  1. man, thrift stores outside of california seem great.

you're telling me. nyc thrift stores are picked over and employees are taught to look for the good stuff. when i was visiting my grandmother in the middle of nowhere the one thing i was hoping to be able to do was get some cool stuff at the thrift stores. no luck at all.

cheap seems to have some real skill at this, and know where to go.

  2. I honestly don't care for the look of selvedge so I wouldn't be afraid to taper if so.

ok guys, i have some rocks, if we back him into that corner over there, i'm pretty sure we can stone the infidel to death with them.

  3. if anyone has a PBJ tote they still have but don't utilise, I'd be glad to buy it off you. haha. thanks.

i have one. i'm not very likely to let it go, despite never using it, but out of curiosity, what would you pay for it?

  4. guys, how much will black knight stretch?

right now im having problem buttoning up the top 2 buttons........... :(

    pre or post soak?

i had trouble with the buttons on mine, not because they were too tight, but because the button holes need to be worked in a bit before they get easier to fasten. are your difficult because the waisband is too tight or are they hard to button up even when you aren't wearing them?

  5. Finally got to go to the NYC store yesterday, the first time in over five year that I stepped foot in Uniqlo Store since the ones in Jersey closed. The place was a mad house, as expected, but that god I got what I was looking for.

I managed to get a pair of selvedge S-001s and it was well worth the price. I'm going to start sometime next week wearing them, after I soak them first.

they are sanforized, so if you're looking to shrink them, a soak isn't going to work. if you are just looking to get the starch out, then go ahead.

  6. Well my Black Knights are retired untill I get them repaired hoping it last a little longer.

what repair did they need this time?

mine started to come apart at the left hip, but i brought them to BiG and gordon fixed them right up. i thought it was a fluke but it seems that there have been a lot of repairs needed for the black knights. i wonder what the issue is.

  7. Yeah I'm surprised people didn't jump on these as the new LHT contest jeans. I can't wait to get my self a pair. Oh and to the other Black Knight owners are your pairs ridiculously soft now mine feel like my chinos and not 19oz denim.

mine are not soft, although they have had only an initial hot wash and dry to get the shrinkage out.

they are showing a lot of fading already in some places. i'll get around to some pics soon.

So far, my Black Knights have only had two soaks.

Initial soak and the other about 2-3 weeks ago at around the 3 month mark.

I noticed that the button fly buttons have started to show their true colors of bronze (black coating rubbing off) AND the silver backing is actually rusting.

Is this at all normal? I don't wear them very hard and never had this happen to any of my other four pair of jeans that I've worn for an even longer amount of time (8+ months each)

    Pics soon!

i noticed the button fly thing, i think it looks cool.

  8. i updated my uniqlo entry despite the minimal fading at this point. at least they are broken in to my body shape and you can compare the way they look vs. brand new.

  9. ^ Haha! Wait til you get into road cycling... ;)

    or judo.

judo can be painful for hairy guys, they grab for the lapel and get a handful of chest hair along with it. since i look like sasquatch, i buzz my chest a few times a year to try to minimize that effect.

  10. just dropped in at barneys coop while walking by, and checked out their evisu selection.

saw raw pairs of no.3, looked like painted gulls to my eyes, red/blue selvedge, made in macau.

i'll wait till i'm in tokyo in may, personally, but wanted to spread the info.

just wanted to clarify that the gulls could certainly be silkscreened and i wouldn't have known. it *looked* like paint, but i'm not sure.

  11. ok, here you go. 008 one wash version, bought in may 09, worn pretty much 1/2 of the time since then (i wear jeans to work, but am a sysadmin and sit a lot.) 4-5 washes. couple of times in the dryer on low for max shrinkage.

i took a full shot of the back but it was blurry. sorry, but my combs aren't that great anyway.

  12. did anybody buy a 008 and has some evolution pics to share?

i'll try to take some pics soon and post them. have been meaning to do it for the wiki anyway.

mine were purchased in may and worn roughly half the time since then (rotated with other jeans.)

they are showing some nice fades.

