Word of Mouth - The Crust & Fades Contest
Jared_Lee replied to beautiful_FrEaK's topic in superdenim
I've said before that if I had my OA01's to do over again, I would get a 35. Looking at the shrink b_F reported compared with my Leroy's, I think I'm going to have to go 36 in the 5150 (my actual waist measures 32). Inseam is TBD. Pattern shape (where front rise meets back rise in the crotch) and where the pants want to settle on the hips can make inseams variable by as much as an inch to achieve the same length at the ankle. I just can't do the wash and shrink, spend a week in tight jeans, get them all stretched out where I like them after two weeks and then be starting down that whole process again in a few weeks time anymore. I like em a little loose and comfy right out of the dryer. If anything, I'll need to have my tailor nip the waist in if the shrink doesn't go according to the calculated 8ish percent from raw to washed. All that said, anyone in the market for a virtually unworn pair of OA01's in a 33? It's not like we're all already here buying another pair of jeans we don't need. -

@frank, yes, I am planning on the 5150. Sizing up to 36 to get the desired dimensions in rise, thigh and leg opening. They might end up an inch too big in the waist, but I'll either belt it or have the waist taken in. The 36 looks like it should shrink down pretty close to my Leroys which is the ideal if we're going for repro dimensions. The 0105 fit isn't in sight for these cuts even with oversizing the waist. -

Congratulations, b_F! And thank you @MJF9 for looking after the other children while papa's away. -

Unpopular opinion - I don't like most WWII details. Pockets bags are usually too heavy. Rear pockets are often too small. Wonky stitching doesn't matter to me. Unfinished fly is unappealing. I prefer coin pocket rivets. I do love the laurel wreath buttons though! -

Those Boncouras look awful, imo. But if the wearer is happy with them, I love it! Anyway, based on Ooe shrink experience and what b_F reported for shrink on his 411, I think I'm eyeing a 36 in the 5150. 😬 -
That sounds ideal, @beautiful_FrEaK. I don't tend to wear my tighter woven, stiffer fabrics nearly as much. As much as I love White Oak's history and how their denim fades, the tighter and smoother weave just isn't as appealing to me. Those are common characteristics of the Kaihara denim I've worn as well and looking at the fade pictures, it looks to be a relatively flat denim.

I have never been particularly excited by what I've seen, worn and handled from Kaihara. My all time favorite fabric is from Shinya (thanks @Maynard Friedman and PaulT). Makes that an easy choice for me.

Now that we're narrowing in on what the denim would be, I would say that a 13-14oz red caste from Collect would be perfect. -

I am interested. Though with my work dress code, I couldn't be a serious contender. Keep us updated on what WoM is willing to do on its end. A standard 5150 would work just fine for me. Collect is my favorite Japanese mill (not sure who makes FC's 13.75oz fabric). -
I am always jealous of folks that can get 18 months and many washes without major repairs. By the time my jeans start getting toward that super soft, bright two year mark, they're so fragile that I can't wear them more than a few weeks without needing more repair. I love the look of all of these jeans, but I always prefer that bright, powder blue most.
-
@gmn, I have not experienced significant shrink on their 13.75oz one-wash inseams. Less than a half inch, if anything. I machine wash and tumble dry. On the 11.5oz, the inseam shrank another .75" or so. I don't have a measurement, but they went from a three roll for length to a two roll after wash and tumble.

Is that the XSR700 or 900? I rented the 900 for a week once. Stupid fast bike, like dumb that people even want to ride bikes like that on public roads. I'd really like to try the 700 some time. Going to give the engine a try next month on the Tenere 700.

@super-thermite, I mean the vertical lines that don't follow a fold but have washed out lighter than the rest of the leg due to some kind of crinkling in the wash or detergent settling into wrinkles. It happened pretty heavily on my last Warehouse pair. I didn't really care much for that denim all around and particularly disliked the heavyweight pocket bag material.

Thanks, @shredwin_206!

@Sympathy-For-The-Denim, they are the standard 13.75 oz. I usually wash right side out after the first two or three washes. There's no deeply thought out formula to how I wash. I wash when I think they need it. I use the machines and detergents available to me at the moment (sometimes travelling). And honestly, it doesn't make any difference. I have some pairs that end up with rivers. I have some that end up with deep creases. I have some that don't. It's antithetical to the garment to treat it any differently than underwear or a tee shirt when it comes to how you wash it. I just wear and wash and let what happens happen.

Yeah, I think the thing with styling a vest like that is to not work it into a "heritage" or "workwear" style. I think it would look great with an oversized military fatigue or cargo paired with sneakers. Paired with denim and/or boots, it will certainly look too folksy for my taste. I would also love to see it with something like the Good Ol' What's-Her-Face Freedom Flight Trouser or some sort of linen trouser and then a lug-soled moc from your choice of brand or a loafer. It's really just a matter of styling it outside of its origins and it will look super cool.

@AlientoyWorkmachine thank you. I couldn't really say what the wash schedule has been. I can't wear them at work (for the past 12 months anyway) and I have worn some Roy's, Warehouse, Mister Freedom and other chinos all throughout as well. I just wash them when I feel like it's time. I couldn't really even guess as to how many washes beyond saying more than 6 and less than 15. I only have access to a laundromat so I wash and tumble these on "Colors" and "Low" whatever that means on those machines.

Mine should deliver to me next week along with the 11.5 oz Type I. I'll try to post once I have them, though I guess you have already seen that fit...
-
Two sizes up will fit great with some stretch. If I was going to get another pair, I would go up three sizes because I prefer my jeans a little loose. I have a 33 and it's a "perfect" fit meaning I can break it in and wear it without a belt after stretch. I prefer the feeling of a waist and thigh that don't require stretch and just fit comfy right out of the wash. I also prefer an 8.75" LO minimum. For that I would go up three sizes to a 34 rather than the 33 I own.

The jacket is killer. I would be reluctant to buy that pant without trying it on first. It could be great. It could be one of those styles that even in the right size, it still doesn't fit. I think I could find the fit with the luxury of playing with a few sizes, but I don't have that luxury.
