  1. Hmmm. Those are weird. They look like some sort of hybrid Jin / Lee Repro with some more modern features. They look very much LHT, and I agree that they look like a 5000 cut. But they also appear to have hidden rivets, no crotch rivet, and weird arcs that clearly separate them from the Jin repro family. Interesting...

  2. This is a pretty rough mix of transitional structuralist/post structuralist thinkers. What in the hell inspired this combination?

it's interesting as well because at first glance gibson would appear to be the orange among apples. but upon further consideration...

  3. What I heard was but the melody of children at play, nothing but that, and so limpid was the air that within this vapor of blended voices, majestic and minute, remote and magically near, frank and divinely enigmatic--one could hear now and then, as if released, an almost articulate spurt of vivid laughter, or the crack of a bat, or the clatter of a toy wagon, but it was all really too far for the eye to distinguish any movement in the lightly etches streets. I stood listening to that musical vibration from my lofty slope, to those flashes of separate cries with a kind of demure murmur for background, and then I knew that the hopelessly poignant thing was not Lolita's absence from my side, but the absence of her from that concord.

So dope. That's going into one of my notebooks.

  4. why the chiding tone doc?

actually i've been paying plenty of attention, and it's precisely why i "intervened" when i did. i didn't post in the spirit of a moderator--i'm all for rollicking threads that surface latent connections between ideas.

but while you like where we've strayed, i'm not feeling it anymore--and i laid out a few reasons why (albeit somewhat opaquely). different strokes i guess...

  5. Finally dudes are starting to talk some sense around here again... The past few pages have been soft and really wandered from the core of what interested me in this thread--the ruggedness, could actually function in the backcountry-ness.

And again, not to diss anybody interested in the BoOxSperry joints, but I'm sorry, I ain't wearing anything Band of Outsiders in the woods (or ocean area) ever--unless my plane goes down over the Canadian Rockies or something. That to me should be a hallmark question of the thread: "could it function in the backcountry?"--not that you have to use it exclusively outdoors, but you COULD if you wanted to. And while we're at it, I like the Albam stuff okay--it's not 100% my thing--but I don't fully get why it belongs here either. Is it because they offer a cotton anorak? Again, this isn't to diss, it's to continue a discussion what people think "belongs"in here. Because it's one thing to say "most outdoor gear is overdesigned." Fine, I agree with that, but I think we're going overboard here a bit in the other direction, including stuff that is in my opinion, nothing but fashion--overpriced and with no functional sensibility about it whatsoever. And there's a whole other category of items we could discuss as well--things that aren't "fashion-first," but that are marketed to an outdoor crowd and actually function VERY well without being overdesigned and look pretty good as well. I'm thinking of designs involving, for example, eVent and Schoeller, two materials/products that (unlike Gore-Tex) really do what they are supposed to do. Just some thoughts from the geecee...

  6. oh shit. the Braxtonese! That's something I never got the hang of either. Dude writes like he came from a planet even further out than Sunny Blount. I need a translating dictionary to parse the syntax.

I was a Braxton student once upon a time. I think I understood his framing and conception of creative music history uncommonly well. He does indeed have his own language. It is opaque and self-referential, but it has an intense internal logic (and to use his parlance, it has an overall vibrational logic). It's also best heard spoken by the man himself--not written.

I really don't get the out-ornetting ornette thing...?

  7. 20 + miles logged this week (including Sunday) and I'm going for a long run tonight at the track to give my knees a rest. I was planning on logging 30 + this week, and if I can pull through the next few days I'll make that easily. It's been a long while since my mileage was that high. If I could stop slamming snickers and twixes that are stored in my office i might actually lose some weight! What's good with the rest of you?

  8. Anybody have any recommendations for a good sweater/clothing chest that won't send me to the poorhouse? I'm looking for something nice looking to store sweaters and sweatshirts in that doesn't look like it belongs in Lord of the Rings. Think modern without the sterility and classic without the dungeons and dragons. Good looking out!

Just got back from my lunch break, during which I auditioned the Monitor Audio RS6. Wow these things are great (especialy for retailing for less than $1000). The sound was incredibly three dimensional and enveloping. I now want them.

A while back I ended up getting the Onkyo A-9555 amp. So far, it's great, but I need a serious speaker upgrade to the old Polk Audio bookshelf speakers I'm using, and I'm thinking the above speakers may fit the bill. I know that poopieboy mentioned the Monitor Audio brand a while back, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned these when gimme gimme was looking for speakers for less than $1000... Any thoughts on these?

Any recommendations for speaker cable and interconnects?

  10. Just came back from a 7.12 mi run according to the calculation provided by http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ (this is an awesome tool which I'm sure some of you are already using, but perhaps helpful to others). Feeling pretty good, but it's hot out there!

Highfructose, I am starting to like the Nimbus. There is much more cushion than I am used to, but after sticking with the Adrenalines for a while, I felt I needed a bit more cushion in the forefoot (all my shoes wear out here first), which is the reason why I went with the Nimbuses after trying on roughly 12 pairs of shoes. I am probably haevier than a lot of you guys though at 175lbs, so take that into account.

  11. i have been vegetarian for over half of my life now

me too, my dude. i've been in this vegetarian game for 16 years now, and i don't think i'll ever quit. as my cooking acumen grows, i've only become more committed (although i remain ideologically laissez-faire). i like the idea of CSAs, but i'm hesitant to commit out of fear that I wouldn't be able to make use of the amount of food they provide each week. maybe i would. but in any case, i've sidestepped this a bit by growing my own vegetables in the summer and fall--something that has been pretty rewarding. my veggie life has also improved dramatically over the past several years thanks to my nascent tofu preparation skillszz. try and get down with some chinese folks to get schooled, le chinois really know how to properly sizzle that fermented soy brick. my last brick cooked like two!

ps 'the state' gets neg rep for blasting a diarrhea fart of retardation in this house
