  1. People say "wash them when they're dirty", but they get dirty after a day. Or if thats extreme, a week.

really? they get *dirty* after a day? what the hell are you doing in them?

i tell you what gets dirty in a day. my judo gi. when i'm done with judo for the day, that gi is completely soaked with sweat (mine and other people's) and it stinks. it smells really bad, and if i was dumb enough to not wash it, it would smell even worse the next day, so it goes right in the wash after every training session.

jeans (in general) do not get that dirty in a day, but if they do, then wash them. i tend to need to wash my jeans every couple of months, but your mileage may vary. one way to tell if jeans need a wash? they start to smell bad.

this is *not* complicated, guys, so stop over-thinking this stuff and wash your clothes when they need to be washed.

  2. sixsisxtie:that's exactly what i want my 710 to look like in 2 yrs.

the_ming: never heard of freezer trick? leave your jeans in the freezer over night and your jeans will no longer smell. And one more trick for those who are going to give up wearing your favorite pair just because it's hot out, use a bacteria spray that you spray onto equipments. This will kill odour, bacteria, fungus. It also prevents any of those things from happening to your jeans.

yeah i've heard of the freezer trick, but i think it's probably a better idea to [wash your jeans when they smell bad. but hey, do whatever you want, they're your jeans. remember, though, that you can get used to a lot of smells and not even notice them anymore (cigarette smokers are a classic example of this) so although you may not smell your jeans, that hot girl who doesn't seem to want to get with you might be able to smell them, so maybe you should get a second opinion after the "freezer trick". again, it's your life, and your jeans, do what you want.

i do suggest that you not let the comments of strangers on the internet get your panties in a bunch, however, cause that makes you come off like a little bitch with sand in your vagina. :)

  3. thanks guys for the awesome comments!

anyways, cali ain't got nothing on AZ. I'm rocking my 710 19 oz. still even though its 107 out. Well its gona be 109 tomorrow and gona be 118 next month haha. But im not giving up wearing my 710.

    you must smell marvelous.

  4. 19oz jeans in the hot cali heat is not the businesss!!!!

my 19oz black knights are definitely on hiatus until the fall. trying to put some wear into my evisus but even those have been no good for the past week here as i got laid off from work and am not in air conditioned office-land 8 hours a day.

  5. I agree with you about the comfort, but I can't agree about it looking funky in the toebox. The Modified is absolutely my favourite Alden last in terms of look. It has a really vintage appearance which may not be to everyone's taste but I love it....goes great with old school denim. It also looks absolutely unique. Nothing from anyone else looks anything like it.

Unfortunately, as you mentioned, nice make ups on it are generally expensive and difficult to find outside Japan and Anatomica in Paris. Moulded shoe usually have the Norwegian split toe model in this last, though, which is a great looking shoe IMO.

The other thing about the Modified last is that you really need to be fitted by someone who knows what they are doing to find your correct size. Your size in the Modified doesn't usually have much to do with what you wear in other lasts. It also doesn't work at all for some people's feet.

Buying your first pair on the Modified last on the internet is therefore likely to be something of a crap-shoot. Good luck with it.:)

just got them and they feel and look great. going to try them on with a suit in a little bit and get the wife's opinion, wear them around the house and make sure they fit right so if i need to return them i can.

i have high arches and suffer from "judo toe" (where your pinky toe is broken repeatedly and you end up needing a bit more room in the toebox because of it) so i may have stumbled upon my perfect last by "ordering my first pair on the modified last on the internet"

maybe i should start shooting craps too, eh?

  6. Great last - very comfortable. They look a little funky in the toe box but you'll get used to them. Very limited styling on the Modified but Alden Store sometimes has them on sale. If you like they way they fit, but them - very comfortable shoes. If you want more variety in the US on that Last - go to Moulded Shoe. If you want real variety on that last - you'll need to purchase thru Japan or Anatomica in Paris. You're gonna pay up big to buy the so be prepared - but if you want real variety, you have no choice....

Also - once you've found your size in Modified Last - signup for Shoe Mart seconds list and hang out till there's a second in your size coming out of Japan, France or Moulded Shoe...

well, i found a pair on the seconds list and will be getting them in the mail soon. i hope they are as nice as i think they will be and will post pics.

  7. what do you guys know about the alden modified last?

after taking the advice posted about shoemart.com and factory seconds, i went to the alden store and got sized (7E in aldens, 8D in most shoes) and now have a chance to get some nice alden dress shoes for a steep discount. the only thing that i am unsure about is the last. what is the modified last?

  8. I would skate in them, and wearing 19oz denim in the summer while being active was a good recipe for sweat.

as humid as it gets here, i wouldn't even think of skating in my 710s, hell, i probably won't wear them much until fall, really.

...no matter how serious you can get with denimzzzz when you can smell your own jeans they need to be cleaned.

dude. i wish my brother would figure that out, but as i tell my wife: as long as girls still keep having sex with him smelling like that, he's not going to wash the jeans, so blame those little sluts.

  9. hey guys, just need some opinion. what belt color fits the best forxx-007 Black or Tan/brown belt?

    Thankzzzz.......

traditionally one matches the color of their belt to their shoes (when wearing dress shoes anyway) i don't try to match the belt with sneakers though.

i have a LGC black belt as well that i wear with almost everything, but i know i need to get a brown one for when i wear brown shoes.

