  1. Does anybody own a Band of Outsiders or Ervell suit and can comment on the quality (things I am looking for is how the fabric feels post-drycleaning, how does the fabric wear (is it light and cool and warm) as well as how much it creases within 2-3 wears. Also, if you could toss in any other feedback you think is important regarding Band of Outsiders or Ervell suits, I'd really appreciate it.

Moreover, I realize the questions about quality depend on the material of the suit, so I will state explicitly, I'm talking about your typical black/navy/charcoal/grey wool suits, not mohair, gabardine, etc any other kind of fabric. Thanks.

band of outsiders suits are very nice, made by martin greenfield in brooklyn who also does the brooks brothers golden fleece suits.

  3. they are getting stuff every week i guess so maybe that is why there wasn't too much stuff when you went. i have seen a lot of great shit there and but it is only about 20-30% less than regular CDG prices. i love seeing the different collections hanging together, really shows how brilliant cdg is especially all the amazing CDG shirts for men.

  4. i would definitely wait a bit and then buy downtown when the prices get really good. i have seen some really good deals and considering how expensive the rest of the city is i think it's only a matter of time before we see the area totally gentrified.

  5. the thing about high fashion is, it shouldn't be treated and worn as fashion. I think a reason why a lot of people seem uncomfortable in high end or avant garde garments is there may be some kind of distinct detachedness between the wearer and the garment when he puts it on, he feels as if it is something which is not naturally him..this might operate on a more subconscious level, or maybe i'm overanalyzing it. I think clothes, regardless of label or price point, should not be fussy or overthought when putting it on. Thom Browne put it best when he said a man should never look like he spent more than 5 minutes getting dressed.

i like this train of thought. i always describe it as "costume fashion". if you're to wear the 3 jacket cdg outfit literally it is a total costume. same for overly styled pieces, the faux tie uniform experiment or 1st collection KVA come to mind. back to cdg with the layeres collection or galliano or whatever - fashion houses create these narratives to give a sense of continuity to a range of clothing, but the individual pieces are just clothes. they've got to be integrated into a personal style or else you're in dior homme hell. i guess at this point it's painfully clear that when people wear the whole hedi slimane getup it's a really expensively hamfisted reference to this scene in london that you certainly aren't part of.

i really love the lanvin collections because lots of the items are neutral but still cool and not demanding you buy pieces to go together. one of my fav labels is cdg evergreen for these same reasons.

  6. this shit just really bugs me because the way raf is presented as a line of sub-par basics is the same thing that is being done to the helmut lang brand right now.

raf was critically lauded for his early collections but they weren't good sellers - maxfield and barneys both dropped and picked him up again a couple times if i remember correctly, same with branquinho. for all the press that cloak got from what i understand they didn't do a very good business either (i remember early cloak being at maxfield at the same time as raf).

so now that he is more famous after getting the gig w/jil sander (and helping prada sell the jil sander brand) and separating his line in two it seems that his own brand image is really diluted. with the raf collection it seems like other people rehashing designs from his now-classic collections and with his own mainline i feel like i only ever see bland stereotypically "avant-garde" black stuff along with a bunch of button downs rather than a saleable translation of the collection's theme. (maybe it's because i haven't been to seven in a while)

i keep wondering why it's so hard for 78 to find that split t-shirt he's looking for. most companies are begging for customers like him.

  7. Yea, it was either that, or Jil Sander. We'll see how that works out....Jil might've been a better bet (probably even more so if they dropped Raf).

it would be great to see a bigger line of jil basics in sw, that stuff is just so expensive (dries too) it might be hard for an independent store to do it.

  8. also i think part of it is that Raf has always been a hard sell in LA. he used to have a fair number of retailers back in the day - maxfield, traffic, etc. in a way south willard is cutting out a lot of the stuff that wouldn't fly here but if they had a couple pieces they could definitely move them at least in the sale you know?

based on what raf's deal has been in the past with very conceptual collections, and now that he's doing all this design work with multiple lines - what would you guys say the raf simons mainline brand identity is trying to be right now? it's hard for me to tell.

  9. I feel what you're saying and he does repeat a lot of what he says to a lot of people, that's just how he is so I'm not surprised he told you.

i'm specifically referring to the fact that ryan said, "yeah i just got all the basic stuff that raf wears himself" to me about what he'd got the first season he started carrying raf. this is then what you're citing when you're talking all crazy shit but then you take it all bro-down like runway shit is for fags or whatever. it is really uncool.

as far as his buy, the only problem i have with it is that with the raf for example, it is far too basic. if he had put in 2-3 less easy pieces i think it would have been great. but as far as merchandising he's got enough expensive bless shit as it is so i guess it would be hard to justify the really expensive black raf things over here and the really expensive black bless things over there. i guess if it's just going to be basics i'd rather see another line in there, not raf simons.

it's kind of how i feel about Atelier in NY. i have always been disappointed becuse they push their own supergoth aesthetic so much when that is not really what the designers they carry are about so much as their own thing. i think it's important for the retailer to respect the brands and allow them to have their own identity in the retail environment, especially lesser known brands such as the ones A has.

slight digression - the CDG guerilla store in LA is so cool because to see all the cdg stuff hanging from different collections together the brand makes so much more sense than it does looking at the collections singularly...there was a lot of diversity. A or south willard could stand to have some more diversity in the buys maybe and still pursue a vision.

  10. was thinking about getting this. 50573F87-98CD-2EFE-9988767788A81E80.jpg

    Thoughts?

rolex is more known for their sports watches, the cellini is a newer line and i think a lot of them are quartz. for the money i saw a great SS case/leather band IWC dress watch for under 2k.

  11. Yeah, yeah- keep your nose clean, mind your business and you'll be fine. I used to live a block and a half off Skid Row; Rampart/Westlake/HiFi doesn't have anything on my experiences there.

i don't think you could reasonably suggest that you wouldn't have a problem living in that area if you lived there for a couple years unless you have secured parking. i can't stand living in places where i'm worried about getting broken into, i have too much expensive gear.

so were you living on san julian or what? a block and a half from skid row to me is more like los angeles/main whatever which is pretty nice esp considering the shitloads of cops downtown now and how they're trying to keep the fashion district to staples center/south park safe+clean for us "yuppie" types. har har

since i am in that area the majority of working days anyway i've been looking for lofts. anyone have any good leads?
