  1. Thanks for the comments folks.

Ranon. I used an old Canon FTb from 1971 with a 50mm f1.4 lens. I found the camera on ebay for like 30 bucks and the lens was 80 bucks. I think for a modern canon lens of the same stature I would have had to spend like 500 to 1000. I used some basic TMAX 400 film and had it developed at the local drugstore.

I like the lens because at large apertures with the focus at infinity you get a little vignetting at the corners. It is less than ideal, but I do like the effect. I also shot these with a polarizing filter.

  2. Alright, most likely the last update I will have on this. I got some film in and some of the pics turned out good.

The little dude and I decided to take a hike in malibu canyon. Well the first day we went to find the spot we got lost. Apparently the turn off isn't as obvious as I thought it would be. Anyways, we ended up on highway one where I drove around looking for cell reception. I stopped on the side of the road across from this little display, which I suppose somebody thinks is artwork. I don't quite know what to make of it, but I assume some rich uptight chump spent a pretty penny on it and somewhere else there is an artist laughing his ass off that he was able to sell this to some chump in malibu.

Well once we found the joint it started poring rain and we decided to hold off a day. On the way back there are some really beautiful plots of land in the hills. One in particular stood out. This dude was obviously a collector of sorts. Maybe he posts on here and is a crazy LVC nut. There were some old gas pumps, old blacksmith tools. Some antique signs. I wanted to get closer, but I didn't want to be weird.

Well the following day we made it to the trail. It was nice, I guess, rather uneventful. The description was that wove across a creek and the little dude was really looking forward to the creek, well it turns out there was only a dry creek.... lame. So my son decided to make his own creek.

Here are some pics from the trail and after as well.

And the little guy took his digital camera with him (it is an old point and shoot I had back in the day) and he snapped a pic of me.

These are off to the next dude in line, which I think is grooveholmes. Here's hoping his month is a little more exciting.

  3. Would that be ms. Pollard? I've been wanting to pick this up- I'm a huge Gibson fan, but it seems every successive book packs a bit less punch than the last. If no one is being devoured by nanobots and chased be space-faring rastafarians while hanging from their fingers from a out-jutting hobo encampment plastered to the side of the Bay Bridge, I'm not really there.

Pattern recognition did have one of my favorite quotes of all time, where Pollard is describing the Tommy Hillfiger brand as a ""simulacra of simulacra of simulacra. A dilute tincture of Ralph Lauren, who had himself diluted the glory days of Brooks Brothers, who themselves had stepped on the product of Jermyn Street and Savile Row ... There must be some Tommy Hilfiger event horizon, beyond which it is impossible to be more derivative, more removed from the source, more devoid of soul."

Maybe RRL has gone beyond the TH event horizon? While I like some of their pieces, they all have a curiously flat, pupil-repelling quality, as if they don't entirely exist on this plane.

Sounds like baudrillard if he was a fashion whore, but in general anytime I look through a lightning magazine I have him screaming at me in the back of my mind.

  4. Alright this is my last weekend with these guys. I am waiting on some film to be developed from last weekend's jaunt, then I will update. And hopefully we can find something cool to do this weekend as well.

Once again, sorry for the boring leg.

Who do i send these off to next. Is it grooveholmes?

  5. hey im thinking of getting a pair engineer boots, but im not looking for something of wesco level quality. I plan to use em all winter beat em up and then get them resoled by takeshi san, willies, or my guy in new york.

    What do u guys suggest

Wait, so you don't want to buy something that is high quality like wesco, but then you want to turn around and blow a ton of cash on a resole from takashi? That sounds a little backwards to me. A resole should not be a significant portion of the initial investment.

Also, I'm with big truck on this one, but in general all of SUFU has just turned into a "look what I bought when I was in the big city this weekend" type of board. I don't necessarily exclude myself from that group.

  6. Regarding the tag. Most of y'all could care less, I guess, but folks like Joseph Hill do so here it goes. Straight from John's mouth. This is from an email he sent me:

"Proper USA style unions aren't really known here, but for the most part smaller Japanese firms like we work with are notorious for taking care of their employees. It's the bigger Tokyo companies that you hear about when a worker "works himself to death." Up to now I have visited nearly every company that I deal with and toured the factories to make sure nothing suspicious is going on. Well, I never expect to find anything suspicious (it's Japan, not China), the tours are mainly for learning purposes. I've yet to visit the guy that makes my paper hangtags, and I of course haven't been to the Vibram factory where the heels of my shoes are made. And of course some thread that a company might use I don't know what is up with...Some thread I do know though 'cause I was at the factory a few weeks back. You can see some of those photos on my facebook (I had lunch with the owner of the factory too). Button factory is a great place too. I think I can safely say we know more about what is going on and who is making our clothes than any company out there. I'm lucky to live where I live, most every factory I use is within 2 hours from me."

It would seem that John cares about the working conditions of the factories where his clothes are made as well.

  7. Any RS2 Updates?

I emailed Roy to ask him about the specs for the Nihon Menpu Denim - he replied saying that he'll definately dig them up..."They're in a drawer somewhere".

Will let you know what i find out.

If you want to know what the denim will age like, go check out the pics I posted of the tour jeans. They're made of the same denim.

  8. We did pay her to say that. :)

Sorry for the lack of updates guys. I haven't been doing much but working the past couple weeks.

Hopefully we can find something interesting to do this weekend.

BTW, thanks for the kind word shubharamani.

  9. I don't think there are any great books, but sewing, in general, is not that difficult, but it just takes consistent practice. Don't start with a pair of jeans, cuz they might just be a waste. they won't fit and you most likely won't wear them. Start with a vest or bag or something simple. A pair of shorts works pretty well, because they don't have to fit extremely well and they help you grow on the construction of jeans. Get some patterns and get going.

  10. I also forgot to mention that these are not on the speedway website, but you may have to email John to get a pair of them. I think they may be running low on sizes right now, but John did tell me that they will be making more of these.

  11. Beautiful! I can't wait till it cools down a bit so I can actually wear mine... Did you give that a soak yet or is it still raw?

I washed it about a month ago. Hand wash with hose water and some dr. bronners.

  12. Feeling pretty lucky to have this type of flexibility in my wardrobe. The only thing ROY needs to start making are some twill trousers.
