  1. haha, does anyone stick up for curry? There's gotta be a message board somewhere with people discussing the merits of curry.

My best use of curry ever was when I was stuck in Sakae (Nagoya) in the middle of the night, hungry with no money in my pocket. I went to some place that gives you your meal for free if you put down 2 kg of curry. So I got myself a seat and handled my business.

  2. but were you the same guy who said sapporo east was good?

For their Curry! But then again, I don't eat curry too often. Plus, Sapporo East is a restaurant that should be taken with a grain of salt. For the dirt cheap price, what they offer is decent. If someone was looking for a good restaurant, I wouldn't send them to Sapporo East.

Sobaya is a good restaurant (my first comment that it sucks is just reactionary) but I don't believe it to be nearly as good as the others mentioned.

Edit: and for the record I would recommend Sobaya long before I'd recommend Sapporo East.

  3. belated, but another yay for sobaya. the soba itself has been hit-or-miss with me, because they sometimes undercook the noodles -- they leave it way too hard.

but otherwise, all their food and side dishes are legit -- you can taste good dashi.

and some of them can mix a nice calpis soda for you too.

    and yay for japanese pastries.

Sobaya sucks, sorry guys. No comparison to Soba Koh, Sakagura or the late great Honmura An.

Used to be a regular at Sobaya circa 2002 but it's gotten quite bad in recent years, catering to more american tastes (or Chinese? there are tons of Chinese patrons these days). I haven't seen Japanese patrons there in years...

  4. ^ yup. and the nagasaki (kyushu) style is chanpon, where it's that tonkotsu broth filled will all sorts of random shit -- like meat, seafood and veggies.

petey, i don't think you'll get insightful answers for your questions here, because japanese dudes don't cook, especially that hard core. we're all spoiled by our women. :P

I see your point here. But who said I'll be using it? My girlfriend will likely be the one cooking, but I'm taking charge of actually getting the appliance. Maybe I'll head out to Mitsuwa to pick one up.

  5. Very nice boots..but not all of them would be considered desert boots.

Desert boots are made a matte leather (Like suede, nubuck or other non-leather materials) that are cut Iike a chukka boot. The reason is that the desert environment would show more wear on a leather chukka then on a suede chukka and people used to prefer the lighter suede boot while out on the sand or on safari...Its a summer boot....Traditionally, if the leather is shiny, its a chukka boot. If its not, its likely a desert chukka boot....there are some exceptions of course.

I think you're a bit off here (if not totally wrong). They are called Desert Boots because British soldiers wore them in the desert during World War II. Desert Boots are unlined, and have crepe soles and are usually made of suede. Being made of suede is not a qualifying factor though. Plenty of Chukka boots are made of suede and they are definitely not considered desert boots. Chukka boots will have leather soles or Dainite rubber soles. Most of the boots in this thread thus far are Chukka's, not desert boots.

  6. u talking about real life or supertalk.

and i can vouch for this actually. a lot of people i know (asians) hate many many peoples (not talking about race). always talking about shit and putting the word drama in it like its laguna beach or something. my friend actually dissed me because i don't have enemies.

Haha, same thing happens to me all the time. I have some Asian friends that are always asking me why I'm such a nice guy and why I'm so easy going (whereas none of my other friends do this). WTF? Also, I've had Asian friends' families start rumors about me for no apparent reason. Completely crazy shit like I lied about how good my job is or I was with some trashy women. It's like a pastime or something. I don't think the behavior is exclusive to Asian culture though, I think it's just coincidence. Strangely though, I've never gotten any vibe like this from Japanese...who knows, I'm not gonna analyze it.

  7. Guys, I'm not an idiot, I've looked in all those places. Any cookware at JASMart and Sunrise is severely overpriced if they do have anything at all. Also, I have no idea if what they're carrying is of decent quality relative to what else is available in Jersey or online.

Thanks for that website. That thing you posted was a grill though, not a broiler. You know what I'm talking about right? I had one when I lived in Japan. There's always a small, narrow fish broiler in a Japanese oven but I also had a small one that I could put on the countertop.

