What I really like though is that the tight, high stitch count sewing on the back pocket edges hasn't shown the slightest sign of wear - the back pocket stitching coming undone is my biggest gripe with Japanese jeans and a frequent issue on my Samurai and Flat Head pairs. This seems to suggest that 100% cotton threads aren't quite as fragile as I'd assumed, but can be quite sturdy with the right thread/stitch count/sewing technique.

Unraveled back pocket stitching happened on my 1101s at some point though I don’t recall exactly when. Was at least a year into it of mostly daily wear, I’m sure. So, you might be able to avoid it for a while but very much doubt that Fullcount is immune to this syndrome.

It sounds like you might've benefitted from going up one more size. FH jeans tend to run very small for their tag sizes.

Maybe! But not sure I’m psychologically ready for a tag that says 38 (do they make that?!?)!  Three years ago it took a lot of humility to order size 35 samurai 710, size 36 took even a bit more!

  3. Ordered a pair of 3009 from SE last week and wore them for the first time today after 1 warm wash and 1 hot wash (hopefully they don’t shrink too much more over the years)

    A few thoughts.

These Japanese brands are not kind to western body types. I am 6’ and ~190 lbs (so not huge, but probably quite a bit bigger than the average Japanese male), and I’m not exactly swimming in the size 36. Also, I didn’t do any measurements and didn’t look them up, but I’d be surprised if the back rise were much longer than the front rise. These ratios aren’t ideal for those with meatier behind.

Finally, I know people have mentioned the size of the pocket openings and I didn’t really know what to expect. It couldn’t be that bad, right? WRONG. The pocket openings are basically unusable. Once you get your hand in the pocket, the bags are a normal size, but nobody with normal sized hands would be able to get in there without force.

People have blamed Flatheads bizarre sizing on the owner basically making everything to fit himself. Well, he’s not wearing size XL shirts or size 36 pants, so one would think they could do a better job of scaling these measurements to larger sizes. Someone who wears size 36 pants probably has bigger hands than someone wearing 28, so open up those pockets bro!

That being said, i have a size XL of one of their western flannels from this winter, and after throwing it in the dryer, the proportions actually fit me pretty darn well. Usually I have a problem with the really narrow shoulders from these Japanese companies (18” on a lot of brands in my size), so glad the flathead at least gives me something different to worry about. The neck opening is a bit big.

And despite the ridiculousness of some of the measurements, I do think the pants will work for me and am excited to see how they progress.

  4. My wife got me the Longines Heritage Legend diver for a birthday / anniversary gift. A nice change of pace from the black bay. This watch is absolutely beautiful, and a great steal @1600 new. And it has the same movement as my Black Bay (pre in house movement)!

I really want a vintage JLC memovox, but can’t justify it at the moment. This gives the same feel at a fraction of the price.

The best part about this thing is the sapphire crystal rises vertically from the sides of the case for a few millimeters, giving this super thick but still minimalist look.

This is is what I mean about the crystal. Easily gives the watch a few mm of thickness without making it look thick.

  5. Happened to me as well. And when it did I stopped scouring the internet for cool shit and just started buying sale shirts from Bonobos with cool prints and a good fit (for me), with admittedly shitty fabric and maybe questionable production practices (don’t know this last point one way or another; never looked into it). Whatever, don’t want to spend $300 on a shirt that doesn’t fit or doesn’t get me excited about wearing it.  Haven’t skimped on jeans though, but like you said I know what I like and what works for me so not much more to discover.

Anyone have a rundown of the best way to browse/buy from Taobao? I like those faux Patagonia fleece jackets Volvo has been posting lately but I’ve never bought anything from Taobao before. Thanks!

Love those fleeces as well. @volvo240thebests pic in the TCB contest thread (wearing Yuketen or similar instead of the sneaks) had me thinking about if JFK junior had grown up in the 90s.

  7. Still have the jeans. They are going on 7 years old now! Will never get rid of them (not that they’d be much use to anyone!). Maybe my daughter will wear them one day, or a son if I have one. I’ll post some pics soon.

The darning job from indigo proof really is very impressive, despite the thickness of the fabric. The thread color is perfectly blended and it looks like a natural fade, despite being essentially new blue and grey thread.

Looking back through this thread at old Denime has me reconsidering the 30th anniversary XX jeans.
Just waiting for some measurements and thoughts about the fabric from b_F :D

I don’t understand by @beautiful_FrEaK doesn’t just come home early from his vacation, quit his job, and post full time about his pair 30th anniversary Denime :D.

  9. My pair of RS04 looked like that once...

They were becoming pretty threadbare a few years ago so I sent them out for repairs. The darning on the thighs and crotch came back so thick they weren’t very comfortable. I’m sure they would’ve softened up again with wear, but sort of lost interest in being uncomfortable. Plus the repairs were so extensive they were barely the same pants anymore.

Or maybe I just got fat and they didn’t fit...

  10. I picked up a couple of the Supreme Nato (seatbelt type fabric) straps from Crown and Buckle and quite like the look of this khaki one on my Black Bay

  11. Agreed that calf size is a constraining factor for me on these cuts. Thought I would love the relaxed tapered fits because I need the extra room up top and in the thigh, and it’s so hard to find that fit without a 9”+ leg opening, but imo they went too far in the other direction with the leg opening. I basically need to take my pants off just to pull my socks up!

  12. I would never buy a pair of jeans unless they measured 35-36in waist, >= 13in thigh, and <9in leg opening raw. Having these measurements doesn’t guarantee the fit will work, but having something different in any of those areas would guarantee they will not work.

But I would also never look at the measurements if there weren’t something compelling about the denim, details, or brand history.

So, really it all matters to me. If i only cared about fit I would probably just buy something from Bonobos with a little bit of stretch. If I cared only about fabric there are tons of interesting choices that would look absolutely terrible on me.

  13. I don’t have the Roberts, but a similar model on the same last (I think) with a soft toe that was sold through a retailer called Zurick a few years back. I have no complaints. They are four years old now, have seen daily wear for at least 3 of those years, and are still going strong with little to no maintenance.

I really lucked out on theses. They had them on sale and I got them shipped for <$300

You're going to have to thank Levi's for that. Until that latest lawsuit is settled, you're only going to only see brands without red tabs and arcuates online. If you're interested on following the case, its all on public record in the San Francisco courts.

I’ve been out of the game for some time now, and don’t have the motivation to go through 2 years of posts, but BiG still isn’t selling any of the “normal” brands on their site and have totally revamped their product offering. I’m guessing the lawsuit didn’t turn out well for them, or they just decided it wasn’t worth fighting and changed their business model accordingly. Bummer for the denimheads at least.

  15. ^from a demand (or consumer value) perspective the price may be ridiculous but the materials are the same and hand distressing takes a bunch of time with human labor so why shouldn't they charge more?
