  1. Ok, last shots for the 2nd contest, I swear!  I just really like being outside in the mountains, so this one was easy for me!  In fact, earlier today, I went for a nearly 3 hour run on some super gnarly terrain a few canyons over from where I went tonight.  Too bad I wasn't wearing my jawnz for that... could have gotten some ridiculous pictures.

Nice views at Alta Ski Resort before sunset:

My younger brother took all of my contest photos for me while in town visiting.  Here's him preparing a shot (taken with my cell phone):

See his photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/brennananderson/ .  He's exceptionally good!

And, of course, some crappy cell phone shots of my jawnz's progress:

Truest shot of the color I've gotten recently:

Contrast, but much darker than true color:

  3. HC-SF-43, SAM 710.

Just a couple more contest 2 pics for now. :)

  4. HC-SF-43, Sam 710s with ~5 months wear

Part one of my entry (there will be another 2-ish parts from other locations in the next few days).

    Great outdoors:

    Yeah, they got salty.

  5. looks like cander and I had the same idea. I had to stop and play a piano in st. pancras station on my way to France. way out of tune and some keys didn't work, but it was fun. excuse the awful shoes.

Haha, nice.  The pedal didn't work on all notes on the one I found.  Imagine Ukrainian late-Romantic music without pedal!

By the way, nice Kinvara 3s.  Those (in the same colorway) are my most common day-to-day non-specific-workout running shoes!

  6. HC-SF-43, 710xx.  3 months into the contest, 4 months wear.

My jeans spent a some time yesterday fixing a broken air conditioner for a friend.  She couldn't really afford to hire the technician (150 for parts, another 400 for labor) to fix it, so I figured I could do it myself, since I'm most of the way through my engineering PhD and am handy with electronics.  Had to replace the motor, the outtake line, and a few other pieces associated with the motor, which was a huge pain in that tiny room.  Fortunately, she didn't have to pay someone $400 for labor.

Everything associated with this job was dirty, from the filthy water that leaked all over the floor, to the grime all over the old motor, so my 710s are about as dirty as they've ever been.  Time for a wash tonight.  The A/C is working well again, which is good, considering that her house was 91 F / 33 C degrees when I started working on it (it's really really hot in Utah right now...).

    Edit, post-wash:

  7. ^holy crap! That's how 710s are supposed to look / fade. So many updates (also in IHF) that show great evo - wouldn't have expected that within the first  three months.

Still - I wonder why my 19 oz denim looks much more royal blue than your greyish 710s (or my older stock ones). The colour reminds me much more of the 21 oz denim.

Thanks Max!  Means a lot coming from the Samurai master. :)  Keep in mind that these are 4 months of wear, not 3, as I planned down to the day to get exactly 30 days of amnesty wear before the contest started.  The color is a little more electric blue in person, but my camera is rather crappy, so they just never quite turn out right in the photos.  When the contest is said and done, I'll get someone with a nice DSLR to take my final pics!

  9. great tips!  gonna keep em in mind.  so would you suggest running all 7 days?

and what amount of mileage do you suggest hitting per week/day?

How many days a week you run depends on what you can handle.  I would suggest 6 or 7.  Some people do better with 6, some with 7.  I don't like to take days off in heavy training, but that's just me.

Mileage is also based on what you can handle.  Mileage should be all about what you can do every week without overreaching.  Yes, you should have some bigger weeks and some easier weeks, but your average week should be sustainable for months at a time.  Figure out what level that is and increase it a bit (5-10 mpw more) each season.  Frequently going beyond 100mpw is debatable.  Some people respond well to it, while some get no extra benefit, even if they're capable of handling it.  Once you're able to sustain 100mpw, I think you'll have a pretty good idea of what you can handle.  Cameron Levins (2012 NCAA 5000/10000 Champ, multi-time Canadian National Champ, 11th in olympics at 23) frequently runs over 150 miles in a week, but Bernard Lagat (several time world champ, 2nd fastest ever at 1500, and a dude who got 4th in the Olympics 5000 at age 37) only runs 60, which is probably part of his longevity.  I think more mileage (up to 100mpw) is generally better, as long as you can handle it without injury or overtraining (it takes years to be able to handle this), but it's definitely a personal thing to figure out.
