  1. Excuse the bad gash on the toe. I do wear these M-F since december.

Bates 922 with full color reflection in the shine and hardly any visible pores (I get too bored to finish them sometimes). Enjoy.

I don't see the gash, but maybe it's jus the glare from the super shine. Before we switched from black boots to desert boots in the Marines, I used to spit shine my boots like it was no ones business. Whenever I got a gash, I'd apply enough crazy glue to lay the leather back down nice and flat then give it a light sanding with a fine grit then apply more polish/spit shine.

You want to get rid of the old layers of polish first, though by using shaving cream and steel wool. Once that's all stripped, let dry and apply polish and buff. I'd then start spit shining the entire boot. I would only do the toes when I was feeling lazy. It would take at least five coats before I started getting a decent shine. After that, they got only one layer of shine after work in perparation for the next day. I would do this for a few weeks/month before stripping them and starting over...or when the polish started to flake really bad.

    Oh the good ol' days...

  2. Found this sign in an old, closed down shoe repair shop in downtown Baltimore. Makes me wish I had been here 5 years earlier.

I guess this brings up a question - do you need to send off to Japan to get a Takeshi-San style resole or are there competent cobblers in and around that can handle a resole on a pair of boots? Right now I've got 5 pairs of boots in need of a resole, and I can't afford all 5 of them being 250 bucks or more.

Nice photo. I snapped this one in Alameda, CA right after my return from Afghanistan back in March/April. It was a super small shop.

I've featured quite a few Cobblers on my blog with corresponding photos, to include the Tulsa shop. I don't think you can go wrong with any one of them. Just type in "cobbler" in the search bar in the right side.

I just received an e-mail the other day from Takeshi announcing the arrival of a pair of my Engineers.

  3. Sounds like the makings of a good looking pair o' boots.

I don't think you have to worry about too much shine on the black tie.

You may have seen this already...

Top row (both photos): Burgundy, Black Tie, Bright Red, Burlap Explorer

Bottom Row: Black, Brown, Redwood, BKF silicon tanned Black Fire resist

This photo minimizes reflections to show the color although the Burgundy and Black Tie samples still show a bit of sparkle from their surface texture.

This photo is taken at an angle to illustrate the amount of shine each leather exhibits.

  4. ^ I bought my RC's when I returned from Afghanistan as I had a gut feeling the group buy was either going to take a while or not materialize at all. I really tried to hold off as long as possible, but you gotta go with your gut. I'm glad I did.

    My size 7 1/2 RC's fit perfect and I wear an 8D.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

  5. I recently picked up these vintage deadstock Red Wings on ebay. Great condition other than being slightly smushed from being in the box for years, and the little leather heel insert is peeling up at the edges a bit. I wish I knew when they were from, but I haven't a clue how to date them

More for Engineer boots, but here's a little insight on labels

  6. ^ I've been to combat three times already and am gearing up for another round. My problem has always been bringing too big a pack, which makes me bring too much in my carry on. Now that I am familiar with leather crafting I'd like to perhaps make a carry on bag like yours that will fit the bare essentials with their own compartments/pockets, etc.

Beside just purchasing a heavyweight leather (how heavy?), are there liners or support products I need to buy?

Any info would be super helpful and appreciated.

    Cheers!!!

  7. Made another wallet this weekend. I was a bit reluctant with making my first zip pouch, but it was super easy. I just want to get to a point (soon) where I can drop this veg-tanned leather and use the good stuff.

Spider web studding is way off, but I know what to do next time. Also, the part where you stitch the center of the lining? Yeah...I know now not to make that the last part - it's impossible to sew at the end. I just ended up cutting it out.

All in all, I'm somewhat happy with the outcome. I wanna try and work on my edging on the next wallet.
