  2. It’s a shame it’s a crappy old iphone photo.. I’ve never had a smart phone till recently (I still don’t really need one) our house is in a network coverage black hole, it’s rarely charged.. I took that one photo and the battery died so I missed some great early morning wintery photos on my walk to work.. there was a bunch of cross country skiers, skiing through Bingham park this morning :)

  3. How much did you pay for it @chicote ?

I've been a bit out of touch with the prices recently.. there was a time, maybe 5 or 6yrs ago when you could still get a nos m-series jacket for ¥12k or there abouts.. such a lot of jacket for that money.. alas most of them were size 38.. i always fancied the blouse. still do!

  4. Nope.. it's a new one for me.. i'll check it out though.

I was riding to work this morning heading downhill in the bleak snowy darkness.. freezing shards of icy snow felt like needles hitting me in the eyes.. i kept having to close each one alternatley for a few seconds to take the pain away.. the roads just a blur through the tears.. all the while singing this... Thank you Adam Curtis :D

  5. There's a lot of good tunes on it.. I was typing lyrics last night trying to find out what this was..

My old scissors, which i've had for decades were Richards.. the new ones are from a small kinfe maker in Sheffield called J.Adams

    https://www.sheffieldknives.co.uk/acatalog/Scissors.html

I just knocked on the door of their workshop and asked if i could buy a couple of pairs

    fullsizeoutput_3617.jpeg.ea8b33535224554f315c873709b3c852.jpeg

The large set were £22 the small set were £18

    Edit- Taylors not Richards

  6. When it's finished it'll look like this

    fullsizeoutput_395c.thumb.jpeg.262c2039cbfa64224a7d6655ffc780d9.jpeg

..to the right of the photo is the other half of the mould giving you a cavity to cast ceramic into.. the folks who manufacture them, build their parts onto the base and pour ceramic into the hole in the top of the mould, wait for it to set..split the mould and remove the nozzle

    Mononozzle-IMG_3390-12.jpg.bd9cb4cffd5523a56e98e93a4b55850c.jpg

..it's a combination of tundish nozzle and sliding-gate-type stationary plate as one item.. basically molten steel is poured through the ceramic and argon fed in for steel treatment.

  7. Less picturesque for me.. no wood carving today.. instead, i've been making a GRP mould, it starts with me making some wooden formers in halves.. then i set them up in an external frame and coat them with mould release solution.. when this has dried i coat them with an abrasion resistant gel-coat (this blue stuff) to make a very light but hard wearing mould.

    fullsizeoutput_3955.thumb.jpeg.b0d47f3efbc0075bec470fef013a03d6.jpeg

    fullsizeoutput_3956.thumb.jpeg.5d90813289e54a9e927dc27e0adb3529.jpeg

.. while the gel-coat is drying i cut numerous pieces of fibreglass ribbon and fibreglass matting with my swanky new scissors..

    fullsizeoutput_3959.thumb.jpeg.aab51391d8b0c3d811bceab3f9e712c7.jpeg

..some folks who laminate fibreglass, cut the matting into small squares and build it like a patchwork quilt.. those folks are fkin idiots! you're better off accurately cutting each piece to fit in it's alloted place.

When the gel is just slightly tacky.. it needs coating with a coupling-coat (this grey stuff) which keys the shiny gel into the shiny laminate and stops the whole thing from delaminating itself..

    fullsizeoutput_3957.thumb.jpeg.e171882e4c696bd2375af2663fc9e2ca.jpeg

.. while the coupling-coat becomes tacky i mix some resin with some hardener and an accelerator (piperzine) which i stipple onto the fibreglass ribbon.. I then individually apply each piece of ribbon to the tacky coupling coat with the end of a paintbrush.. this takes ages so i'll listen to a few podcasts... Today, the story of Kerry Wendell Thornley, co-founder of Discordianism, aka Omar Khayyam.. def recommended

    fullsizeoutput_3958.thumb.jpeg.aa2c055a29bf1bef103aa523e02075af.jpeg

i might even hoover the laptop one day...

