  1. got slapped with a customs fee when i got my package.  did this happen to anyone else?

they mark full value so you'll get hit for anything $250 or higher.

btw i love the security print but need another cap and bomber like a hole in my head.  hopefully they'll do a button down shirt or something....

  2. Ten C Snow Smock plus down liner, both sz 46

This is the piece that I'm going to miss the most, this is their version of a belted officer's field jacket in their signature knit nylon. Water resistant and just now taking on a rich patina and amazing handfeel. Other than the patina there's no significant signs of unwanted wear, I should note that the zipper gets a little fussy because the fabric is broken in but it's easy to work out - just mentioning as I know there are some exacting members of the board! Looking for $600 shipped US for the shell (original retail $1,000+)

width 1" below armpit is 20.5" (shell)

It features a slim upper block and straight legs, very cool. Details include a brass donut button and the original Uniqlo vintage chino fabric. Color is a true olive, shows no signs of wear. Looking for $45 shipped US.

The North Face Japan Pertex packable windstopper jacket, sz JP M (US S)

The lightest jacket I've ever owned next to the Outlier x DQM joint - it weighs less than a t-shirt. Wind resistant but has mega venting potential due to flow-through mesh pockets. Lightly water resistant. Slightly worn but in excellent condition, also comes with a TNF branded stow bag that you can pack the jacket into and make it into a package about the size of a fist. This is from TNF JP so fits one size smaller. $70 shipped US

  4. i got the faux shearling zip up and i have no idea what you guys are complaining about.  it's suitable for just about everything, fits like everything else uniqlo has made that i liked and is the first reasonable replacement for my 1998 helmut lang jeans zip up sweatshirt.

quit trying to get a $300 sweatshirt for $60 and you'll be fine

  5. American Uniqlo are generally one size larger than Asian Uniqlo (American S = Asian M) to accommodate our immensely obese population. This was true for the Hong Kong, Philippines, and Japanese stores I've bought product from. Don't know if this applies to collabs though

i dunno dude, americans and europeans have probably been bigger than asians for the last few hundreds years or so?

  6. this collaboration is insane on so many levels.  from a casual / terrace culture level it's on par with the endlessly strip mined 90s polo refs (that the design includes a polo nod is even nuttier).  from that respect, it's a total win for supreme in london.  along with adidas x palace it's on trend.

pretty fucked off about having bought the 30/30 coat system last year and having to come up with funds for this but c'est la vie

  7. bummed about this season after a promising ss.  shit is either recycled or not of interest to me personally.  i can get onboard a giger licensing deal on principle, but other than the chainlink tee there's not a lot of good design going on.

  8. i'm a couple days late, but taking western shit out of context and trying to make it uniquely japanese has been around since the mid 19th century.  i have this crazy free jazz record from the 70s that's all stephen c foster covers and this is also why baseball is so popular.  that said, i have yet to find a japanese definition of japaneseness that is other than "made by a japanese person" but acknowledge that cultural studies is not where i spend a lot of time.  i do know a fair few japanese dudes though, they all think my interest in japanese music is weird.  by extrapolation, i can't imagine why anyone from japan would have heard about roy except the real freaks out there.  this is probably not explaining my thoughts too well but fuck it.

those w david marx interviews look interesting though, gotta check it out

  9. I'd never quite thought of it before in those terms, but Kiya is dead-on.  Another example:  Tons of people in Japan love Bon Jovi, but nobody knows Van Halen.  Rush, despite being very successful around the world and a seeming shoe-in for a Big In Japan band, is virtually unknown in Japan for some weird reason.  Japan is very strange about the stuff it latches on to.

i think the rush thing is because it's really hard to translate the insane philosophical complexities of a tom sawyer or red barchetta to another culture / language.

