  1. You should stop heavily considering the Boondocker and start heavily copping it! Such a great boot... Not an ounce of "city boy" and surprisingly versatile: I can wear it with '47s and Baker Pants but I've also sneaked them into the most prestigious members' club in Hong Kong.

I can understand some people's reservations towards Viberg. I don't like the hysteria that takes place on Styleforum and Reddit but I do think they make the most beautiful boots out there and their construction and finishing is impeccable. I used to dislike the 2030 last before they started adding a partially structured toe because that crumpled low profile toe looked dreadful. Others love it more than anything, so different strokes I suppose. The 2045 and 110 lasts are really quite rugged though, without that cartoonishly overbuilt quality that many Whites have, for example.

As it happens, I just copped a pair of Viberg chukka boots in Aged Bark because I wanted a knockabout casual boot. Looking forward to having those in hand.

  2. Ed, if you're looking for a modern take on the 1947 from Warehouse, the 1001 is probably your best bet. More tapered through the leg than a regular post-war cut and a bit slimmer up top too. Still with a vintage feel though.

  3. Great work Mondo. Those are super nice and have me excited to wear my Canes again at the end of this month. They're back from repairs so I'll have photos up in this thread early June if not before...

  4. I have a pair of 1101 in size 30 and also own a pair of Iron Heart Beatle Busters: I'd say yes, the pockets feel about the same distance apart. The placement of Fullcount pockets only begins to look slightly odd on larger sizes in my opinion.

Congrats on picking up a great pair of jeans.

  5. I have two pairs of Viberg in CXL and my experience was that they did not have so much stretch that it made a discernible difference to relative comfort. Viberg use really thick leather that doesn't give like Alden CXL, for example.

I reckon that a half size up would give the extra width and slight wiggle room that you need in the forefoot. Karanimal's point about where the flex point lines up is important too.

  6. Nozy Roastry, Flugen and Talk and Come Again are my favourites.

Need to hit up switch and omnibus. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

    Is Arise new ?

Ah yes, I forgot Nozy Roastery as well. Had a good pourover brew there. I'm not sure how new Arise is. They only sell pourover coffee and do it to a very high standard and without all of the pseudo-gourmand act that sometimes ruins an otherwise solid coffee shop. Just a relaxed feeling in both places, though they each have their own special character.

And regarding Omotesando Koffee in HK: I wouldn't bother going there again. The decor was marginally nicer than I expected but it's completely without the essence that made the original shop special and the double espresso was nothing to write home about. Just a franchise operation really. Anyone coming to HK and in need of good coffee options - just shout and I'd be happy to help.

  7. Bobbo - Yes, I've recently bought a pair of 1001 and have been really impressed by the banner denim. Easily one of the nicest I've ever handled. Like you, I'm a big fan of both the banner denim and Sugar Cane's standard '47 fabric. The former seems already like it will crock fast and fade a lot quicker than the Canes. My 1947 are at the year mark now but have been super stubborn in giving it up! And that's with jeans... with a jacket it's going to be a proper long haul to fade.

I hear you on the length issue: I also love the true, boxy cut of the original 506XX and 507XX jackets though I need something that hits just over the belt line. My torso must be quite a different length to yours because my Flat Head type II comes just over my belt despite being slightly longer cut in the body, even with my TCB 50s, whereas your WH jacket comes quite some way over your belt. Which JP brands make a properly boxy repro cut?

  8. I was there a couple of weeks back and, among others, hit up Onibus Coffee in Nakameguro, Switch Coffee in Meguro, Arise Coffee Entangle and their sister shop Arise Coffee Roasters in Kiyosumi. Those were the best of the bunch - I really loved both Arise shops. About Life in Shibuya is also strong. Still not made it to Fuglen which seems to be highly rated.

    tokyocoffee.org is a great resource.

  9. Odd, cause the one in Tokyo just closed down.

Maybe they moved to Hong Kong?

Yes, when the news came out last year that the original shop was closing, reports also said that Kunimoto would be relocating to Hong Kong. That was pretty exciting news and a welcome addition to what is already a burgeoning third wave culture in HK. However, the Omotesando Koffee HK branch is part of new commercial development that appears an odd location considering the Tokyo original's spirit. It's all very harsh-lit, decked in marble and styled like a high-end bakery rather than an intimate coffee shop. I'd like to check it out though.

  10. Maybe I'll sound like a total noob here, but can the fabric stretch considerably if there is not a push on it? I get that a waist band would stretch if someone downsizes and it starts off really tight, but if worn TTS there's surely less likelihood of major changes in dimensions?

  11. I've racked up over a year's wear on my Fullcount. The arcs on the back pocket where I keep my phone have totally disintegrated but the one on my wallet pocket is still mostly there. It would be nice to keep them a little longer though not a big deal. Overall, I've found the construction to be completely fine and only had to repair the pocket stitching early on. I guess much of this is about how the cut fits on an individual.

  12. Those shorts are cool and remind me of the kind of thing you'd see in rock-climbing from Wild Things or Manastash. Would look great paired with a plain white tee. The shirt doesn't do it for me at all - it's just a bit too much.

  13. I had a little chuckle at Ryan advising you to be happy with the jeans you have! That's the advice I give to him and we can see how that's turned out...  ;)

The Banner denim really is something special and I love the cut of the 1001. If you already have the 800 and the 1001SXX it might feel a little redundant getting a cut that sits between the two though. I've only worn the 1001 once because I want to save that crunchy new denim feeling for the autumn... What really surprised me was how overloaded with indigo the denim was and how much they bled: I went round to a colleague's new apartment for a house-warming and left blue marks on her white wall where I'd been sitting. Whoops! That hasn't happened since I wore Flat Heads I don't think.