Applying sticky resin infused ribbon to sticky coupling coat with the end of a paintbrush isn't as easy as it sounds but i've done this before so it's as neat as fk without a single air bubble..

    fullsizeoutput_3952.thumb.jpeg.f0e1292c8ad7b7602485a32555f1ff50.jpeg

I then use the paintbrush to stipple more resin onto the matting.. I do this in order like a clock..

    fullsizeoutput_3953.thumb.jpeg.44495681246d773214be08365f181014.jpeg

i leave it for a while to soak in which makes the matting more pliable and gives me a time out..for a Time Out :)

    fullsizeoutput_395a.thumb.jpeg.7e8eeca163eed3c6574405e98017d4da.jpeg

.. then i start from the beginning of the clock and apply each piece to it's designated place.. then drop an internal plywood frame onto the matting.. again, i've done this before so there isn't even a wayward resinous fingerprint..

    fullsizeoutput_395b.thumb.jpeg.95135de3f5e2dbdef6105cee02c2f2d8.jpeg

...I'll leave it till after the weekend to fully cure before splitting the mould and removing the formers.. but in honour of Blue Peter and Janet Ellis (who taught me everything i know) here's one i made earlier.. albeit, this was a double cavity

    fullsizeoutput_2f16.thumb.jpeg.79cc2cae797807328723b7812bafc613.jpeg

.. i pop those^ plywood half rings out and insert metal wear rings which i make.. then cover the top of the mould with hard wearing Tufnol/Paxolin.. this is just one half, located to the other half with metal (male/female) dowels which i build into the construction..

    fullsizeoutput_3954.thumb.jpeg.a9b86e7d3ff021ed633745b56b243f3d.jpeg

.. and that was my day at work.., Oh.. and on the way home i saw 4 folks getting out of a van who had a very strong jumper game going on!! then i bought a few cans of Vocation which was on offer from Tesco... :)

  8. Yup.. the old MP- button backs (pre-91) were stamped with an S .. or at least the ones I’ve seen were.. MP-597, MP-603 ect.. the S button back carried on after the end of MP production into production of the 91-97 M-series of denim.. M41001, M41030 ect .. when the 1998 series started the 1st still had the S button backs, SC obviously still had stock so you often see the earliest versions of the 1st with an ‘S’ then the rest as far as I knew had 98 until your M41326 turned up..

I think it’s a reasonable assumption.. although I’ve never seen a 99 and I’d assume we would see more 00 if production of the 98 series continued for a few more years after the millennium until they were discontinued in favour of the SC47s.. 66s ect..

  9. I still remember the exact moment of getting this album home from Warp.. i think i'd heard mention of A Tribe Called Quest on a Jungle Brothers track but back in 1990 i knew nothing of their music.. i put the needle on the record and for the first 40 seconds I thought.. Oh No!.. what the flip have i bought here?.. then the bass kicks and faith was restored. B)

  10. Can you remember the bridge size Doc? B&L used to offer Wayfarers in both 22 and 24mm bridge to fit more noses.. i think it was stamped on the frame.. maybe yours were the 24s?

I have the same issue.. my dad's side of the family all had an olive complexion.. sadly i didn't inherit this family trait but i did inherit the slight oily skin which doesn't help with the frame slippage.. maybe we need those 1940s era wire frame spectacles which curl around the ear?

The best fitting glasses i've had are RB Clubmaster.. the offerings from Luxottica are a bit light and flimsy but the adjustable wire nose cushions stop the continuous frame slippage, plus my nose isn't perfectly symetrical, i can adjust one side more than the other so the fit straight on my face..  i've got 2 pairs (one blk, one tort) but the prescription lenses are 5 or 6 yrs old and i need more magnification nowadays.. I think my next pair of work glasses will be a NOS pair of B&L Clubmaster and i'll get my prescription lenses put in.. hopefully the Westfield will pay for it... the acetate pair i'm currently wearing for work continuiously slip when i'm looking down at my bench (it's so fkin annoying) and if i'm doing something with resin, glue, paint ect.. i have to continuously shove them back up with the heel of my hand so it doesn't transfer to the lenses.

