  1. Fattybfat ,

The 551zxx in your pics are a repro of a 1960s jean , the precursor of the 505 . The originals were the first Levi preshrunk jeans , the LVC booklet that came with my pair date the repro to a 1963 jean . I have bought a lot of jeans , repro jeans , my pair of 551zxx are by far the best pair of jeans I have ever owned .

ps there is a lvc booklet thread on superdenim, might be pics of 551zxx in it .

  2. Going two sizes up on 1947s , just got a pair of W38 L34 , measuring just over 18 1/2 inches width across the waist . If these shrink 2 - 3 inches on the waist after soaking they should stretch to about a 35 inch waist with hopefully a looser thigh fit and wider leg opening . I am looking for a more authentic fit and hopefully this will do it !!

  3. ChuckO , thanks . At 15yrs old I would have thought that myself but nearly 28yrs later it is sadly nostalgia . Still , it's hard to beat Johnny Burnette & the R&R Trio ( theres a couple of great clips on youtube of them from around 1955/56 )and Edwins Lee repros are great to wear .

  4. ^^What model are they?

Mine are Lee (Edwin) 1952 101z repros , currently available , Pauls' are Lee Europe generic 1950/60s 101zs (unless Paul advises different) repros from mid 1990s to early/mid 2000s which are no longer available . Nearest and dearest to these are the current 1966 101z .

  5. Paul , kudos to you .

As an aside I would be interested in your opinion of the current season s501xx . I am ' retiring ' my current linep for various reaons (weightgain being one) 44s are appealing although I am considering sizing x2 on 47s . Gravitaitng between these and the 44 Lee 101 .

  6. Some of these have been posted previously but just an update on my LVC collection , all Valencia St production from circa1996 - 2000 .

Jeans - 1955 501xx from 0896 see pic in PaulTs post top of page . (tag 36/36 now 34/33)

    - 551zxx from Oct 97 (look slimmer in pic than real life) tag 34/32 preshrunk

    Jackets - 507xx from Mar 2000 tag 44

    - 506xx from Jun 2000 tag 44

  7. Thanks Paul ,

They differ from the recent 1955s in that the arcs have a gold type colored thread also the 50/60s stylised 501XX lettering / digits , similar to te 551zxx . However I just wish Levis had given them an offset belt loop !!!!

  8. Pics of repro Lee 1966 and 1952 101Z . 1966 is Lee Euorope and the 1952 is the licensed Edwin version . I like these jeans so much these are the second pairs I have bought of each of these , both within the last 2-3 weeks . Got to love those back pockets !!!!

  9. Hi ,

Ask youreslf what do you want form your jeans -

a pair of jeans that fit good but have little or no combs , fades - go 40c+ and hot dry

a pair that you need to wear a belt with for a few cold washes then shrink when faded - cold /warm wash in bath and outdoor line dry (dependent on how you have raw sized).

Never use detergent unless in extreme circumstances !!!

Personally , for what its worth , if you have purchased a size up with 55s , hot soak in a bath for a couple of hours and line dry . They will stretch back but persevere until you really feel the need to warm wash . Airfrog is correct , so hang in there . I am two/three pairs thru some Levi/Lee repro models to being happy with size , fading , etc... (and no rule generally fits all mdels in my book !!! so you are correct to ask ) However if $ is an issue be conservative . Aside form this , I hope you achieve what you want/with from your jeans !!!

  10. My experience is size up on 47s (eg actual W34 L32 go W36 L34 raw ) and as actual on 55s (eg W34 go W34 raw and cold soak/wash only) . In my opinion ,for what it is worth ,this will come as close as you will get to original worn sizing , based on extensive photo research . Other might disagree but thats m 0.2c .

As for other features well 1947s are very close (pockets slightly smaller altho have seen a few pics with small pockets !) , 55s belt loop and patch digits/letter styling is wrong for mid 50s but take the patch off you are close to an early 50s 501xx . However I think these should really be considered generic repros as it would be hard to reproduce exact copies in every size given the different factories and their idyosincracies(sp) during the mid 20th century .

  11. Few pics of my 551zxx (from Oct 97) vs 2007 1947s and me wearing 551zxx vs 507xx (50/60s) and 1947s vs 506xx (40s/e50s) Jackets are 03 and 06 2000 . All are Valencia St manufacture bar the 1947s . Pics are not great but hope you enjoy .

  12. Yes, sounds like they sewed a 1901 oilcloth patch to the 47 jeans by mistake. Which would be the most obvious reason for the '10oz 1947 jeans' story.

It would be hard for the wrong denim to be used given that the 10oz blue-line fabric comes from Japan & is probably more expensive than the Cone product.

Came across a vintage site yesterday , see Vintage Levi..... post and interestingly picked up on these post war 1940s Levis with a 10oz patch . Thought this relevant , although not LVC , but shows Levis seemed to sell 10oz 501xx post war .
