  1. Hi,

I'm interested in picking up a pair of the Black Marias - do they stretch much at all? I'm usually a 31 in most jeans, 29 in APCs. I'm wondering if I should go TTS or 1 size down (30) with the greasers for a slightly slimmer fit.

If you want a slightly slimmer fit, get the Chelseas TTS and you should be good to go. The cuts aren't drastically different. My 2 cents anyway.

  2. Thought i'd show some pictures of a recently acquired Gordon & Ferguson M442a. Sadly it's too big for me so i'll be selling on at some point to fund something that's my size (this isn't a sales pitch btw). Lovely jacket tho'

Beautiful jacket - but why'd someone put an A-4 patch on a WW2 era jacket? Unless it was like a Captain's jacket or something. Any stenciling or personal information associated with the jacket to indicate who it's original owner or owners might be?

  3. I decided to add some alternations to my Samurai jacket.  Inside pockets and a tab where you can hang it on a coat hook.  I'm pretty happy with the results.

Great idea and execution ... I didn't notice any threads on the face of the jacket.

Me either! It looks like the pockets are sewn into the back of the front chest pockets, so you don't see the stitching. Nicely done.

  4. Yes, I agree, I am looking for a brand in the LVC 505 price range with a 32 inseam and a clean design, would you know something like that? I know of 3sixteen, NSDG, Tellason, Japan Blue etc. but all the custom chainstich thing drive me a bit nuts, I would love to buy quality products like that ready to wear. I know the shops can do the hemming, but the results can a bit shitty some times.

I ordered Rogue Territory Stantons direct from the company, and requested a hemming, which, since I ordered them direct, was free, and their hem job is essentially the same as original. I realize this isn't exactly ready to wear, but I can vouch for the results (As I can for the 3:sixteens I bought from SelfEdge).

  5. Hey Kiya,

Any chance this Stevenson jacket makes a Self Edge appearance? http://www.soc-la.com/news.php?c=72

I know you're all-in on the Flat Head leathers, but I figured I'd ask.

I'm curious what the page says (but obviously I can't read the script) about the AN-J3, it's a pretty interesting jacket, and the name does appear on late(ish) wartime docs, but it wasn't ever issued to flight personnel, though possibly it was purchased privately for use by flight crews. The AN-J3A wound up being almost exclusively utilized by the Navy and Marines (it was basically an M-422A, as the naval versions had no epaulets). But the AN-J3 was always an interesting concept, essentially being an A-2 with the back of an M-422A.

  6. Formula Pfaff, jortslife, and I will be going on an adventure in our sweats tomorrow! Gonna hit up Bad Wolf Coffee, John Hancock Center, Michigan Ave, etc. If anyone has any other recommendations/suggestions for locations to visit/photograph (in Chicago)...let me know

Wear your sweats and go to Kumas Corner. They have great beers, whiskey on tap, and your sweats will smell like meat when you leave. Belmont and California so it's off the Belmont bus, or you can take the Blue line and walk over.

Go to Revolution Brewery for their beers which are delicious, and Boiler Room for a PB&J (slice of pizza, tall boy of PBR and a shot of Jameson, for $7.50), they're easily accessible by train (Blue line) and both a lot of fun.

Big Star can also be a blast, delicious cocktails, good beer list and tacos. It's also good people watching.

  7. yeah those Vans are the bomb, just wish they make them here would def pay more.

Yes, I would definitely pay more. I also wish they'd make the Era in that same style - I like the slightly tighter fit around the ankle.

A friend told me that a lot of the machinery for sneakers to be made in America just doesn't physically exist any more, and that's why there aren't more startups designing made in the USA canvas sneakers (think Chucks and the like).

  8. I thinking about getting LVC 505 1967 rigid, made in turkey, is this a good quality product? how would you compare to 3 sixteen qualitywise?

    cheers

They are a quality product, however, I'd rate 3sixteen as superior (my personal opinion, but I have owned both). Ultimately, though, it's about how you want them to fit. The 505's are going to be a more vintage fit, even if you size em trim, the 3sixteens are a more modern fit - lower waist, lower pocket position (due to yoke differences).

  9. So, I'm going to be in New York for a week (March 31-April 5) for work, and I'd love to check out the Left Field space - what are your hours like? I fly out hella early on Saturday the 5th, so I was hoping that a stop by during the week might be possible.

  10. Sorry for the late reply.  I think mine stopped smelling like sulfur after a few months.  the smell does go away though, hang tight and keep on wearing them.

I'm wearing them today. Little brimstone smell won't keep them off my legs. They're just past the crunchy phase, really conforming to my shape nicely.

  11. Anyone have the Stealth fabric jeans? I've got the Stealth Stantons, and I love them, they're breaking in nicely (had them about two weeks), but I still smell like brimstone. I don't mind being mistaken for Lucifer, but I was curious how long I should expect the odor to remain.

  12. Mr. Black - that looks like a classic A-2 to me. Now, the reason I don't wear A-2's is because I don't tuck shirts in, and given modern fashion's lower rised pants, you often look like your a slob with a too-short jacket. But as you seem to tuck in shirts, I'd say it's a non-issue. Good sleeve length and shoulder alignment, too.

  13. My thirty-something torso is fortunately not afflicted with a gut, but I am annoyingly keg shaped; if anyone has (like me) obsessively read and re-read Cryptonomicon, when Neal Stephenson describes Randy as being keg shaped, with excess weight distributed across my torso, he might as well have been describing me.

But it's very cyclical - beer out of keg into my mouth and into a keg again.

I've got two pairs of Greasers, but I'm toying with the Chelseaas - unless I keep misreading the measurements, the diferences are pretty modest; certainly fairly modest compared to other brands differentiation between a straight and slim cut. Is it fair to call the Chelseas something of a slim/straight to the knee and then a taper from knee down?

  14. Christian, I understand if you're loathe to give details, but I'd appreciate any information you can pass along about your black Type II jacket - when does it release (in the jean jacket thread someone said early Spring this year), how does it fit (short? boxy? longer? trim?) and how much will it cost. I'm the type of guy who wants to be prepared when it drops, as it's by all appearances, pretty much my dream jacket.

  15. picked up the dry bones bad ass jacket. can't really think of another way to describe it. despite my bored face, i'm very excited about this purchase. thanks kiya!

As you should be, that jacket is the jam! I am grateful (bank account)/sad (personally) that it doesn't come in large enough sizes for me. I experience that vicarious joy.