  10. ...and wednesday:

Heart, then a heartwarming bagel at kenny and zuke's.  chilled out at the hotel until brunchish time.  accompanied my travel companion back to tasty and alder so he could try to pick up a waitress he met the previous day.

lunch: torta at guero at 9th and alder.  it was fine, nothing crazy special.

took a bus to mississippi records, where i bought more cassettes than records.  good place though, one of the best non mega stores i've been to recently which is kind of a bummer because it wasn't crazy great.  met a friend at fresh pot down the road and passed by worn path, where you can apparently can get trucker hats and artisanal slingshots.  they were closed, obviously.

met up with the portland tottenham firm at 4-4-2 in SE (@PDXspurs for the friendly against toronto fc), they were a good lot although the bartender was wearing a chelsea shirt.

one of the members drove me and the homie to ox, which was easily the best restaurant i went to the whole visit.  everything was correct and perfectly executed.  experienced staff almost didn't vibe me for not getting a main because i wanted to double down on sides.  which was the right move, to be honest.

after-dinner libations at the southeast wine collective, they have a bar you can taste their wines plus a handful of imported selections,  super wine-nerdy and cool, i bought a t-shirt because wine and coffee t-shirts are the new concert t-shirts.

finished up the evening at the landmark saloon down the street, there was live rootsy / country music, whiskey and a very nice way to wrap up an evening chilling next to a bonfire and chatting with some locals.  went back home and hit the hay, caught an early morning flight the next day.

    coming soon: epilogue

  11. bummed I missed the SEPDX event but had a few great days in town, wanted to recap below in case anyone is able to benefit.  my general note is that the city this most reminds me of is antwerp - a very high standard of living (food / booze / access to nature etc) in that the median is very good.  another similarity is that excellent retail offerings are excellent across the spectrum.

on the flip side, the worst thing about the city is probably the taxis

    Monday:

train in on the amtrak coastal starlight from seattle, weird boarding procedure but arrived ahead of time and some nice views.  i like trains.  booked the ace; unfortunately room wasn't ready so had a snack and drink at clyde common.  was sort of put off by the major turnover at the restaurant in the past few months so this was my only stop there.

lunch: nong's khao man gai (second to last portion), decent but nothing earthshattering.  that said, i'd kill to have this food cart pod within walking distance from where i live / work.

stopped by europa wine merchant a couple of blocks down, they focus on artisanal wine production world wide and have a great (and relatively affordable) offering.  the dude who runs the place is so knowledgeable / wine geeky that he may not be able to speak to normal people about it.  A+

obligatory trip to selfedge.  met tyler, who is the man.  picked up sugarcane light shirt in which NY was out of my size (no dangling preps here)

dinner at little bird because i wanted to eat before 10.  pretty good, not great.  waiter was relatively new to town, probably overshared on the abduction story front.

ended with drinks at pepe le moko at the ace which reminds me of the old subtonic space in NYC in that it's not a very social space.  could have done with out

    Tuesday:

walked to Heart for coffee, walking by the stumptown in the ground floor of my hotel because it's the correct thing to do.

brunch at tasty & alder, very solid and suprisingly good bi bim bap (weirdly this is bim bap on the menu, whatever the fuck that means).  had about three conversations with waitress on pronunciation of korean dishes (which i volunteered for, to be fair)

quick series of retail stops: powell's (must be seen to be believed - name another bookstore where you need to know the genre of a children's book to be able to find it); tanner (kind of boutiquey in a small way); everyday music (rule of thumb: if you see a dirty dancing LP priced at $15 !!!LEAVE INSTANTLY!!!); cacao (second best chocolate boutique i've been to - chocolate covered in SF being tough to compete with); danner (much cooler than it needs to be).

went back to selfedge with traveling companion, who needed jeans.  tyler was very patient

lunch: altengartz food cart, run by milwaukee expat of german decent - very nice

oyster happy hour at woodsman tavern in SE.  i was told the oysters were very good, had a sort of alright grilled peach dish - all that was missing was grilled peach flavor.  discuss dr. demento with bartender who was way too young to do so.

dinner: ate at the bar of ava genes, pasta dish was good, not exceptional considering the price and setting to be honest.

turned in early.  did i mention the half bottle of la stoppa i drank between lunch and happy hour?

    coming soon: wednesday
