  1. ^damn, andrew! you're right about setting a high standard. those are looking great!

    i love seeing everyone's mods.

stryker came by the shop with his modded pair on saturday. so dope. SO DOPE. mod-game stepped up by him big time. he should be posting about them soon.

    suspense...

If you leaked my mod and he did it, you owe me free pho phoever.

  2. I don't know if I should soak these Heavy Nep jeans before I wear them, or just wear them. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

My advice is unorthodox but you can trust me.  I would hot soak them and then dry the living piss out of them to remove all shrinkage.  I've had significant shrinkage with anything and everything I've ever owned, raw or sanforized.

I believe it was foxy2 who made an interesting point in another thread about fungicides and anti-mold agents in textiles in the market.  At minimum, a soak to remove these chemicals would not be unwise.  LF might be able to shed some light on the fabrics used and to what extent such agents are used.

  3. Machine washing...it kills me watching all that dye swirl down the drain.  I do machine dry unsanforized like a muthafucka though.  Hot soak in the tub and machine dry inside out, 2-3 times again and again just whatever lol.  That will shrinkydink them down as well.  Just give them a final hot soak with hang dry to remove dryer wrinkling and crisp em up a bit.

  4. If y'all ever do un-sanforized, please put the actual size on the label instead of the size that it will (might) shrink to. Because they never shrink the amount that they say they will. Too many variables.

Key words in bold.  The best thing you can do is a little research on seasons or lots and shoot for a ballpark.  Hell, if it's ballpark it will more or less work in my experience.

I just picked up an unsanforized pair -- happybabyyoga you'll be happy to hear I have something else to wear haha.  After my admittedly intense and against-the-grain shrinking methods I'm damn near 4 inches down in the waist alone.

LF, is this mess of variables why you don't do unsanforized?  Goominim does make a valid point that within a lot from the same bolt you can expect +/- similar results.  But there again..."+/- similar"...it's just a different game.

  5. No problem oe1, lmk if you need more hosting.

I took these of overexposed1 the other day.  We've been working on the craziest open stairs together and here he is routing out some pockets.

  6. I have the biggest lump in my throat right now.   I don't want to talk about it anymore, let's get back to LF business but thank you so much.  When you beat down a pair that hard and constantly fix her up, it's like you stitch a part of yourself into them.

I can't wait to see the 23oz in person.  Satchel, do you already have them?  I forgot to ask about that last night and you had so much going on with the customers.

  7. Wow, thanks everybody.  Lots of badass pairs from this group.  I'm glad the hard wear and hand mending ethos still has relevance.  Even if I didn't pull ahead I would feel glad about seeing a portion of votes going to such a pair as these.  Busting em down and then fixing them is something I deeply love doing and I love seeing others do it as well.

Thanks for everything Flash and I agree it would be awesome to push the contest another year even.  But I'd have to opt in as an observer only because these jeans are way past retirement!

  8. @jyoni do you have to work so hard (in your sweats!)?

Tradesmen in sweats are hilarious.  I have become one because of this contest.  Difference is...these sweats are dope.

The inspector was by the other day to check out the load bearing points on those huge stair pieces.  I wore jeans for that meeting ;)

  9. thanks!  hope the wash goes well.  i'm trying to hold out until april 1 for a wash a month, but feel like they're due now

and you're considering power tools in a major us city?  very jealous.  wish that was possible in ny.    :P

It's bad here too.  Another carpenter and myself have lost a couple grand's worth of stuff to theft.  One incident was very bold, while we were there on site.

@jyoni haha I was for sure just kidding. I got some fun activities planned for them and if it keeps staying this cold I should have plenty of time wearing them for the fades! How’s the festool stuff? I’ve only looked at any of it briefly, worth spending the extra dough for a hobbyist?

Festool is the best available for a track saw.  If you're already thinking of spending the money on a Makita or a Dewalt, then I would say absolutely pony up for Festool.  My only real gripe is that the soft-start is very rough on both the 75 and 55.  I don't know if the new 55req addresses this in its upgrades.  For a typical track cut it isn't a big deal, but the soft-start rumble was killing me with the way I had the giant 75 balanced on a rigged-up wedged track for those >45° bevel cuts in the photo.  They are very versatile saws.  The Festool will give you the least trouble hugging the track properly.

The other stuff is definitely good, with lots of cool features.  I'd have a hard time forking the extra dough over for most of it.  However the 420 Carvex, now that is quite a tool.  The strobe light makes it look like the dust is just frozen in place, perfect visibility to the line, and the pendulum stroke holds a fantastic cut.  Also, the miter saw has really, really good dust management.

  10. In fact that gives me an idea. Perhaps the next Superman should have an indigo-dyed costume. Imagine the fades the Man of Steel could produce with his lifestyle! The designer and manufacturer? Metropolis's very own Left Field of course...

Even the villains would be pretty cool in such a world.  They'd have cool names...like Dyejob, Slub, Doctor Denim, etc.

    :laugh2:

  11. Susan, I like the work.  I must say I did also like the light stack you had going.  But they look good.

And hey folks, I can't accept that outlook.  No way!  Don't worry about my fades.  There are way too many types of fades, plus many different tastes in fades.  I can't tell you how envious I am of other people's fades.  My laps always outpace everything else in anything I wear and I really wish my wear was more even.

  12. Took some pics of my old 4403.   I'm not a dwarf, these are just super huge haha.  I ordered too large in the first place then lost a bunch of weight, so they're pretty much unwearable at the moment :(

I can't recall how long I have on these.  I have updated them in this thread...8 or 9 months maybe?

  13. Theeeere's ignaurus.  Baby's looking good man!

Satchel, you're right, any and all of these denim contests would be so much better if the distances between people weren't so great.  Seeing all the pairs in person would be awesome.

hoggreaser, I forgot to upload for you but I have those pics :D   I'll post them in the main thread.  I took them while sorting out my final contest shots, so similar presentation.

  14. Satchel you foo  I told you no big-head pics, ever...you know how unphotogenic I am.  Thanks for taking em buddy I'm glad people like them.  I'll still get some posed fits up once my pumps arrive.

More from earlier that day (sans Madden big-head mode)

  15. great to know re inseam shrinkage.... I need some shrinkage!  did you wash on hot too?

No, I soaked them inside-out in cool water for a little while, then they went into the dryer sopping wet with a few towels.

Satchel mentioned your tinyness when I was trying to snag your pair -- I'm sure you'd be happy with the results of dryer shrinking.  The whole block actually shrank quite a bit on mine.  I didn't mention that because the material has very easy stretch so the inseam length was the only major issue there.

Be careful with drying them on hot because of the elastic in them!  It's a risky thing.  I wouldn't run them past damp on hot.  At that point you may even want to just finish with a hang dry rather than lower heat...and never machine dry them again.  Once the initial shrinkage is out, there is no reason to do anything beyond hang drying imo.
