  1. Love my MBP15, I was a PC person until I started working in a lab. It seems like most people use Macs for making figures in Illustrator and for presentations. But yeah when I started grad school, they gave me a $1500 computer stipend, so I got a MBP15" 2.53GHz for about $100!

  2. I'm speaking of the leather wrangler detail on the backpocket (which, as explained, can be removed). I think that a direct mix of the classic details, levi's tab and wrangler's leather "tab" (along with the jin arcs) on the same pocket will be a bit too much (it could be done the other way around). I think that the two should be on different pockets, but I'm probably thinking uselessly though. Please do correct me if what I'm saying is blasphemous.

lolz I understand now. These will look great don't worry ppl

Primary ferment/bottling bucket. Don't worry, I noticed the lid wasn't on all the way and I pushed it all the way down.

    Updates on bottling day!

So basically it depends if you are going to be shooting food at restaurants, where you'll have to use available light or if you are setting stuff up at home or in a studio when you can control light.

You don't really need a micro lens for shooting food because most of the time you'll want to include the whole plate and micro lenses are for really high reproduction 1:1. Macro lenses also usually have higher optical quality(color rendition and sharpness) which is not necessarily as important when you are just taking pictures of food. More important than the camera body is light. Meaning D70 would be fine at ISO 400 if you can set-up the shot or bounce a flash off the wall. But if you are at a restaurant then you'll likely have to use available light, in which case a newer body with better high ISO performance and large aperture >f/2 would make better pictures.

tl;dr What kind of photography you want to do will drastically affect recommendations for lens/body combos

  5. soonami - are those materials for making spirits/beer next to ya?

Brewing an Amber Ale! X-mas present ftw

^looks like moonshine! Awesome jean/boot combo soonami.

i think it's funny (not bad, just notable) that a number of online retailers are selling "vintage american wool" now through their sites. for example, i own this exact shirt.

    http://www.contextclothing.com/item.php?id=1341

I found it at a buffalo exchange five years ago for ~$12, and i love it. I'm a little bit curious where is this stuff coming from for them... anyone on the west coast can usually find these easily in thrift stores and resale shops, but styles and quality will obv. vary. and many have been washed, making them really short in the arms (good for some, bad for others).

Basically what you said, they have shoppers that scour thrift stores for weeks or months looking for vintage pieces to re-sell. These shirts aren't necessary difficult to find, I have bought 8-10 in the past couple years through occaisional thrifting, but they aren't always for sale when you want to buy them, which is why resellers like Context can stockpile them and then sell them for so much.

  6. TCLA, it shouldn't be that much. I think the goal, with 100+ orders would be a custom Samurai jean for something closer to $250, maybe even less. This is because although we are voting b/w different features, nothing is actually "custom" except the screening on the patch--everything else is mix and match from everything Samurai already has in stock for other jeans, which retails for $285USD anyway

  7. I've grown indoor plants before and used CFL for indoor lighting. It's a pain to get enough to put out enough light, but definitely much cheaper than Metal Halide. I would just make sure you get lights that have a color temperature that is "cool white" or "daylight" as these can be better utilized by the plants.

The really nice thing is that the bulbs don't put out much light and the only ventilation you would need is for the odor. But like others have said, it screws into regular lightbulb sockets, they're easy to get and cheap

  8. You homebrew? That's killer

EDIT: I just remembered There's a free talk on Monday about "The Origin & Evolution of Beer" at National Mechanics.

Apparently it's part of a series of talks held each month by "Academy of Natural Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the Chemical Heritage Foundation, the Mütter Museum, and the Wagner Free Institute of Science." which is quite a pedigree.

Anyway, does anyone wanna go? Drink beer while discussing beer and jawns?

Yeah my lady got me a homebrew kit for Christmas

I'd be down to go to National Mechanics tomorrow, but I have to give a talk tomorrow at lab meeting that starts at 5 and lasts until 7ish. I'd be a little late, coming from West Philly, but I'll show if anyone else wants to go

Pocket/bag dump. I was looking for my Goddamn Skeletool, which I've officially resigned as being lost. I broke it twice (pliers and blade) and had it replaced each time, so I don't feel too bad buying a new one.

    Card Tool

    Corter Wallet and Reign

    Leatherman Wave

    Keys with Atwood MetWrench

    Phone

    160Gb iPod Classic

    Two Zippos, one from Warehouse

    Ton of pens

Two packs of cigs for variety

    Gum

    Warehouse Contest Bandana

As for the two lighters, as an occasional smoker, I NEED to have a lighter work when I want a smoke. Also, the stack of pens is absolutely required as a scientist because I find myself always needing to label gels, figures, etc in different colors and thicknesses.

On the keys is a hook I made from annealed copper bonsai wire, if anyone is interested in one, I'll make one for you, just Paypal me some money for shipping and stuff.

    Description of shit:

  10. Since there will likely not be a majority voting for any one pocket, I think that I might be a good idea to have a 2 or 3-way run-off vote so that most people will get what they would like. Especially since about half the people want Wrangler style pockets (4 & 9) and half want Levi's style (1, 3, 7,8).

    Now, a partisan comment:

What I don't understand about the wrangler people is that if you don't want the leather patch, why not just remove the stitching holding the patch on so that we can get our Wrangler-style pockets? Or else we'll just end up with another Levi's repro contest...
