  1. somehow though the measurements are the same iirc if you look at measurement charts, they fit differently. hawaii fits a bit looser on the top block and tapers a bit to the bottom (very slightly). okinawa fits a bit tighter and goes straight all the way down. this could be the effect of natural variations on the pairs i tried, but the hawaii fits a bit more flattering on me (no bum, skinny asian legs).

So, I know this has been debated before, but where do people figure the 47s fit on this spectrum?

I love my okis, but they're a size 36 and fit best straight out of a hot wash. I'd almost be tempted to size down to 34 in raw hawaii's and really shrink to fit, but I'd rather grab 47s to have a less conspicuous pair, and sizing down seems unrealistic on those (in the waist).

  2. hey tcb 60 and 50 owners, yeah you too volvo!!!

i just got my pair of 60's, a post wash version size 36.  i tried them on.  they kind of feel tight around the crotch area and the jeans goes right up my butt.  not a bad thing but i am not used to this feeling.  i did not get this with my 50's jeans.  is this because the 60 is a very different cut?  it must be the rise as well.  i guess also the 60's jeans material will loosen up after some wearing.  i also found that it was tight around the bum area if you know what i mean?  it must be the different cut between the 50's cut and the 60's cut.  i totally get what volvo meant when he said that the 60's jeans will go well in a more formal setting rather than the 50's cut.

hd, how did the back rise measure on your size 36? Tuckshop (the only place I could find that info) lists a discouraging 14.7" back rise.

  3. In the 6-7 months I've worn my Okis (in rotation 3-5 days a week), I've found that the fabric undergoes all sorts of subtle and interesting evolutions even though it's not quite fading in the typical ways we're anticipating. The texture changes depth, for instance, both visually and in terms of hand/feel. Mine are now almost fully out of the dark purplish indigo phase they had at the start and entering something almost blueberry-like. All this is too say there's plenty to keep your attention even in the absence of profound fades. They're simply excellent.

  4. Just felt like registering similar buyer's remorse on the 3sixteen tees: I bought a pair of the first lot of indigo pocket tees (in XL) and they never fit well or really matched the size charts. I've kept one unworn after an initial wash, even with the advertised shrinkage it doesn't correspond to the specs very well at all. With shrinkage, the chest and shoulders measure a full inch over the size chart, while the length shrank the 2" as indicated. So, I've got a shirt with a 22.5" chest and only 27" length (i.e., very boxy). I find them especially uncomfortable in the armpits, where way too many seams and fabric converge:

  5. My DWC pair (Railcar x021s) should get more attention these days, but they unexpectedly (and perhaps permanently) shrank in the thigh/top block on their 9th or 10th wash last month. So, they're only getting 3-4 days a week in rotation with my raw SC Okis (about 5 months of casual wear to date, 4 hot soaks/2 washes) and my Leftfield Black Maria Greasers (2.5 years tons of washes). I'm moving/traveling over the summer, so these are the only jeans I've selected to wear for the next few months, but I've got TCB 60s in mind once we get to September. Cheers  :)

  6. I'll save volvo the trouble, since I just went over this with him 5 pages back. By all accounts the measurements are accurate and everybody should know to go tts with tcb.  :)

the tcb online shop has good measurements.

they're all in japanese but it's pretty easy to understand

    1st measure waist

    2nd measure inseam length

    3rd measure front rise

    4th measure thigh

    5th measure hem width

it mentions the 60's in a 36 has a 12.75 inches thigh, so I guess either my multiple crotch repairs or an accidental 90 degree C wash overshrank my pair to 12.5.

  7. I tried a pair of these on the other weekend for me a size 34 (buying 32-33 at the moment) and even at that I was struggling with the thighs. I think the only thing loose about these is the hem.

    Interesting.

A size 36 is the only size that would work for me because of the thighs and front rise. Since I've been more active after a unusually lazy winter, I'm waiting for another month or so before deciding on any new purchases. That said, I've discovered that the taper between the thigh and the knee matters for me more than the thigh measurements itself. For example, a 13" thigh that tapers to a 9" knee is often slimmer than I really want. While a 12.75 or even 12.5 thigh with a 9.5-10 inch knee is quite comfortable. Hence, a couple Warehouse and Fullcount models are on my radar too. I'd get a pair of SC 47s to go with my Okis or just go for TCB 50s, but I want a little less room in the hips/rear end.

  8. "The fit is slighty larger and more relaxed compared to the typical 66 cut as marketed by other brands."--that's exactly what I wanted to here. Thanks, volvo.

  9. here's a question for you, volvo (unofficial tcb brand ambassador to the west): what's the knee measurement on a pair of size 36 60s and how much do you think this denim stretches or shrinks in the usual areas (waist, thighs, knees)?

    the tcb itch is growing...

  10. Got my cuff tears darned by Steven @ Railcar (which unfortunately took 5 weeks "round trip"). Just a week and a half later the crotch started to go, and then my patch job saved me from real embarrassment when two spots tore open that I didn't patch thoroughly enough.

  11. There's a pretty good looking pair of 220s in the "well aged" section of the 3sixteen website: http://www.3sixteen.com/blogs/news/15707784-well-aged-sl-220x

On a semi-related note, can anybody speak to the texture of the Black Ise short sleeve workshirt? Is it fuzzy or hairy or slubby at all, or is that just an optical illusion produced by the pattern? I've got the same shirt with the indigo star fabric from last year (which is totally flat and uniform) and I'm thinking about adding this one to my warm weather lineup.
