  1. g-drifter: well i figured it was safe to talk about here because more of us than not were not content with the atwoods. and as far as headporter -- theyre expensive, not extremely durable and not designed for edc.. but they are cool, imo. w/e.

u mad: i can change it but on tumblr, "EDC" means electric daisy carnival, cuz everyone on tumblr is some indie artsy rave fag

soonami if you get use out of yours, more power to you. i just don't drink and if i did drink, and if i had friends, and if i did drink in front of those aforementioned hypothetical friends, they would probably just make fun of me for using an atwood to open a beer. that's because even in my imagination i have low self esteem.

chris_n: but moonmode (0.2 lm) is like a cell phone glow but in a beam pattern that can actually throw! so cool. :)

Hating on Atwoods is like hating on any luxury brands. The reasons to buy one are exactly the same; exclusivity, looks, materials, manufacturing methods, brand name, etc. Not utility. Just like your cricket probably does the exact same thing as your leafstorm, except the later costs triple the price.

If someone wants a nice bottle opener and doesn't mind paying 70$ for one that most other people won't have, I don't see a problem here. I'm perfectly content with mine and def won't resell it, but I certainly wouldn't buy a second one.

On another note, I got lots of new stuff lately, gonna post a big update on the weekend when I have my camera :)

  2. hey guys, I'd like to get my first fixie this spring and someone I know recommended me a surly steamroller. Any of you had experience with one? Any other recommendations in the same price range? thanks

tried searching the thread but nothing really came up

  3. i am looking for an outdoors/hiking/camping fixed blade knife. i am in love with the strider db in form and overall design, i just cant swing that much money. I know it isnt REALLY an EDC but could you guys help me out with finding something similar?

Get a Snody shank, best bang for the buck out there. Got mine few weeks back, just need to press a kydex sheath for it before it can be my official hiking tool

  4. Hey guys, here are some pics I'd like to get opinions on. No they aren't mine, they were all taken by my father.

The thing is, he spends all of his time travelling or in his dark room and never really get time to display his work outside of our house nor does he use internet a lot. I admire his work and he is a true inspiration for me, but I realize there could be a bias, hence why I'd like some comments and opinions from you guys.

Those samples are all scans from a trip to Shanghai and a trip to Vietnam. The square photos were taken with a Mamiya 6MF and the pano were taken with a Noblex.

    Thanks!

  5. Alright, finally received my higo so here are some pics and thoughts as promised.

The knife is actually a handmade custom or semi-custom (depending on your definition) from japanese master Ichiro Hattori. This is the short version, with a blade barely over 2 inches. The markings on the handle also have an actual meaning; the signature of the maker

    DSC_0041.jpg

Unlike lots of higonokami, this one ain't some cheap, mass produced knife. 60 layers of stainless steel and nickel on each side are used to produce Hattori's famous 121 layer damascus and help protect the Cowry-x core, a steel in the same league as ZDP-189 and widely considered superior to VG10, S30V, etc. The edge is zero ground, meaning the sharpness is unrivalled.

    DSC_0043.jpg

I remember someone stating that an higo would be a bad EDC choice as it could open in your pocket on its own, but this one is extremely tight and requires a great amount of pressure to open. The silk wrap can also be used to secure the blade in place if you're really that worried about it.

I realize that an higonokami is meant to be a cheap beater, but like many other people on sufu, I appreciate high craftsmanship and attention to details, so this was only logical choice for me.

Now I doubt I'll be spending any more money on production knives after seeing what guys like Snody and Hattori can do

  6. killzone.ca has the dragonfly for $80 CAN...ridiculous

anyone know of any dealers that will ship to canada without having to spend at least $100?

Getting knives in Canada is a pain dude. Some dealers like knifeworks or knifecenter will ship to canada, but with fees of 25-30usd, so unless you order a lot it's not worth it.

Your best bet is a us proxy or ebay.

  7. Yea, I just leave my Sharbo between.

Any of you knife dudes got insight on a good chefs knife? Sick of these fugazi knives I've been using; like trying to cut a pork loin with a brick. Been looking at some Santoku's and not sure where to throw my money.

Ordering one of those higonokami from Kiosk, good looks ML.

Not sure this is EDC material, but... bought a Shun for my mum and it's way, way sharper than any of her german steel. It's actually sharp enough that you don't need to pierce a tomato's skin first to get a good cut. Supposedly this is due to the sharpening angle on japanese knives.

