  1. Dammit, pretty sure my home PC is on the outs. Windows 7 started freaking out, using 40-50% CPU at "idle." Eventually traced it back to Windows Update Service and that spike quits when you stop the service, but even when trying to install a Linux distro on an unused partition, the system frequently hangs and completely freezes up. I even went so far as to completely reinstall Windows 7 from a fresh slate and the problem still persists. Hard to tell if it's cpu, memory, or motherboard related, but this is an old ass Intel Core 2 Duo from 2008 or so, in a hand-me-down custom made box. Fuuuuuck, all I wanna do is run my media server. Thankfully that all lives on a second HDD that can easily be transferred to a new box. Son of a bitch, time to get with the times I guess

  2. Really? I think this GoT season has been great, non stop action. None of this setup bullshit like previously. Seems like it has strayed from the earlier book adaptation and is basically just David Benioff's version with the dialogue and writing, but still entertaining enough

  3. Finally finished One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, highly recommended.

that was quite the whirlwind ending. Poor Billy Bibbit, that head nurse was a real queen bitch.

Re: book club, seems like Neuromancer has the vote for the first one. My book I'd like to add to the list is All Quiet on the Western Front, have had it for awhile now but with too many other things in the queue ahead to start just yet

  4. Really starting to lose interest in The Americans. It seems like the overall plot has kinda fizzled out and now the show is all about the teenage daughter being a teenager. They were just renewed for the final two seasons but meh

  5. Still only a little more than half way through One Flew Over, keep getting distracted. Really wanna finish it up asap so I can watch the movie, will try to power through this weekend. Anyway, very enjoyable so far, being much funnier than I anticipated.

  6. does anyone else ever secretly hope they get fired?

i'd love to do something new, but i have no idea what. i'm afraid i've reached a point in my current company where i may be subconsciously self-sabotaging everything as an escape mechanism. i'm nearing the 5 year mark this fall, which is a long fucking time at any place. the people are great, and i enjoy helping solve problems, but the overall lack of effort can be infuriating at times.

i should really follow the example of my brother, who said it's always best to apply for new jobs when you're already employed. at least put some feelers out there, maybe even do some interviews just to see if anything sparks your interested.

fucking life, man. always a changing

  7. Android is open, but google play services is anything but

Locking down an open platform such as the mobile web in favor of proprietary plug-ins only serves to further fragmentation and keep people in Google's version of the Internet. These will not work on competing platforms such as iOS or Windows. HTML5 was supposed to be the next big open platform for stuff like this, and everyone loves to shit all over Flash for being a closed sandbox, but hey it's google's world now so it must be good, right? Pass

There's a reason shit like flash, activex, Java, silverlight, etc are going to the way of the dodo. From a software development standpoint it makes more sense to allocate resources to a platform that has the widest user base and access, and not continue giving the keys to the kingdom to the Apple/Microsoft/Googles of the world.

So now, in addition to supporting a mobile website, iOS app, and Android app, there will need to be code developed and maintained for these plug-in experiences. a large amount of "apps" are simply web wrappers anyway, so it seems to me that focusing on that should be the highest priority for developers with limited resources

And all this is even before bringing up the fact that these "instant apps" are inviting new malware vectors into play on your mobile device. Search the news for "flash zero day" to see why this maybe isn't the smartest idea when thinking pragmatically about the platform and use

  8. Android's new Instant Apps revealed at IO today sounds completely retarded. There are very specific reasons why mobile sites are preferred over many apps, but we all know these fuckers are just trying to shoe horn their advertising network into places where it was previously blocked with ease (mobile web)

Thankfully I don't have an android phone because the battery life is shit and they rarely get updates. The 2013 Nexus 7 is to this day still the best android tablet, but their tablet apps are all shit anyway

the only interesting thing coming down the pipeline is the possibility of installing android apps in chrome os

title is highly accurate. just a collection of random writings, no real coherent story throughout. either way, definitely chuckled out loud a few times, short read

another good short read. some of the examples are a bit dated given this was written in 1928, however the overall concepts discussed are still highly valid. essentially views propaganda within the scope of how public relations helps shape opinions.

still only barely just started One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, hoping to make some more progress on it soon.

i'm only just to the point where he is taking bets from the other patients as to whether he can drive the big nurse crazy or not

  10. No, but I do use it for quick peer reviews and general background info for stuff that I might be interested in. Don't really use my Amazon account for much of anything anymore

And yeah, selection at the little libraries can be pretty weak at times. Aside from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the only things I've gotten from there recently is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories and a Louis L'Amour book

  11. Does anyone have Little Free/Public Libraries in their neighborhood? There's a bunch scattered around my area, pretty neat just stopping by and seeing what's new

Just picked up this gem which I've never read or seen the film for yet (keeping with the theme of this thread lol, sup ShakeEmUp) :

Re: the Trump books, Art of the Deal was pretty interesting once you get past his day-to-day stuff in the beginning. Goes over the trials and tribulations of the business world and does a great job describing how even when stuff falters you can make the best of a bad situation. The chapter about the Wollman skating rink in particular provides for a good government vs private industry comparison. Would recommend for just an overall business related read, and a peek into the life of Trump

Crippled America is much shorter, basically just a more in-depth overview of his presidential campaign and where he stands on issues like trade and infrastructure. Wouldn't really recommend for leisurely reading unless it's something you might personally be interested in