I think the way fwd for me is having a decent pair of sunglasses (Caribbean) for lounging around and a lighter/tighter pair (just cheap shit) for riding, playing tennis, and such... better this way than looking like an elasticated, mirrored Oakley twat with a band around the back of my head.. :D

X-post of my sunglasses from the early 90s

    ..and mid 90s

    image.png.ebdaa46e17feb384bc4c8252ae517f40.png

    ..both vintage nowadays

  11. I was reading recently... that^ little bit of metal on Bausch & Lomb Wayfarers which is an integral part of the hinge..

    image.thumb.png.f5c8a22a004bd8cca9395ca4c05c71c5.png

Luxottica's RB Wayfarers still have it

    image.thumb.png.a9f9843e5424989d4bc66f432264011a.png

.. but nowadays it's just a piece of metel glued onto the frame as decoration :D

  12. Doing some thread archaeology...

I've finally managed to track down a replacement for my lost RB Caribbean..
These are c1963 in ebony with replacement G15 (green/grey) 15% LTF mineral glass lenses

..you can still easily buy vintage G15 mineral glass (i think they're all poly nowadays) lenses for £60 from ebay  i'm not sure when these date from.. i would guess at the 2000s but they have the dodgy Ray-Ban branding which i would rather avoid...

Oh, this reminds me, I bought some blk/blk 70's Goretex Chucks a few months ago, ive never had Gore Chucks before so just a word of warning, if you're between sizes take the size above (as i did) or size up half a size.

Re- the assembly of regular Hi's, the piece of canvas which makes up the tongue is completely independant of the upper, stitched through just behind the toecap.

    IMG_9322

Re- the gore version, in order to make it waterproof, the pumps are lined with a full gore sock/liner which fully encases the foot up to the 3rd eyelet.

    IMG_9322

..so if like me you have quite wide feet, you can't open up the aperture beyond the 3rd eyelet, no matter how much you loosen the laces making it a bit of a struggle to squeeze your foot in.

    #TipOfTheDay

    Little update on these..

    4586545E-ED97-4780-828D-F84D3AC46C46.thumb.jpeg.cc5f2e5d59dd8202193da257cf8db2b7.jpeg

I’ve been using them for my cycle commute for 3yrs now, I’ve hardly walked in them so the soles are pristine.. within a few months, the stitching started to come undone under no stress whatsoever, but didn’t continue any further than this

    C8A861D1-3395-437B-A5E7-2EC7E8FCF92F.thumb.jpeg.6f538528a147e94742656011c3df26a7.jpeg

The gore lining did fk’all regarding keeping my feet dry and around 6mths ago detached itself from the upper so I had to cut it out with some scissors.. bit of a design flaw having a horizontal stitched seem where your heel goes in/out..

    78817D0F-A7D3-4208-BD48-46673F43A357.thumb.jpeg.4465ce3be405dedb72c70804f0fde5a8.jpeg

..the lining and heel cup were loose so I glued them back to the shoe with superglue which of course crystallised and left a hard ridge rubbing my heel so I can’t even walk to Tesco in them but they’re still ok for riding.

They deserve to see battle again. What’s the size? I’ll buy em and repair and put them to abuse working construction

I don’t want to sell them.. I like them, which is why I took them out of action when I did. Looking back at any of my jeans, when they get to this stage (the 2yr mark) their days are numbered.. I usually just continue to wear them to rags a’la CSF (which will only take a couple more months of daily wear) and bin them because I’m not really capable of doing big repair jobs well... or if I’m wearing them for work I’ll eek them out with patch over patch over patch like those recent SC47s.

These FW47s are one of the few pairs of jeans I’ve ever saved from  that fate..

Just purchased an M11026 jacket in very good used condition, it’s coming from Malaysia so will probably be a few weeks before it arrives. In the meantime, I’m wondering if any of the sugarcane experts here can say anything about the 13oz “extra heavy coarse weave” denim used in the jacket. I know 13oz isn’t quite “heavy weight” denim anymore but am hoping to use this as a work and motorcycling jacket come spring, and hopefully take the place of my thrashed Tenderloin carhartt repro. What relationship does the 13oz denim have to the 14oz “coarse weave” denim used in the M41001 (which I know has at least served @Double 0 Soulnicely in a work application)? I’ll be sure to publish my own findings when the jacket arrives; until then, thanks for any information!

The 13oz denim used for the M11026 is the same whiteline denim used for the M41030 (37 repro)

The M41001 uses 14oz pinkline for their later 47 repro