I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to kitchen cutlery, but Shuns seems to be good medium quality knives and are reasonably priced. They're also nice to look at.

From what I've heard though, you should avoid Santokus and go for a traditional ~8inch chef knife.

I'll leave it at that as I don't want to derail the thread too much. You can always PM me if you have questions.

any opinion on higonokami? (traditional japanese folder)

really love the look and i was thinking of picking one up.

I see them as the japanese equivalent of Opinel.

    Cheap, sturdy...classic?

I got a damascus one on it's way right now, should get it this week if everything goes well... I'll update once it arrives :)

Here's the other knife I tried to post yesterday that I received along with my Snody. Sorry for poor pic, only have my cellphone with me.

It's the spyderco khukuri, an Ed Schempp design. I think I prefer exotic shapes when it comes to edc knives, and this one really nailed it for me. It had everything I wanted; good steel with full flat grind, olive G10 handles, liner lock and full open back construction. I originally wanted the Lum chinese folder, but I read some complaints about it on the spyderco forums and decided to go for this one.

I'll admit it's quite bigger than I expected, mostly cause I read the "edge lenght" instead of "blade lenght" on the online specs (there's a good unedged chunk as you can see)

The only downside to this knife IMO is the finger notch, which really gets in the way if you try to flick it open, forcing you to open it with a full finger motion, spydey drop or a strong wrist flick. But on the other hand, it provides great ergonomics, allowing you to grip the knife in many different ways.

Overall, a near perfect edc blade for me.

  9. yo wildstyle, I guess this is what you meant by lum shot?

Tried my best to show the effect as accurately as possible. Actually, if you off the lights, you won't see that glow on other surfaces right away, but once your eyes get used to the darkness it's probably even more visible than that.

Still, it gives you a pretty good idea of the overall brightness I think.

  10. Tried to do a vid like one of kenneth's, but my only camera that does video won't take SDHC cards.. Also forgot half of my new stuff in my apartment, so here's pics and thoughts on some of my latest edc purchases

First is a Marathon watch from countycomm. Seriously, this is probably the cheapest watch that I own, but easily my favourite. This is the field watch with date.

    DSC_0015.jpg

I really wish they made it in the automatic version, as I love the "timelessness" idea of an auto, and the SAR models are WAY too big for my tiny wrists. This design is much more simple and understated, and also doesn't look goofy on me. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who's looking for a good, cheap watch that can take a beating and still manage to look cool. I'm literally blown away at how bright those tritium tubes are, glowing to the point of actually shooting a green beam of light on my bedsheets at night.

Next is a custom bail-out knife from Mike Snody.

    DSC_0017.jpg

That thing is sharp as hell, chisel grind definitely makes sense now. Nothing else I own even comes close to this. I was also surprised by how small it is, you don't really get that feeling from looking at most pics, but it's roughly the size of a sog flash 1. Here's a pics showing its relative size in my hand (sup selfedge) and the raw side of the blade.

    DSC_0020.jpg

Really nice knife and fits surprisingly well in my pocket even with the sheath for edc carry. I'm quite happy with the purchase

I'll post the rest of my order when I get back to my apartment later tonight. Also got another custom knife that should arrive by the end of this week.. this is quickly turning into an addiction :o

  11. i don't know what striders you're looking at, but sng is 400... got it for lower... nothing wrong with a used strider, because strider offers you a lifetime warranty with no questions asked, as long as you haven't done any modifications that affects performance.

i used my sng to pry an abalone out its shell. worked great. just an overall beater/tank folder.

i'm not a fan of emersons... my cqc14 had problems with the lock, i sent it back for a fix and received it with the same problem. never had to send my sng back, but i bet it'll come back better than ever. i do love the sweater though.

i have a small sebenza 21 and i love it. i'm hoping to pick up a large plain one. i don't like the inlay designs. i wish it came with flatgrind though.

Concerning the cqc14 lock problems, that's why I mentioned the comrade, cause it has a similar framelock to your Strider..

Anyway, I was just wondering if there was anything particular about that brand (materials, construction, quality control, etc), cause IMO the premium they ask seems a bit hefty for production knives. They're cool, but at those prices, I'm not sure I'd be willing to do anything with one other than look at it :o

On a related note, I just received 2 new knives in the mail :D

I'll try to post a review and pics or a video this weekend when I go back home, I don't have a camera right now.