Edit: this is more what I'm talking about: http://www.fujisan.com/online/eshopping~se~?navi=1105475

  8. Cross Posted from the Ask an Asian Thread (thought it would stand a chance of getting answered here):

Help needed from the Nihonjin dudes in here who cook:

Which fish broiler should I buy and where the hell can I get one? I'm in NYC and the only place I haven't looked is Mitsuwa in NJ. My guess is that they might have something, but I have no idea if it will be any good. I could probably proxy something from Japan but I'm using that as a last resort. Any internet sources?

  10. is that the katsu-curry joint?

i was reading japion and saw an ad for a katsu-curry place....

Yeah this is the place I'm talking about. Plenty of places serve katsu curry (of which I've found Sapporo East to be the best, but it's not that good) but Go-Go Curry specializes in curry. I think this place is next on my list of crappy food to try.

  11. menkuitei is not bad. it's definitely not good.

Of all the crappy ramen in NYC, I think that Menkuitei ranks fairly high up. So it's like being a starter on the JV team.

Next question: anyone ever try that curry place that opened in the west 30's? I remember seeing ads for it but I haven't checked it out.

  12. superramenconfession:

i often went to cafe duke's on 51st bet 6th and 7th for korean ramen. the noodle was completely instant. but i liked it for what it was. reminded me of college and home a bit.

haha, I may have been in line with you! My office moved though and now I'm only a block from Menkuitei and Menchankotei so if I'm really jonesing for some ramen, I just go there.

On a related noodle note, who's got the best Kistune Udon ?

  13. yeah setagaya sucks. so disappointed.

i hope ippudo is going to be run and operated by japanese people. there is no good ramen in new york. there i said it.

I've given up on ramen in NYC too. I've been going to Soba Koh and Uminoie a lot recently. The akamiso at Uminoie is damn good.

  14. Completely agree, I bought my true waist size in 103's and they have streched out perfectly, I think that I could have even sized down one and been fine. Just need a little time to break them in, after that they are tough to hang up.

I had the opposite experience with my SD-101's. I hot soaked my size 30 (my true waist) for 2 hours and it came out very tight. It was a definite struggle to get all the buttons done. I wore them for 6 month and they hardly stretched. They were starting to smell at 6 months so I cold washed them without detergent. The waist shrunk even more and now I can't wear them. They are just sitting in my drawer. Now that I think about it, I should've sold them by now.

  15. The uniqlo wool pants are not heavy compared to real flannel trousers. Your jeans will keep you just as warm. I don't mean to burst your bubble, but for real flannel trousers, you're gonna need to increase your budget to at least $150. Try ebay or what about looking at a store like J.Crew? They probably sell flannel trousers and they are probably on sale for ~$100.

If you really can't go above $50, you should just wear your jeans and some Underarmour tights.

  16. Goods/Services in the UK are generally more expensive than in the US. Example:

The same Air Max sneakers are 109 GBP in a london Footlocker and $139 in an American Footlocker. Now once you convert the currencies, you are not paying the same price. This happens for many goods/services. The discrepancy is huge between the UK and the US. Step up your game.

  17. Oh my god I am SO mad too you guys.

My torso is too long for most jean jackets but I finally figured out how to deal with it. Don't buy jean jackets. If you've got long arms, just go for a fashionable motorcycle jacket. Most of them have longer arms to accommodate for when you reach for the handle bars.

  18. I don't think there are enough Japanese actors/actresses with the English language chops to make a Hollywood movie... they can make crappy movies with all-HK casts and understandable English anytime....

When is the last time you saw an American made movie about Japan that didn't patronize Japanese people or mock their accents?

Letters from Iwojima for the win!

  19. hmmm that would make sense.

for full disclosure, i should be getting some of this stuff to review... ill say more about it once i get the clothes. i also may do some promotion for them if i like the product. take from that what you will.

Didn't want to blow your spot but given your connection to Evisu in the past year, I thought this might be a possibility.
