  1. http://run100miles.com/ultra-resources/50-mile-training-program/

so i shared this link with our prodigal son, jackg, thought it might be useful for anyone getting into running longer distances/ultras/etc.

I've done quite a few 50s and 100s.  Just some thoughts on that... For a first 50, this is not an ideal plan.

-Taking 2 days off per week is a bad plan.  Especially when doing super long distances, developing an ability to actively recover is important.

Don't plan an off week.  Odds are good that you're going to get sick at some point if you're pushing yourself in training for 17 weeks, so just take the off week when it's necessary.

-The weekends of weeks 10-13 are too much first time out for a 50.  That's just asking for an injury for most people.  I would recommend doing good long runs, but those are the runs that should be at race pace.  If the 50 is going to take you, say, 10 hours, you should definitely be able to do 4-5 hours in training at the same pace, which will allow you to practice your fueling strategies in a realistic setting.  I would suggest one weekend of back to back long runs, maaaaaybe 2, but absolutely not 4 weeks in a row of this.

-Those tempo runs are far too short.  "Tempo" is the sort of pace that can be sustained for roughly 75 or 80 minutes, ie roughly 10 mile pace to half marathon pace for more serious club level runners.  Doing 3 miles at 10 mile or half marathon pace isn't going to do much for you.  Tempo runs should be worked up to at least 8+ miles, even for a 50 miler.

-The author doesn't encourage marathon pace at any point.  Even for running a 50, having strength at marathon pace is quite important.  In fact, I would suggest that workouts stressing marathon and tempo pace should be the foundation for most individuals looking to run well at any distance of half marathon or longer.

-If you want to run your first 50 well, I would suggest making the plan more similar to a standard marathon training plan, just with two changes:  Have a mid-week easy day of somewhere around 13-18 miles to allow your body to become very attuned to the idea of a pretty long run without beating yourself up.  Also, do a small number of longer long runs in the 30-35 mile range, done at approximately 50 mile effort.

  2. great to hear your getting better collin (your looking pretty health above!!!) hopefully its a speedy recovery. Where to cop those christopher kane galaxy print running shorts? haha

They are by BOA.  Runningwarehouse.com has those and a few other pretty awesome pairs.  I bought those, the US Flag, the green/yellow leopard, and the orange/black tiger print.  Definitely get some funny comments about my running shorts. :)

  3. Sorry for my disappearance recently.  I've been somewhat injured (hip issues, not super serious, but enough to knock me out of running for a few weeks).  Finally got back out today for a beautiful run up in Cardiff Fork.  I brought a camera along to take some photos and give my hip a little rest mid-run.  Here's a couple of them:

This time of year is just fantastic...  100-ish degrees down in the valley, 80-ish up in the mountains during the run.

I missed my marathon planned for early summer, but I already had a couple races during the build-up that were stronger than expected, so I'm not as disappointed as I could be.  Planning for the future, I'm probably going to do another road marathon in September and then I'm itching to apply the strength I've developed over the last 9 months towards another 50 or 100 miler.  I'll only start a 100 if I think I can be competitive for the win in a legitimate race - if not, there's a fast 50 miler here in Utah in October, so it would be nice to take down my 50 mile PR (haven't run one since 2009).  For now, I just need to ensure that I become 100% healthy so I can start logging big mileage and hard workouts again. :)

  4. These are a tagged size 31? I like the fit. I'm in the market for a pair of 710s myself and I would like a similar fit. How did you size on these?

In response to b_F on page 624... My eternals may be tagged size 28 but the waist actually stretched out to a 31 (my actual waist size), I've grown a bit in the waist area from squatting over the past year so I guess my eternals have grown with me haha, I do not need to wear a belt with them.

Do you really think a tagged size 31 in 710 (TTS) would be too big? I'm expecting some growth and I would prefer not having skin tight jeans after a couple washes (happened to my 3sixteen and 5010xx both tagged 28). I would like my samurais to become  a pair of jeans I can still wear in a couple years without being too tight.

Thanks.  Keep in mind that these are right out of the wash and a hot dry, so this is as tight as they get.  I sized up one (true waist size of 30), so if you want them to fit like this normally (not just right out of the wash), you'll want to go TTS or even maybe one down.

  5. 710s posted a few days ago got their first wash (they originally had an initial hot soak).  Waist shrunk down to 30.75" (size 31), but length didn't change much.  I like the way they fit right now a lot, but still need to get a hem, so I'm going to get that taken care of in the next few days.  I usually have an inseam of 33-34", but these are still triple cuffed in these photos.  I'm starting to think that maybe getting a 30 would've been optimal, but I can live with them slightly loose once they've stretched back out.

  6. HC-SF-43.  One of the best things my jeans have done so far.

Got in some pretty intense wear today, day 1 of Snowbird Ski Resort's closing weekend:

On one of the pond runs, the 710s came pretty darn close to getting their first wash:

  7. a hem might help...in any case a hem would probably be a good idea

Yeah, I'm planning on it in the future, but want to make sure that all the shrink is out of the way before I shorten them.  I gave them an initial hot soak, but while the waist shrunk up, the length didn't change much, so I imagine they will shorten more in a full wash.  If I hem before that, they may end up being too short after I wash them.

  8. Man the fit difference between Cander and Bradl is so big.. The latter being the fit I'd prefer to get.

FYI, I sized up one, whereas his look like he sized down.  If you don't like my fit, don't size up...  The upper block seems quite loose compared to most pairs, even though I have big upper legs.  That said, a slightly looser pair is going to fade better, not to mention that I'm sick of nuthuggers, especially when I'm wearing them for 2 years for HWDC2, so I don't really mind.  The one thing that I don't like is that they tend to balloon a lot right at the knee.  Probably not much I can do about that?

Oh, and a few fit pics...  Nearly 3 months of wear!  I have a bit of a hip injury (running related) right now, so they haven't been worn as hard over the last 2 weeks or so, but I'm still wearing them daily!

For my contest entry, I decided that I would honor a great and soon to be returning (on Sunday) TV show, rather than a movie.  So, I blue myself and edited the Arrested Development season 2 promo poster:

  11. I got a garmin forerunner 610 last week! took it for a spin today and was very impressed. very good watch. also did my first proper distance marathon run (albeit at training pace).

That's pretty legit.  I've got the 110 and would love to have one of those, but can't justify the price tag.

  12. Huge half marathon PR today (1:15), unbelievably stoked on that.  Just put up the report on endomondo!  I'm starting to think that being sick affected me more than I realized in my one recent marathon (2:50), so it will be exciting to see how much faster I can go next time out, 5 weeks from now.

1 month into the contest, 2 months of wear.
