  1. Quote: How far is presso from harajuku/aoyama? I'm assuming those places are the ebst to shop/chill.

Harajuku is 2 stops away on the yamanote line so if i remember correctly, they say it's 5 min although it might be 4 (well you get the point). you could even walk if you wanted to, i'd say about 30 min. so it's really close. and although there's isn't much good shopping to do in Shinjuku in my opinion, it's still one of the nicest neighborhoood in Tokyo, very lively at night. althought Harajuku/Aoyama is a cool place, there's much much more in Tokyo than only that, don't limit your visits to there.

  2. Quote: What's the deal with japanese houses? Steaming hot in the summertime, Ice cubes in the winter. Even in Tokyo I rememeber sitting in the house bent over the kerosene heater on winter evenings with my fleece and hood and coat on, my hands under the grill ... Kinda took me by surprise that the houses are made of mud and timber. Expected them to be star trek sliding doors and toilets that talk to you ( but of course they save that for the shops)

everyday i ask myself the same question and so far, i've seriously asked pretty much every japanese i've talk to since november (that's quite a lot) and i haven't gotten any intelligent answer apart from "living in the cold makes you tougher" i'm really lucky cause the electrical bill is included in my rent so i can affort to have all the air conditioning unit in my house working all the time, but still, i don't understand. you might be interested in reading that article though http://www.davidappleyard.com/japan/jp10.htm

it's about the whole house are freaking cold thing.

  3. Quote: If you don't have the Tokyo superstars yet make sure you get a size up, they are small as hell

i'll second that, bought these over the holidays and they are really small, actually to the point where my right foot is unconfortable. but they look real nice though. often, the last shoe pair available from limited edition are large size so if you check these sites, you might find something to your liking.

you might also check niketalk, always has a bunch of people selling shoes.

as for bapesta, mine's feel much bigger than my af1 but i have heard that their sizing is inconsistent so a second opinion might be welcome.

  4. Quote: UNIQLO also offers a line of Japanese premium denim-from the same denim fabric mill used by many high-end denim brands-available for $39.50.

    from Uniqlo american website

people wondered where they were produce in this thread so when i saw that, i thought you might be interested. they don't say where it's produced though.

  5. although most of their model comes with an elastic, this brand http://www.vilebrequin.com/ is supposed to be real popular ( i did a marketing research on one of their competitor last year). not really my type of swinwear but you might like it and they have an online store.

also, some high end fashion brands often have swimwear in their line. don't know where you live but going to places like Bloomberg or macy's, you might find something you like.

and although they fall in the long surf-type boardshort, i really love the one's Stussy makes, own 2 pairs myself

  6. for their Hello Nasty tour, the Beastie Boys endorsed DC Shoes cause they said that the shoes were produced in a humane way with decent salary and working condition. i remember DC got a lot of good publicity out of that since the Beastie Boys reputation in that area is pretty solid. the shoes used to be made in Korea but i haven't owned a pair for a long while so i'm not sure about now. and well, DC shoes are not for everyone , i really hope myself they would stop making shoes with the huge tongue.

  7. i'm gonna start by a good news, the US dollar has gained something like 20 to 25% on the yen in the past months so that's gonna make a big difference for you compared to the last time you came here. pricing can be weird in my opinion in Japan, some things are just overpriced while some are reasonable or even cheaper. a thing you have to keep in mind is that clothing or footwear is much cheaper in the us than pretty much anywhere else in the world. for exemple, i'm from montreal and before i moved to tokyo, i used to go vermont or new york almost every months or so cause it was so much cheaper. and canada is much cheaper than europe. footwear is around twice as expensive in europe as in the states in my opinion (maybe even more in scandinavia, lived in norway for a while and was always freaked out how overpriced everything was. like they would have sales in jan and feb and whole store would be like 50% off and it would still be more expensive than canada).

also, some international brand in japan command much higher price compared to similar products (Stussy or Recon is a good exemple).but in general, with the current exchange rate, i don't find it that expensive anymore to shop here.

some japanese brand will be significantly cheaper here than in the states like Bape or Edwin and i guess most high end japanese denims. as must shop brands/stores, i don't know what you are into but a trip to harajuku is a must as well as daikanyama and shibuya in my opinion. just check the superfuture map or do a search on the forum and you might find pretty much all that you need. there was this thread not long ago called tokyo shopping report that you might be interested in, lots of info about shop

  8. Quote: Okay, if your'e looking for a leather "street" belt, try Nixon or Volcom, they have pretty cool designs for leather

i'm also very into the nixon belt, i own 3 right now and I'm super satisfied about the quality, especially that they aren't the most expensive belt out there.

