I think that the dialogue here is a little more complicated than it may seem at first.
Japanese culture has an infamous tradition for being xenophobic; there's no denying that the maintainance of so-called "cultural heritage" and a distinct national identity is a high priority in Japanese society (despite the "contradictory" inclusion of foreign elements. The adaptation of Chinese Characters into Japanese Kanji, the word "arigato" actually coming from the Protuguese "obrigado" being two prime examples... this is another dialogue altogther, though)
As a result, when so-called "foreign" elements are introduced into Japanese culture, they are often viewed with a fetishistic eye (they even have a whole other alphabet to describe foreign objects and concepts, Katakana).
Case in point, the Southern Cross. I don't think they are aware of the social meanings and implications of its image; they simply view it as another part of American history (and, for better or worse, it IS a part of our history). I mean, think about how an outsider would view the Southern Cross... there are plenty of people in the US who still wear it, who still fly those colors, hell it's even still on some State Flags. Why wouldn't they think that it's just another symbol for the US?
This isn't to say that the Japanese are blameless for appropriating Racially charged imagery. The fetishizing of African-American culture is something that I find disturbing at times. When I visited Japan a few years back, my Japanese friend told me about how some African immigrants were passing themselves off as African-Americans in order to pick up girls. Other things that threw me off were the rampant proliferation of minstrel imagery and caricatures and the ganguro subculture and its Blackface overtones.
So as I had earlier stated, the dialogue is definitely complex when it comes to the intersection of Japanese and American culture: what is being lost in translation? where do you draw the line between cultural participation and cultural fetishizing?

Rise is a bit high butnot overwhelmingly high. Still thinking about sizing down 1, will see.
I soaked them twice sofar. I<'mknow thinking about resoaking themand throwing em in the dryer for 30 minutes, take out all the shrinking. Will post update tonight.
I don't think you should size down anymore... to me they look almost uncomfotably tight. see how much they stretch out with normal wear before changing.

Hi Madeline,
Was wondering what sort of selection you guys have over there of vintage sweatshirts?
I'm paricularly interested in anything that has either side gussets or longer cuffs (I think 4 inches is the vintage sweatshirt junkie standard )
Thanks in advance...

That cut is also very shallow in the crotch area, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was subject to high stress

might be worth going back last day? most sample sales do another series of reductions on the last day, though you also have to deal with depleted stock. I like R&B enough that I might do that.

wow, those look pretty washed out for just 7 months... I'd love to see some pics in natural sunlight, maybe that's affecting the color

How do you guys like the Sexy new models on the front page of BiG's website?

If the Joe McCoy numbering is anything like the RMC numbering, then the two may be slightly different WW2 models.
In RMC, the 613 is a sort of 47, post WW2 model (with stitched arcs, sail cloth pocket bags, etc.) while the 613a is a WW2 model with painted arcs, camoflauge pocket bags. The 613a is also a bit more relaxed in fit.

Kiya,
I'd love to hear what models you're thinking of bringing over... I've been wanting a pair of the s614 for a while now, they age to such a beautiful blue.
And I'm assuming that you're dealing with RMC Japan and not Toys McCoy, yes?

^ try buttoning up a pair of raw Samurais and see if you don't think those uniqlos are soft in comparison...

Just found this very informative post about the history the McCoy's brand:
http://ethandesu.blogspot.com/2007/09/which-is-real-mccoy.html#links
as many have alluded to on the board, the McCoy's group seem to have splintered into at least three branches:
Real McCoy's Japan
Real McCoy's NZ / The Few
Toys McCoy
Of the three, I believe that only Real McCoy's Japan and Toys McCoy produce denim. I believe Toys McCoy puts stuff out under the name McHill Jeans (i.e. the Jeans posted up there by sbbbjm) while most of the stuff we see on Rakuten are produced by RMC JPN.
Furthermore, I believe that Joe McCoy's was an older company under the imprint that no longer produces jeans.
The post, I found, was very informative. Though I'm still curious as to why Real McCoy jeans seem to be so rare on Rakuten. Are they just in a production lull? Wasn't Selfedge slated to carry them some time in the future?

scooter commute? shit must get real cold during that...

I'd recommend vintage deadstock whenever possible...the styling is classic, the materials are usually better (provided you get a respectable brand), and they can always be had for cheaper

might also be that I spend most of my day sitting in a chair, even when I do get to wear my jeans... my ED-47s that I wore in college (when I had to walk around everywhere) were super contrasty on the thighs
so easy to fade jeans in college... too bad you usually don't have money to buy the good shit :/
