  1. How long do sold out items remain sold out?  I mean do they eventually come back?

That's usually pretty final for the clothing side of things, unless they get re-issued/updated for the next season. The bags come and go. The 12TS was launched about a year ago (IIRC) and hasn't been seen until just now.

  2. SuE: And don't forget the T-shirts!

My guess is their web-store has turned out to be pretty effective. That makes it possible to do stuff like this more easily, as opposed to trying to do that through dealers, who would normally order about a year in advance. Also it seems that 3A is pretty much exclusive to the web-store now, so that too is basically divorced from the bi-yearly cycle.

Japanese brands do this all time; releasing pieces every couple of weeks, throughout the year. No idea though if that generally makes things easier to plan (more even production throughout the year?), more financially stable (smaller batches, less capital held up in fabric, production and inventory perhaps), more exciting (well for us, certainly) or more profitable (people pounce on these surprises more readily perhaps).

Whether ACR goes all the way there or not (I'd say they're not), right now these releases keep interest going throughout the year.

    Either way, it's fun :).

  3. Good overview readytoignite.

See your point with Veilance. Its well made but I'd never pick one of their jackets over an ACR or even SISP. Too much "gray man" for me. Their LS and SS shirts and the Blazer LT are really great though. If you're unsure of the DS-J5, try finding the Blazer LT (not the windshell one!). It's really nice and meshes with everything from more traditional stuff with jeans to tech stuff like ACR and SISP. One of my go-to pieces. And if you ever change your mind on the DS-J5 and its medium, I'll really make it worth your while.   :)

  4. Hi Brainboy,

Maybe you misunderstand: I was asking my question in relation to an imagined brand with styling, fit and quality like ACR. It was a follow up to the "Can you get something even remotely similar elsewhere?" question. If you answered yes, then chances are that this imagined brand would likely be made in a sweatshop somewhere in Asia, rather than in a factory in C.R. where people are paid a reasonable wage like ACR is.

    Sorry for the confusion.

  5. Hi Shadows,

Thoughtful post, thanks! Not sure we disagree all that much.

I started on ACR around 2010 so for me fit-wise things have always been good. Someone new looking to get in to it, would get something that has a great fit. Haven't had problems with XPac myself but I agree on the Epic and it seems so does ACR, as they moved over to heavyweight Stotz altogether it seems.

I love SISP and Veilance but have never seen Herno Laminar in person. SISP and Veilance are of course in the same bracket but to me their aesthetics are very different. SISP is clearly more experimental in terms of materials, and as a result, not as "clean". Veilance is ultra-clean, much more urban and blends better with more traditional wear than ACR's more prominent military look does.

From the looks of it Laminar is the most traditional and mainly just shares the technical fabrics and of course the designer :).

They are all "compatible", yes or as Errolson might say "different parts of the same house" (that was SISP vs. ACR btw). But still different enough that you cannot really replace the one with the other IMHO. But you are right that my "even remotely close" was a bit over the top.

Forgot about Tilak, but that too seems to have been more so in the past, than today. Today's Stinger (as seen on the Tilak homepage) seems like a very different jacket than the GT-J20 was. Ditto for the Ogre (check out the difference in the back for instance)

No doubt both are good quality jackets but very different aesthetics.

Again, unless you're buying dead-stock or 2nd hand, a new ACR buyer would get a piece that is well made, has a great fit and is pretty unique.

Since we're fans, I agree that we have a tendency to get carried away. That said though, we're not rubes that are getting fleeced by a greedy mega-corp based out of Germany either. Or are we....?

  6. To elaborate on Flipflop's point:

Is ACR some of the most well made fashion around? - Yes.

Does it fit exceptionally well? - Yes.

Does it look totally bad-ass? - Yes.

Can you get anything even remotely approaching it anywhere else? - Not really.

Made by people earning a real wage? - Not bloody likely.

    For less money? - No.

Is that level of fit, finish, looks and/or brand-ethos important to you? - You decide.

If you answer yes to that last question, you're kind of on the hook for paying the price.

What I'm guessing you're really asking is "Is it overpriced for what you get?". See above.

  7. Wow that's scary close. Makes me wonder if there is an ACR rip-off mafia underground somewhere. First Gucci, now this. What's next, Valentino releasing a camo version of the DS-J5?

  8. Had my P9TS-X on today and those worked ok-ish for about 24c. I also just got my P11s and will try them tomorrow. Should get to be around 26c or so. I can confirm though that the P9S works down for those kinds of temperatures. Much more breathable than Epic, to be sure.

  9. a P12 pant? suppose it is a subnet thing or I've missed something...

I'm assuming Shadows means a full-length version of the SP12-CH or S featuring all of the cargo-style pockets and webbing. Interesting idea, though I happen to like the clean look better myself.

Also, re: price...the P11 seems simpler in its construction, beyond just the pockets. Look at the seams for example, especially at the knees. That might make it faster and cheaper to construct. This is a really nice price for a pair of ACR pants IMHO. Ordered a pair and we'll see what the fit is like. Will report back :)

  10. Zeusneckone: I did that for a while but didn't like it. Specifically it was a Retina MBP so can't speak for "full height" laptops, but basically it fit.

The problem is that it ends up pushing out the edges of the bag which seriously flattens it. The result is that you cannot fit much else in the bag besides the laptop. With a 13" laptop (as discussed elsewhere at length :) ) the bag just keeps accepting stuff without breaking a sweat. With the 15" you'll have a hard time cramming stuff in right away.

  11. The material is really slick and durable. It's white so that you can see the contents better when you open the bag. If your bag has a dark interior things (esp. smaller items) tend to get lost, at least that's my experience.

  12. To riff a little more on CmdR's answer:

All three could be your every day bag, depending on your needs. However, if you get more than one, the 8TS is the bag you should get because you need it for daily use. If the size works for you and/or you carry a 13" laptop most days, it's the thing to get, no question.

Personally though I doubt you'd end up using the 8TS as a "sometimes" bag, alongside a daily-use 5TS for example. If your daily load needs a 5TS, I'd stick with a 3A-1 on the side for those lighter days (fx. day-trips, light shopping, and if you have kids: a diaper-bag...not kidding). It'll also roll up and fit into the 5TS, which might be smart.

If your daily load is light and fits the 3A-1 (no laptop, maybe just an iPad or something), the 5TS might be smarter "on the side" as it'll fit pretty much whatever you throw at it, when you need the space. YMMV.

  13. 3A-8TS is my constant companion. I wear my P9-Ses in either color probably 70% of the time. They are as close to an ideal pant as it gets for me. On the jacket front it is harder. On colder days, the SS-J25, otherwise the new J3B. J27PL when the weather is uncertain; combined with the J25 if needed. But then I love my J29, J23, J18, etc. too...