  9. anything by Looptroop, it's by far the most underrated group ever in my opinion, cannot count how many peoples i got really stoked by making them listen to the records

    otherwise

    souls of mischief - 93 t'ill infinity

all the old boot camp records (OCG - the storm, Smif'n Wessun - dah shinnin, Heltah Skeltah - nocturnal, black moon enta tha stage)

    group home - livin' proof

pretty much all records by living legends

  10. while we're on the KIDS subject, i have a question to ask. anyone know what is the cap Casper is wearing during the movie (baseball cap with NYC in white letter). i have heard that it was the cap of a new york baseball team back in the negro league, but when new era retroed those, that hat wasn't there. anyway, i've been looking for that cap (not seriously, but still) since the movie came out and be interested if anyone knew. and i really recomend that movie also.

    Quote:

Quote: Larry Clark is a talented photographer and hit-and-miss director obsessed with underage sex and seeing boys shirtless, he's pretty disturbing sometimes but Kids is worth watching. Aside from his weird voyeuristic tendencies or maybe because of them Clark has been able to successfully capture the aimlessness and somewhat pathetic lack of substance and value system in today’s youth, which mirror his own experience growing up in Tulsa (it’s also the title of one of his photo books) in the 40s. While drugs and skate/street culture are usually part of his work I don’t think we can say the later is a central of even positive part of his work. “Kids†is definitely NOT about LES or street culture as the previous poster might lead you to believe….it’s more about the themes mentioned before and the prevalence of AIDS.

i agree with most of what u say about larry clark........and Kids is predominantly about AIDS and today's youth and although it is not solely about LES kids / street culture...it does take place in NYC with mostly NYC kids as actors and even more specifically around the LES / downtown area. Most of the movie takes place downtown from Washington Square park to Hell Park in Soho where they go swimming.........so while its not all about downtown NYC, the backdrop is a big part of the movie and feel of it......grittty and dirty........

his movies Bully and Ken Park (krap nek) were just ok...watchable, but not great....though the preview for "Wassup Rockers" looks pretty good...though I havent seen or heard anything aobut it in a long time....and don't know if it even came out...anyone know?

i think there is 2 ways to see that movie. i was like 14 or 15 when it came out and it quickly became one on my favorite movie. of course you cannot avoid the AIDS theme but there like you said, there's also a strong them about LES kids/skateboarding. up to this day, when i watch this movie, it mostly remind me of the good old time when i had nothing better to do than skate and party. of course the i see the AIDS theme more now but depending on your background, i think you will see this movie very diferently.

  11. i don't think it has anything to do with the climate but more just of a fashion trend. kind a like a couple years ago when everyone was rocking The North Face jackets and stuff and you knew most of these people were not at all into outdoor winter sports. and like you said, the quality of outdoor sports manufacturers is usually pretty much the best in terms of bags and outerwear.

  12. Sal 23 : a classic

Es SLB : i owned like 3 pairs of those, wish they could retro them like the 23

Es Koston 1 : in my opinion, these shoes really changed how skate shoe looked

Airwalk 540 : my first pair... seen those in Japan like 4 years ago and sleeped on them, cannot find them now......

DC Colin McKay 3 : i think it's the 3, the hi-top one, had this shoe in every color that came out

althought i've never skated in them, i'll give the dunk sb a special mention

  13. if you want shoes, http://www.vintagekicks.com/ does have quite a lot. the problem with bape stuff online is that people put ridiculous markup on the stuff they're selling. bapesta now sell for about 125$ in Tokyo, i don't see any reason why you should pay 300. if ever someones interrested, i could pick up a pair for you. as for clothes, http://www.notone.com// carry some but again, it way too expensive in my opinion. another problem about bape is that it's much more expensive in the US or in the UK than in Japan so it's really easy to make a quick buck for peoples living in Japan by reselling the products....
