Not much change- from the 1890’s to 1930’s and beyond?

I would say by the 1940s this style began to disappear; most work shirts even would have “button-through” chest pockets as standard, something that in the 1920s wasn’t always standard.

Interested to see how collars changed; I know that at the turn of the century and even into the 1910s collars tended to be shorter and more square, not spearpoints of the 1930s and ‘40s:

storage shed scrap, thrown out sometime in the early 1890's. I thought this scrap was from your typical- watch pocket shirt, like the LVC shirt you see in the picture...it's not, the scrap pocket is left breast, and not your tiny size- for a watch pocket.

Here’s a 1930s shirt with a similar pocket, just slightly narrower and taller:

  3. Being offended isn’t a personality trait but not everyone got that memo.

For me personally I try to avoid buying things mass-produced in China because the line between most medium and large business and government there is blurred. I live in Taiwan, and China is trying to conquer us and turn Taiwan from a democracy into another province of China’s one-party authoritarian police state, so the last thing I want to do is support that.

Those are very nice - it would be interesting to know how long the pre-order will run for and if it's pre-order only?

    @Iron Horse?

Hey @Ar_thor! The pre-order will run as long as I have stock, but we’re only making 100 total of these in 2 colors, so 50 per color over 5 sizes means we’ll be making 10 total per size/color. In other words, not that many per size!

He’s been out of RS since 2012ish.

My understanding - and I’m open to correction here - is that he sold it (or his share of it) and that Runabout hasn’t produced any denim goods due to a non compete.

This is what I’ve heard as well.

When is a chore coat not a chore coat? What defines it?

AFAIK, the defining qualities of a chore coat include:

-Length; should be longer than a blouse (denim jacket) and reach at least halfway down one's rear, preferably covering it entirely

-Two large patch pockets at the bottom of the front, generally open top (no flap) plus another patch pocket or two on the chest, one with a side opening to accommodate a pocket watch (usually on the wearer’s left-hand sign, made with right-handers in mind); optional inside pocket

-Wobble shank buttons early on; snap buttons on later versions

-No pleating on front (as on a blouse/denim jacket) but a wide facing that flares out to meet the outer edges of the collar stand at the base

-No game pockets on the side or back (as seen on hunting coats)

    -No slash/hand warmer pockets

-No riveting as on a denim blouse; bartacks instead

-Cloth or disposable paper patches; no leather patches

    -Curved deep cuff

-No upper chest panel like on a denim jacket

-Two-piece back with a seam down the middle

    -Plain front (no bottom panel)

As always, this is historical, so modern interpretations can feel free to change things up, not preaching the gospel here.

That shirt is so out of place eh. White/ecru henley/long sleeved t-shirt would be ok... but definitely not a wabash shirt!

A wabash polka dot shirt was one look, but the main one worn though was definitely a white/ecru long-sleeved collared shirt:

Subtler stripes here for a bit of power clashing:

Band collar (attachable collar removed to keep it presentable for going to and from work):

The cinch on the FW pulls the belt loops - which are inextricably and inexplicably sewn over the cinch, making it look like they really ran out of room for all of the ornaments they wanted to pack on.

Perhaps missing the point here, but explicably it is a vintage detail (whether one agrees with it or not is another matter):

Obviously the point comes back to a Dieter Rams (who hated the design of cars in the '50s and '60s, appropriately enough) or Steve Jobs philosophy on design that design is not just about how things look, it's about how they work.
