  1. Mate recently explained in very vague terms what lucid dreaming is. Skimmed a website for a few minutes where it talked about some inception like totem concept to check whether you're in reality or a dream i.e. checking your watch or reading some calendar entry on your phone. All sounds kinda wack but the idea as I understand it is to be able to control your actions when dreaming. One of the first steps apparently is to write down a dream as soon as you have it and pick out recurring patterns and themes. The last two I had were of getting bright blue tattoos around my mouth and up to my eyebrows of many tiny cartoon characters by the gf, and the other was having a pulse measurement that was like 120bpm, which made me heaps annoyed cos I knew it should be much much lower.

Anyway, this shit will be old to some of u but whatever, I find it fascinating. It'll be like maximizing your life experiences through added 'productivity' while sleeping.

  2. Thanks aso, I can become very obsessed with minor details, and this was the case when considering all the different brands and fabrics available on the market. Did research on the interwebz till like 2am last night lol... Ended up getting the eVent jacket, the MacPac SA was very helpful and the price was reasonable. Gonna go take it for a test ride now.

  3. I think those NS look fine. If you want a tighter hem, the PS is probably a better bet. Having said that, I had my PS brought in at a tailor, and they did a fine job. I've also taken the risk on a pair of Dior's in the past, and the result was also to my satisfaction.

  4. Ah of course. The colour is 'industrial orange' or something with the reinforced areas in a grey.

It's a North Face Summit Series made from Goretex XCR. I bought it off eBay, but pretty sure I read they'd provide repairs at a reasonable cost. Might get in touch with them as well.

If I do go with a new jacket, any thoughts on Paclite vs. eVENT? I quite like the Arc'teryx Alpha SL in the 'carbon copy', but I haven't seen it locally so can't try it on. Also plan on riding in it and have read that eVENT breathes a lot better. Tried on a MacPac Traverse jacket today on sale (no arm-pit vents and only a chest-pocket). Cost-wise they are similar, and both are 2.5 layers as I understand.

Edit: And how about those Goretex repair kits? They're cheap and I can iron one on, but a wash or two would probably do it in eh?

  5. Anyone had Goretex repaired by a 'certified' vendor? There's only two in Australia and I'm not sure what to expect both in terms of cost and workmanship. Fell off the bike and tore through the fabric in a few locations. Not sure if I should just leave it and buy a new one. The velcro tabs around the wrists have also become fluffy and doesn't hold properly any more, which is pretty shit. Is something like that repairable?

APC NS that I haven't put on for a couple of years now.

Edit: maybe posted before, maybe not.

    Worn for ~18 months regularly

    Washed ~half a dozen times

    Crotch patched

Got a pair of PS recently and trying to wear that in when I can, mostly through cycling. The ass is gonna turn hella white first and probably blow out prematurely... ohwell

  9. I had a ebook once but couldn't get used to it. Every new page would 'blink', and it broke the rhythm. Anyway, Kahneman's book is well worth the read and I really can't recommend it enough. His work with Tversky on decision making and cognitive biases was easily my favorite subject when studying engineering.

Noticed a few people on here reading1Q84. What do you all reckon? I found it rather slow and repetitive. Murakami also recycled Ushikawa from his previous works, which was annoying. But then again, the main characters are always pretty similar anyway. I much preferred Wind Up Bird.

  10. Great thread. Topic's real close to heart. Gonna rant.

After finishing uni three years ago and with a high paying job lined up I was imagining all the shit I could buy and the lifestyle changes that'd come with it all. Happened to read Affluenza during that time as well, and it affirmed the notion that money's not happiness. After starting work I told myself that I could live on the same salary for life and be content. The first pay rise and the hit I got from it made me wary though. Dreaded the treadmill idea. Got chatting with an old lecturer from uni over drinks one day. Money was never a problem for him but he had personal troubles at home. He confided that meditation was his out and that he'd been hard at it for years. Strangely, he seemed guarded about practicing it. Didn't think he'd give a fuck bout what anybody else thought. Never got around to giving meditation a go, but the thrill of pay rises has faded. Simple things as they always have, continues to give me the greatest pleasure. And I'm still annoyed to find myself wanting more, and picturing this ever-changing, imagined lifestyle that american hearts' described. I've come to the conclusion that a moderate amount of material ambition isn't anything to worry about. It's only when it becomes an obsession should it become a problem. Nothing in excess.

  11. finished white noise (after hearing the hype here) and the wind-up bird chronicles recently. enjoyed both but i have a suspicion that rubin isn't the best translator. received 1Q84 as a gift for christmas and will probably shelve it for a while.

picked this up today randomly on the cheap
