  1. If you don't mind buying 3rd party products, Nissin Di622 is something worth looking at. Pretty similar to SB-600 minus the Creative Lighting(?), I believe that's what it's called.

  2. what about some technical shells? any suggestions?

If you're looking for a old school aesthetic, White Mountaineering do up some good ones as well as The North Face Purple Label... but of course hard to get outside of Japan.

Arc'teryx seem to have something cooked up for this Fall with a new collection that is less technical looking.

  3. checked out north face purple label in the flesh today, really nice infact north face jp in general is pretty fucking epic,

anyone know where i can see white mountainering in tokyo?

Sounds Good in Harajuku has it. (http://www.sounds-good.jp/).

    As does Tokishirazu (http://www.tokishirazu.jp/)

I've heard of both before but have only ever been the Sounds Good Hara store which I think should be relatively easier to find. But still a random stumble on my part haha.

  4. the best p&s (canon g10, panasonic lx3, ricoh grd, etc.) can have image quality as good as any dslr. just shoot at the lowest iso setting and in raw format. there will still be less dynamic range, and it is more important to get perfect exposure, but it's not too noticeable in most circumstances.

But if you're in any situation that is less than ideal your effed.

None of the compacts on the market aside from the Sigma DP2 can tolerate ISO at 400. Even the grain creeps up a lot at 400.

  5. visvim and vintage-styled don't really mix in my opinion... don't know about shipping to asia, but i know both hyr and archival clothing have had blogs during the past couple months that have talked about this issue. check their recent archives

I think there's definitely some overlap and they work fine together. The K-Pack for me comes across as a very classical design.

But yeh, Cordura in the form they use on their bags isn't water-proof.

  6. so .....

Supply in Sydney is the cheapest in the world apart from Japan!

    AUD$1699 RRP = EU860 = USD$1095

how much are they in HK FIL ?

oh yeah don't bother converting to Yen the AUD has totally tanked against it. Worth 60 and year ago was worth 100 :o(

Qubic in New Zealand should get Visvim next season I think, which should have cheap(er) prices as well.

I pulled the trigger on the DJ Mountain Lights... Thanks to Becks for the sizing advice. For anyone who wants to know, they're made on the same lasts as the US Danner Mountain Lights, so the sizing is the same. I'm right in between sizes so had to size up. Maybe an insole will make it a little more snug.

Can someone recommend me a good suede waterproofing pray?

    Granger's does a Waterproof Nubuck/Suede protector for Gore-Tex called Granger G-Max

http://www.grangers.co.uk/productview.cfm?id=12 (this seems to be the new version)

This is the older version, same company, not sure if it is any different but it claims to do the same as the Granger's G-Max stuff. However DO NOT BUY THE G-WAX ONE. Not suitable for Gore-Tex I hear.

  8. I'm actually planning to get a Sigma 30mm this weekend sometime as well.

You just have to be weary of getting a shitty copy... try it out if possible, shoot wide-open and then pixel-peep. But if you get a good lens then it's well worth it.

  9. Sorry for being such a newbie, but can you explain me that about shooting with a 50mm lens? I thought you get a good bokeh from a lens that has a low aperture, like 1.7 or lower? Not the lens width (that's what it's called?)?

    Check out this article...

    http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/technical/bokeh.html

But in layman terms... telephoto (longer focal length) + larger aperature = more background blur.

50 mm focal length on a crop body = 80 mm

  10. I messed around with a friend's D-LUX 4 and didn't really like the controls. I still think Canon's back wheel is unbeatable. I can't remember if there is a trigger control as well but basically (on a p&s level), Ricoh's front trigger + Canon's back-wheel are dope.

Sorry to go off on a bit of a tangent, just the controls bugged me while the rest of it was quite good.

  11. joelz: Seriously, if you want to take bokeh shots, buy a goddamn lens that can render good bokeh. Those shots sure are colorful, but the light disks are shit

    I thought they were alright?

The shape of the lights are nice and circular and not all jagged and angular like with a cheap 50 mm.

  12. why? i can't see what's the bottom material, but they look nice from here.(the white one and the blue one)

Aside from all black, all white, I just find the color a little much. I would have preferred to see color integrated along the lines of some of the packs from last year (i think)... black w/ blue, olive w/ orange etc.

  13. damn it ddml. i've been playing on that thing since you posted that. and i do not have 600 dollars to spend for the 3 times i go hiking a year. fuck.

i can't decide what leather to get...

    danner2.jpg

The 2nd and 3rd are very similar to previous FW08 Danner Japan releases whereas I haven't seen the 1st one recently.

You could save yourself some solid cash by just getting the FW08 ones unless you're over a true US 10.5?
