  1. Just thought I'd give an update to my sizing saga.

Here's the synopsis of my sz31:

Raw waist was atleast 35, if not larger. My girlfriend told me that they looked big enough for the fat guy at work to wear and I didn't necessarily disagree with her (I've seen this guy...his obesity factor is off the charts). Washed hot and dried on high for 35 minutes. Jeans were slightly damp when dryer was finished (the fly and pockets weren't totally dry). Waist measured 33.5 which was still way too big.

Soaked in very hot water (as hot as my tub would go) for 4 hours last night, changing water frequently to make sure it was hot. They were dry as of this morning and the waist measured 32 inches (16 inches across). I can certainly work with the waist now (have to wear a belt) but the fit is pretty good in the legs. The left leg has twisted quite well too. I'll post pics later tonight.

Total waist shrinkage: 3 inches (if not more)

  2. looking at pete's measurements, my guess is that 29 will be on the riskier side, depending on your build. 30 should be good, especially if he was going to hot wash/hot dry them. 31 will be loose, almost like a XX fit instead of the intended 66 fit, which isn't bad if you like that.

Chicken is right on here. These look quite similar to my "XX" cuts. In fact, there really isn't a problem with the legs, just the waist. My guess is that 29 would be pushing it. 30 is what I could really go for in retrospect. Perhaps not putting any pressure on the waist of my 31s will result in very little stretching?

  3. ^ what's your normal waist size?

in other words, if you got a 31, you should normally be a 33. otherwise, further hot washing and machine drying can only do so much.

I don't know my actual waist measurement, but I can give you reference jeans that should help:

    SDA 101: 31

    SDA 103: 32

    PBJ-005: 32

    Sorahiko: 31

I agree, I'm not going to kill these things trying to get them to my size. This is the first time I've ever put a pair of jeans in the dryer. I'll either wear them with a large waist or just find someone who wants to trade/sell. Somehow I don't think I'll find a trade though since the odds of undershooting one's size seems rather low.

  4. Didn't anyone read the measurements posted on BiG???

The tagged sizes measure about +2 sizes (so a tagged 30 would measure 32 post-soak)

Thats why I got a 29 (so I could get my true waist size aka 31)

I went a step further and tried on the sample at BIG. I tried on the 32 and it was smaller than the 31's that I ended up getting. Now genius boy, tell me what I should do about that?

  5. These things are huge. My size 31 is well....anything but a 31 (after a long hot soak and spin in the dryer). Pre-soak the waist was 34. I'm not sure what they measure now (I'll edit with measurements later after work) but I'd say they are more suitable for a true 33.

Needless to say I'm a little disappointed. Anyone want to trade a 30 for my 31?

  6. I think it would be just too silly to make two different divisions. So please don't.

Wow, no sympathy for people who work in finance (or other formal environments)!

I do agree with you that it would get silly having multiple divisions, but it's gonna take me a long time to get a good dent in these. Maybe Jubei and I can make suits out of the denim, wear them everyday and then see who gets the best wear after a year.

  7. Yeah I'm a Friday + weekend warrior. No weekday nights though. I work too many hours during the week to even change into jeans once I get home. Straight to the shower and bed after work. I'm lucky to have casual Fridays though.

In all honesty, I think it would be totally fair to have a "weekend warrior" category. I am not going to be able to keep up with a college kid who beats them into the ground.

  8. I've had a pair of SD-101's for 8 months now and these things are like rocks. I relied of the waist to stretch a little and it has hardly budged. I bought a 30 and could really use a 32 but I've stuck with them anyway. Fading is not happening very fast but whatever. Of the repro's I've had, SDA is the pair that I would pick to last me the longest. There seem to be no weak points, even in the crotch. If you are the type to get bored with plain dark jeans, you'll lose patience. I think people avoid the SD-101 because it they think it won't be modern enough. I've been pleasantly surprised by the fit though. Just a regular fit jean...it's far from a Sugar Cane 1947 repro.

Whereas brands like PBJ and Samurai can excite you from the get go, SDA feels more like a brand for people who have "been there done that".

If you ever browse their offerings, SDA makes some hideous jeans outside of the 101/102/103/105 line.

  9. oops, i had no idea they released them. apparently, bears/eternal stopped making many of the sizes for kuma. but people kept on requesting the "XX" cuts with 811 denim. so they decided to release these.

from the measurements, the proportions seem very similar, but the sizing seem different.

I ordered a pair of 874's so we'll see how they work out. If they don't work out, they'll definitely show up in the Supermarket forum

  10. Can someone break down all of the Eternal fits for me? I have tried on the 811 and the 872 at BIG but I am looking for a regular fit (looser than 811) in the same denim as the 811. I have looked on Hinoya/Bears and can figure it out different models well enough, but does anyone have personal experience with anything other than 811 and 872?

It looks like I'm gonna have to proxy order something from Japan, but Eternal's sizing isn't that easy to figure out...
