  1. Honest question for you Ed:

What made you opening a denim store in this day and age?

The competition from the online shops was already strong; shops like Denimio and OD were already operating when you opened Signet.

Same reason SE has expanded to multiple stores, and other new shops have joined the fray in the US.  You have a shop in an area with a large enough population and foot traffic, you'll make up for sales lost to online only stores.

  2. Yep! If you're into your jeans looking like they are literally a vintage pair then warehouse is an awesome option. It's just that that look doesn't appeal to me.

I think what you're seeing (and disliking) is the results of a certain type of wash and wear cycle, rather than a product of the denim itself. Most guys who wear Warehouse are drawn to a vintage aesthetic, and treat their jeans accordingly.  If someone wanted a produce a high contrast, modern aesthetic, wouldn't require much outta the 1000XX denim.

  3. It's not rocket science.  If you go into a store and try something on and like it, or you pester that store online or via email with questions about a product, you buy from them.  If you know what you want through online research and comparison, buy from whomever you're comfortable doing business with.

Every business faces competition from online vendors, no reason premium denim will be any different.  That's why (at least in the US) those that open store fronts to sell premium denim do so in areas with hundreds of thousands to millions of potential customers within a 30 mile circle of them to draw from.  If you can't run a niche business in a market of that size, it's time to rethink your business model or the product you're selling.

  4. Hit 300 days of wear yesterday with the 1001s, and gave them a wash this afternoon. Couple observations.... this was the 8th time they've been washed, and I'll wait for them to dry completely, but a couple quick measurements and it looks like there was a little more shrinking going on. And while there isn't much difference in weight between the 1000 and 1001 denim, the latter doesn't hold up as well to wear and tear. I have several spots that are wearing through sooner than I think they should. I prefer the way the 1001 fades, but the 1000 denim is a better choice for long term wear.

  5. Yeah, they're WWII details on a slim, more modern cut. Nothing like a real Lee cut from the 40s.

Alvin, you're welcome. I should mention difference in the rear rise of the two models is about an inch smaller in the 1002.

  6. They're both a size 36. Raw they were both in the 38 to 38.5" range at the waist, so that's size up 1" for me. Other than waist, the 1002 is 1/4 to 1/2" smaller than the 1001 at the various points of measure.

  7. Thanks Chris!

Some close ups of damage to be fixed next week.  Need crotch, yoke, wallet fade, and pocket openings repaired, then I should be good to go for the remainder of the contest.

  8. Great fit Max.  You and I are on the same wave length lately.  You've bought, or mentioned thinking about buying, the same models I'm considering down seven or eight months down the road.

  9. Thanks!

Learned my lesson with the LVC '55s for the LVC contest, they're borderline too worn to wear.  Goal is 450 days of wear with these come the end of the DWC.  Want something nicely worn, but still wearable, and still fits.  All my well worn jeans (55s, 66s, 1001XX, 700) are a size too big.

  10. I love my 3012's, but I do agree it's an odd/unique fitting pair of jeans (definitely a bit of a nut crusher at times).

Glad I haven't given them a shot.  I've been interested in FH since I first came to sufu, but it seems like all their models don't have enough rise.  From SE's measurements, I thought the 3012 might be something that could work for me.

  11. Also, brands do fall in and out of favor, but I wouldn't be surprised if the current interest stayed toward the current brands. It seems like the most experienced members are interested in brands like WH, FC, etc, and I can't see a random swing to flat head, it just doesn't make sense.

It all goes in cycles.  Just about every brand has had some higher than average level of interest here at some point.

The current situation is pretty simple.... most of the active posters here are older guys (30 and up) that like a regular fitting jean.  The brands you mentioned offer that.  Flat Head, other than a couple models like the 3009 and 3012, doesn't.

  12. Pretty good example of how the 1001 fades. My 1001 are pretty close to these 1001SXX in color, though my jeans aren't quite as heavily fade on the front (give 'em a couple more months).

Over the weekend I was comparing my 1001 to my old 1001XX 15th.  The 1001 denim definitely holds onto a blue cast in the worn areas, making it a bit tougher to produce strong contrast.  Closing on wear number 300 for my 1001, and nearly 50 days of wear since their last wash.  Will interesting to see what color the next wash reveals in a couple weeks.
