The very short and simple answer to this is that brands like Rick Owens have a larger margin in place for both themselves AND their retailers, plus they spend a bit more on hardware/tags/packaging compared to your average Japanese denim brand. Those three things combined are the reason the prices are so high, without getting into the details of it, there's not much more to it.

This is something I'd love to write a long form article about some day... the idea that Fashion brands are so serious while smaller more classic brands have "fun" or humor built into their collections. From my experience it's the exact opposite. The brands which are very serious about what they do with very little humor involved are the ones which Superdenim cherishes. Where as brands that don't take themselves so seriously when it comes to the brand personality are Fashion brands. Rick Owens is a perfect example of this, where absolutely nothing he does is without a strong sense of humor. It's a ridiculous clothing line run by a guy who finds humor in the most perverse and unexpected places, as he says himself "when the world is on fire the least we can do is laugh at ourselves". I think from a topical level, without any understanding of what the brand is truly about, it's very easy to think that a brand like Rick Owens takes itself so seriously, is all about doom and gloom, etc.. It also doesn't help that Rick is lumped in with dark fashion brands who do take themselves very seriously like MA+, Label Under Construction, Julius, and Viridi-anne.

For somebody who's supposedly been into raw denim for a while I would have though you'd be familiar with how raw denim doesn't drape naturally until it's been rinsed and/or worn for a bit, neither of which has happened in these photographs. Also, things "looking good" is highly subjective as you know. I've been doing this shit for 21 years now and have seen it all.... for every guy looking like a goon wearing Rick Owens there's a guy wearing a heritage fit that looks equally as bad (to me).

Sorry to hear about the accident! Glad to hear you're (mostly) ok. Those can definitely be repaired but with a hole that big it'll be quite noticeable of a repair job. Get them freshly washed and bring them into one of the shops!

STRIKE GOLD WINTER FLANNELS, CHORE COATS, & LOOPWHEELED T-SHIRTS Super soft alpaca and wool blend flannels from Strike Gold have landed. These are made with a low tension weave then brushed on the inside and outside and are made exclusively for Self Edge without chin straps. We also have Strike Gold's first chore coat. These are made of a 15oz Strike Gold original selvedge indigo denim with a slub cotton yarn warp and medium staple weft. Some impressive sewing details and hardware throughout this piece. FINE CREEK HAMPTON HORSEHIDE TYPE III JACKET Black Shinki horsehide Type III jackets from Fine Creek Leathers are finally here. This is Fine Creek’s take on the classic Type III jacket made of a true black Shinki horsehide. This comes in as a classic fit with just a hair of length added to the body. Fine Creek makes some of the most beautiful horsehide jackets we've seen. Using a vegetable tanned Japanese horsehide, which ages in a fairly fast manner, they cut and sew these jackets in their own studio in Tokyo. The quality of stitching is as good as it gets for a leather jacket, and we've not seen many jackets age as well as these do. Depending on the panel they'll use a different type of stitch thread and thread count to achieve puckering in certain areas for added character. Now at all stores in limited numbers.
