  1. well i'm not saying all white hispanics are self hating, but i think carrying the air of 'i'm superior, i'll be able to run for office, and my poor little darkie cousin can't' is somewhat self hating and speaks more to how you view yourself within a larger idea

I'm sure he was joking

  2. I'm a white Hispanic, and I'm definitely not self-hating, and I usually put Hispanic if I have to put my race somewhere since I figure those affirmative action points might come into play somehow.

  3. I'm still on the hunt for some of the CDG x Fred Perry polos, in the meantime, where can you pick up the, and I'm quoting here, "Made in England" slim fit FP polos? I only wear black and white at the moment as I've mentioned, and I know they make them in that color, but it's hard finding such specific items. Black and white, slim fit, made in england, etc...

    Headache.

I picked up mine at Rolo in San Francisco. They can't be too hard to find ... just look around and make sure you look at the garment tag before buying.

BTW, I'm fairly certain all the made in England ones are slim-fit. Mine certainly are.

  4. as a born and raised canadian, im really not following what you folks mean by the apparently unmissable 'latent racism' present in my country, care to expand?
It's kind of hard to explain. I guess "racism" isn't always the best word to describe it; "ignorance" would be better, in most cases. I'm just astonished by how many people, especially older people, are completely ignorant of other cultures and have no interest in educating themselves. Sometimes that ignorance becomes racism when it turns into resentment and fear. Again, young people aren't like this for the most part, and if they are, it's simple ignorance and not fear/resentment. It's really just the older generation, but it's shockingly common.
There should be a canadian thread but why do most canadians hate americans? and this isn't even a generalization of personal encounters of canadians, I know this for a 100% fact that 80% of canadians hate Americans.
This is unequivocably true and truly hilarious. The answer is very long and complicated, but mostly what it comes down to is a combination of a massive inferiority complex and a national culture that celebrates victimhood and passive behavior and defines itself by what it is not (no Canadian knows what "being Canadian" means, but they can for sure tell you that it means "not being American").
  5. i borrowed their first record from the library

    but i didn't like it

    :(

i have trouble listening to young white dude musics

Please listen to Grails - Black Tar Prophecies.

normally I hate AMG but this is a good review:

As a band, Grails have embraced something far more experimental about themselves. Sonically, the disc is clean — even when the plentiful fuzzed-out and distorted electric guitar is present. But Black Tar Prophecies is more speculative and more solid. There is a focus on ideas and execution rather than on repetition. Some things sound like they were recorded live in the studio; others sound like the sonic effects were added on not as an afterthought but as part of the process. The spirit of the great '60s and '70s experimenters is in here (from Can and Faust to Jean-Claude Vannier, early Eloy, and Flower Travelling Band), but Grails sound like themselves. Rock, jazz, free-form freakouts, droning soundscapes, plodding dubbed-up and out bass — they are all here, making for one of the most adventurous records to come out in 2006 and perhaps, when all is said and done, one of the very best.
  6. there is actually an ideological stance that is gaining a lot of credit here that proposes that 'whites' need to abandon the massive groupthink of whiteness and re-engage with their ethnic origins, in an effort to debunk white privelige and the establishment of 'whiteness' as a standard for 'americanness'.
This is BS. Have you ever been to Canada?

Multiculturalism -- celebrating difference -- doesn't work. I've encountered racism in the US, but it's been isolated incidents and wasn't too common. Here in Canada it's pretty shocking -- it's a lot more omnipresent, and a lot more latent (which I find to be much more harmful than overt racism, to be honest). Here in Canada, minorities are encouraged to maintain their traditions, language, and culture, and all it does is result in a shitload of segregation and a shitload of alienation, not to mention confusion and fear amongst the majorities.

Yes, there is racism in America. It will probably never go away. Still, I'm convinced that the "melting pot" (which, I believe, is what you're criticizing, in effect) is one of the main reasons that the US has managed to achieve and maintain economic and cultural hegemony for so long.

Nevertheless, I do understand what you're saying. I was "raised" as a "white American" and I have found that in recent years, I have become gradually more interested in my heritage, especially my Colombian heritage. Nevertheless, I think this sort of endeavor should be a personal, private thing, and not a governmentally-and/or-societally-encouraged thing, as it is in Canada.

  7. actually, I was thinking of checking out Promethea (which I hear is very meta-textual)... maybe I'll check out Tom Strong while I'm at it.

I was not a huge fan of Promethea... not really sure why. I think Tom Strong is a lot better. (Plus, the Tom Strong spin-offs/side stories are pretty cool....)