  13. Hey guys, I'm heading to Japan next week, planning on going to Ueno and I'm looking for PBJ xx-007's, anyone know if hinoya will have them in a size 30? or should i head to the actual PBJ store?

hinoya has a good selection of PBJ, but a visit to the PBJ store can be really nice as well.

the PBJ store is a lot harder to find than hinoya however, so be sure you have a good idea where you are going.

one thing to think of is that i believe that hinoya can do chainstitch hemming in-store, while the PBJ store will take a week to hem your jeans. not sure if that affects things for you.

  15. bollocks.fill the bathtub, jump in,jump out, place yourself on a towel in front of an old black and white TV and watch Ready ,Steady,Go! at full blast.than wait til your father is running into the room shouting abuses to you.thats the mod-approved Quadrophenia way.

Oh,wait-your the father now? well, teach it to your daughter then like i do.

    the best way for sure.

might be hard to find a b/w tv or a broadcast of ready stead go, so here's the modern version:

    1) set computer monitor to greyscale

    2) load up youtube of ready steady go

    3) then follow the steps above.

  16. I dropped that bit of wisdom on a vegan at a party that was complaining how her construction-working husband couldn't find "ethical" shoes that held up. When I suggested horse, she looked at me like I was advocating the murder or infants. Even after I explained that horse hide could only come from animals that had naturally died she went into some rant about how I'd feel if someone was wearing my skin. And, honestly, if my carcass aged like FQHH, I would want it on some denimheads back.

it was my understanding that most non-exotic leather (i.e. normal cowhide, horsehide, etc.) is a by product rather than a primary product. by that, i mean that the animal was not killed for the hide, but for another reason, and that the hide is sold off as a by product.

once an animal has been killed, i feel that all the parts should be used if possible, and for that reason, even though i don't eat meat, i do wear leather.

and for the record, i hate arguing with vegans, so many of them are pricks, and i hate getting lumped in with them because i don't eat meat for my own reasons.

  17. i'll be shopping for some new jeans in tokyo the first week of may. very interested to see what is available at that time (in terms of tabs, arcs, etc.)

i am of course aware that i am gambling by not ordering ahead, but i am willing to see what i can get. the fact that i generally wear a 32 and that is one of the most common sizes is something that i have considered. are the 2nd and pirates brick and mortar shops in tokyo? i was thinking of going there in addition to americaya.

  18. E-mail response from Gordon...I really hope he doesn't mind me posting this but you all deserve to read it anyways...

"I understand your concerns and can tell you that the recent price increase of Samurai products was a very tough decision for us to make but was done out of necessity. The continued weakening dollar against the stronger yen, which we hoped would have rebounded by now, coupled with increased shipping rates and taxes on imported items has left us no choice if we wish to maintain a healthy business structure. Again, the wholesale discounts in Japan are much less than the US average, not including the additional import costs, which make it much tougher to keep prices comparable or even anywhere close to Japanese retail prices.

The price for Samurai’s basic models was set at $285 the day we opened for business in Feb. 2006 and has remained unchanged in those 4 years until today. We’ve taken a loss for the last year and half on their products and have tried our best to offer our customers the most competitive price possible. I still feel we’re doing so if taken into full consideration all the costs associated with importing Japanese clothing into the USA and hope that our customers will understand that this increase in our prices is just enough to help us to continue offering these products outside of their country of origin.

That being said we will try our best to keep the price of the contest jeans fair and reasonable with all production and import costs considered.

    Regards,

    Gordon"

i'm glad gordon wrote about this, as i suspected as much.

if you track the average value of the yen/dollar from 2006, the dollar has dropped a lot in terms of value, and you are kidding yourself if you think it has regained its past value, but don't take my word for it, google for the graphs.

  19. Sorry i understand completely, I searched 008 fit and found nothing. I'm not new to forums at all though. All of this denim stuff is very new to me though.

it's all good. i understand that the search function on here is essentially useless, because most of the useful search terms are too short for the search engine.

so trying to search for "008" isn't going to work. maybe someone else has figured out how to word searches properly (and if so they should start a thread that gets stickied) but i just resigned myself to reading all these threads in their entirety. yes that take a lot of time, obviously i am often not busy at work most of the time.

the only thread with sizing/fit info on the 1st page is the samurai thread, but even then if you want to see a pic you're going to have to read the thread.

it sort of sucks, but that's what we have to deal with to be able to get a good fit on difficult to find jeans that we have to order from an online source.
