was too thin to be a real peacoat. Also there is a preppy patch detail on the upper right arm that turned me off. I only saw an XL and it was marked $179.

Also, the Rubgy store is pushing the "preppy rebel" thing a little too hard. How many people really want to wear golf club attair but with a skull and crossbones on them? Otherwise some of the basics looked pretty decent plus there was a ridiculously cute girl at the register.

  14. uniqlo in menlo park mall in nj has 30% off everything. they have all the basics and sweaters that nyc store has.

Sweet, grabbing some thermals and maybe some sweaters.

I feel kind of bad for that store. Very little foot traffic while all the greased up NJ college kids can't stop piling into the Express and Banana Republic in the same mall.

  15. The NJ stores stock the current season but they have a lot less stuff. They have all the basics like plain tees, fleece, hoodies, jeans and some of the outer wear like the peacoat and the duffle. It's mostly the everyday/work items. I did't see the cashmere sweaters, flannel, puffer/trench coats, or really any of the more street/fashiony stuff. What makes me angry is that they also do not have any of the graphic artist t-shirts.

For non-basic items the selection is pretty crappy.

  16. i need to go there and i need to go there right now.

and by right now, i mean tomorrow or thursday.

but wait, upstairs? most of the menswear at century

21 is on the ground floor... are you positive, england?

This seems weird to me too. If I remember correctly the 2nd floor men's stuff is mostly heavier coats/suits/sport jackets.

  17. Did anybody see the astroboy t-shirt? I can't remember when i went last week, thanks.

Is this the pink one? I just saw it earlier today. Would have gotten one but no smalls left. Are the t-shirt runs limited? They were out of sizes in some shirts plus there were some in the Uniqlo Paper mag that I didn't see on the shelves.

Man this store really does make the Jersey ones look like utter crap. Selection is really not even close, particularly for outerwear. I grabbed the last small reversible down vest in olive/brown and a shirt. Good stuff.

  18. take a look at the look book on uniqlo's american website, there's some really great looking stuff on there.

Whoa there's a ton of stuff on there that the NJ stores don't have. I was in there and saw a pic of a great looking duffle coat. Unfortunately the store didn't stock it.

And props to Unqlo for being like the only damn clothing retail company to have an actual well designed and browsable website. Every single other place either shows nothing or is annoyingly flash based and pumps eurotrash club music.
