  1. Got my Abingtons today. Quality is good, not great. For knocking around the city they're fine but I'd hesitate to use them on a true mountain hike. The boots are very light and need more heft for that application, both in leather thickness and reinforcement throughout the body. The ankle support is fully leather lined. Soles are the Vibram Morflex, very very light. For $180, I'm pleased. If you're interested in them, size down a full size.

  2. hey guys - I'm a long-time lurker to this thread. I've learned tons from you regular dudes about boots and shoes.

I just got some Peal and Co. monk straps off the bay, but my feets are just too wide! they are up in the supermarket, but I thought you gang might want to have a gander:

If it's a close fit I'd recommend taking them to your local cobbler and getting them stretched wider. I had that done on some dress boots and it turned a poor fit into a perfect fit.

  3. canon 20d. done.

Specs look perfectly fine for what I hope to get out of the camera and I love the price. Used 20D here I come. Thanks for all the input guys. The EFS 18-55 lens is included in a lot of the auctions on eBay. That a fine starting/all-purpose lens?

  4. Hmmm! I search for wii, and click the Ebay sponsored hit. Then, once, at ebay, I type in digital rebel xsi. When I search that the cash back icon disappears!

Fortunately, when I search for the digital rebel xsi on live.com, the ebay sponsored hit is there, but that sucks if you're searching for something obscure that live.com will not send to ebay. Damn.

  5. While the 5D Mark II might be a great deal, it's way out of my price range.

You can probably find D80s/D70s cheap given that the D90 just came out, but I'd agree with Boston, good glass is key, it will help you in lowlight situations a ton

Would a used D80 or D70 make more sense than a new (or used for that matter) D40 for a beginner? My only hesitation about the D40 is the lack of the lens internal drive motor. Is that even something to be concerned about? I'm a complete beginner and looking to get into photography as a hobby.

The Canon 450D also looks great.

    Thank you,

    Jacob

  6. I was wondering if you all could give me some advice on picking up a SLR camera. I'm a complete photography newb and I want something decent that won't break the bank. I was looking at the D40 and D60 and I'm wondering if it's a serious problem that those cameras lack the internal drive motor for the lens. What are some comparable cameras (both in terms of quality and price) that do include the drive motor? Finally, what should my noob photo kit include (lenses, bag, SD drive, etc)?

    Thank you!