  10. i decided that i didn't want to leave my evisus with double-cuffs so i gave them another hot wash/hot dry and they only shrunk 1/4" in length so i decided to gamble on that being the end of the shrinkage and dropped them off at self edge to get them hemmed. told them to leave about an inch extra for a half-cuff or stack, just in case these shrink more somehow.

i know that i'm gambling here, but i figure i can always pull on the legs after washing to get back a little length if the shrinkage continues. don't plan on ever doing a hot wash or machine dry again, so i should be ok. i'll get them back by the end of the week and let's hope i don't regret my choice.

the patch has been doing very well, has taken 3 or 4 coats of obenhauf's LP, and seems to always want more. the color has not darkened but the hot washes have faded the text on the patch to the point where it's not legible at all anymore. i definitely suggest using obenhauf's on the patch, no matter what wash/dry method you may use.

  11. I'm thinking about purchasing some 005s. Ive read in the thread that they stretch a lot in the waist. Currently, im wearing a size 29 in the 710s, and really like the fit. The measurements in the thigh and knee are pretty similar to a size 30 in the pbj005s. Im worried about the waist though. How would you guys advise i size?

i have both 008 and 710 in 32 and while the waist is too big on the 008s, everything else is nice and comfortable. you *might* might be able to do a 29 in the PBJs but i would think that you'll have to do the shrinkage while wearing them and all that jazz and be prepared for a rough break-in period. depends on how tight you like your jeans.

  12. fit is like mine after 2 hot soaks. is it a tripple cuff? what's the inseam on yours right now?

the inseam is slightly less than 34" from a tagged 35" (forgot to measure pre-wash) so i'm concerned that there's a good deal more shrinkage to go on the inseam.

it's a double-cuff, i think (edge flipped up and then rolled over, and then rolled over again)

The fit's very good...i have to do a double take every time I see that black selvage though as my brain always tells me that it's stitched...

yeah, me too. although i don't think the selvedge looks as nice as others i have seen, i wonder how it will age (i.e. as the denim fades it may look better.)

that's a big part of why i want to figure out the shrinkage left, though, as i am considering hemming them close to my actual inseam and not cuffing them at all, but that's a dangerous gamble at this point if i might lose another 2 inches in inseam to shrinkage.

maybe another hot wash and dry is in order, from what i have read on this thread i won't lose much indigo if i do that.

  13. haven't had a moment to finish taking the post-wash/dry pics and post all of the pics, but i have to say, as cheap said, these are the finest jeans i have ever owned.

i followed the evisu advice to the letter, and my patch didn't get destroyed (wetting it before and once during the drying process seemed to take care of that.) i put on some obenhauf's after it was dry and that seemed to help to condition the patch a bit, i want to do another coat tonight, as it seems to have absorbed all the obenhauf's and still wants more.

one question, these have shrunk an absurd amount (forgot to measure pre-wash size, so i'm not sure exactly how much) but before i hem them, i am wondering how much they will continue to shrink in length, if at all.

will post the pics by tomorrow, but thanks to everyone for the advice!

  14. i checked out some edwin leepros at the edwin store in harajuku, and was surprised to see them at around 18,000 yen. for some reason i thought they would be cheaper. at that price it's easy to go for the price jump to the higher-end leepros.

  15. Just wait for the new lot or for Samurai to release the new arc which looks very much like the old one. Plus it looks like they keeping the red tab.

yeah this is the truth. i am in japan this week and i saw the new arcs, and they have a red tab, when i was at americaya in ueno, tokyo.

you just have to wait a couple of months for the next lot to ship out to the stores. be patient and you will get arcs and tabs.

timing sucked for me, though, as they only had the 710s without arcs and with a white tab right now, and i ain't about paying those proxy & shipping fees.

  16. I oiled the patch with Red Wing boot oil.

I have to say the only thing on these jeans that isn't top-notch is the leather patch. It looks and feels cheap (at least to me). And if you oil it, it loses color.

thanks for the replies! i think i need to max out the shrinkage on these as i got a 34 on their advice. i'll follow their advice to the letter and post the results for the benefit of all.

they told us that the patch is sheep leather, which may be why it seems odd, but i do know what you mean about it seeming odd. i'll have to see how it ages.

will post up pics on monday when i get home and put these through the process.

  17. mrs. the_ming got some mulbec's from dry bones, and they are *very* nice. they are a different cut than the others posted on this thread, as well.

will post up some pics in a few days when we get back from tokyo

  18. posting from tokyo.

picked up a pair of no.1 in the 2000 cut. you guys were right, these are some amazing denim. i decided not to get the gulls painted and left the pockets plain, partially because they would have had to wash them for me, paint them, and have me pick them up a few days later (and that would have been my last day here, when i will be very busy and won't have time to go there.) the other reason is that my wife feels that in nyc the evisu gulls are only worn by thug hip-hop types, and she didn't want me to get them. one last reason was that i mostly wanted them because of the quality and the denim, rather than for the branding.

oh well, if i change my mind i can get them painted next year or if i go to paris in september.

the sales girl gave us a complicated washing routine, most of which i was going to do anyway (wash them twice with no detergent, then hot dry to get all the shrinkage out) but i was interested in what some of the experienced guys did with their leather patch. she said that i should make sure the patch is really wet before putting them in the dryer, and then take them out halfway through the drying process to re-wet the patch, and keep it from shrinking dramatically and cracking.

what about coating it with obenhauf's LP? what did you do CTB?

  19. ones all black stitching patch rivets

the other is regular yellow stitching regular patch and rivets etc.

aren't his questions sort of moot now that both models are sold out and won't be re-stocked?
