  1. I'm looking at renting an apartment for 6 days through Airbnb. Would Chinatown, Lower Nob Hill or Mission District be best? this is where I've found some within my range

I eat gluten/dairy free so would be good to be within range of a wholefood type grocery store.

(first time to the the US)

it all depends on where in those neighborhoods youll be living. but it is san francisco after all, so all your dietary idiosyncrasies would be withing walking distance or a bus ride away. i lived in chinatown which is definitely nongluten friendly if all you eat are veggies. i miss my old spot, expensive and kinda divey but i lived on the top floor with a private rooftop. i used to smoke hella doobies up there.

  2. never been too much of a fan of the california burrito. i dont hate it, but i dont really go out of my way to order it. in SD i usually get machaca cuz its more common down there for some reason. and its fucken delicious. cant really vouch for any place in particular cuz its been a long time since ive been back but i used to like la fuentes machaca in hillcrest back when it was a total chunti shack.

for horchata in califoofie, i like panchitas #2 in sf. its a salvadorean joint and they keep a pitcher of homemade horchata in the fridge with all kinds of herbal grit up in it. super legit.

in LA i like the oaxacan horchata smoothie thing at guelaguetza. its pink and has oatmeal and shit in it.

  3. the fireworks show is cool if you like watching the fog light up in different colors. ive never been on a clear night but you might have luck this year. id ditch the car and the wharf and hoof it up to coit tower or thereabouts. its a much better view, like almost eye level with the explosions.

  4. Will you have a car?

If not, i would stick with living in these hoods:

    Mission

    Castro

    Bernal Heights

    Potrero Hill

    SOMA

    Hayes Valley

i think folks that arent used to driving, and more importantly parking, in sf should really take that into consideration when living on a hill. cuz chances are youll have your ride parked at home most the time and be dragging ass up and down a hill with groceries and what nots to and from home. and depending on high up on the hill you live, potrero is unrelenting. of course, the view of downtown easily makes up for it, for what thats worth.

noe valley is like a yuppie black hole. ive had friends move there from other parts of sf never to be seen or heard from again. just rumored sightings in prius's and shit. :)

  5. community shoulda went out like obi-wan instead of mace windu. i stopped watching around episode 3 of season 4 because it was really starting to depress me how bad it was getting. then i realized i stopped watching tv all together. workaholics picked up though, straight LORDING!

  6. i'm interested in the valley taco trucks > la taco trucks sentiment though. first time i've actually heard that.

simply put, its the handmade tortillas. they actually take the extra 30 seconds to pinch off a knob of dough and mash it in the press. there are trucks in LA that do it, but its the exception, not the norm that it seems to be in the NE valley. its comparable to the difference between a decent sandwich, and a decent sandwich with excellent bread.

al vapor style tacos are a special treat. theyre steamed whole like tamales so the tortillas turn reddish and soak up all that meat grease and are super tender like dumplings. they just remind me of the low end street food in mexico city that dudes sell out of giant baskets [tacos de canasta] for like 20 cents each.

my favorite lebanese joint, carnival, is in the valley. its much lower key than spots like carousel. no belly dancers and shit, just og lebanese dudes, generic decor and extra extra fresh produce. their desserts are the business too.

a lot of the prop houses dump off their goods at various spots throughout the northeast, but i hate giving away those spots. if you find them, theyre goldmines. i got a brass fire hydrant and an old la weekly newspaper vending thingie on the cheap out there not to mention countless records. a million times better than thrift stores cuz they have giant fixtures not just pitily bric-a-brac.

one [not so]secret spot of mine i will give away is the san fernando swap meet. trust me, its no secret if youre latino. theres a vendor there that claims he drives in from mexico every week with imported oaxacan cheeses, herbs, dry goods and its the only place in LA ive ever found those giant puffed tostada things. i dont know what theyre called but they are legit. they sell them by the garbage bag load for like $20 worth every penny.

  7. dudes like to front on the valley cuz its been done since like forever. but its not that bad. granted, you cant get $500 nikes and bespoke tanktops, but foodwise i think its just as varied as LA proper. the best portuguese bakery in LA [natas] is on ventura blvd with legit malasadas, especially since theyre made to order. the thai restaurants along sherman way are better [imo] than hollywood. of course, there's much hotter ass on the blvd. but foodwise, i gotta go with van nuys. and valley taco trucks destroy LA. first off, i dont think theres a joint in the NE valley that doesnt have hand made tortillas. i know it seems petty but it makes a huge difference. they also do al vapor which is pretty hard to come by in town. you can play it safe and stay along the hills and canyonlands. there is definitely ass along ventura blvd, its like the "not-yet-famous" set and tv douchebags which is just fine to gawk at. but im partial to the dirtier NE valley. its like the place in movies where mobsters dump bodies and torture snitches in salvage yards. hit up pacoima, sunland/sun valley if thats your bag. its definitely an integral part of the socal lifestyle.

  8. im a firm believer in the fact that it aint a real vacation unless you break a few rules. drink a lil too much, carelessly flirt with a stranger, and for god sakes eat some meat! :)

that being said, i had the unfortunate task of traveling in df with a fairly devout vegan last i went. its not impossible to eat, but i wouldnt count on doing as the locals do if you stick to that vegan bit. youll want to stay in those white mexican areas like napoles, roma, or polanco if youre hardcore about it. otherwise its a lot of fruit cocktail and street peanuts for you. which isnt a bad thing, per se, the fruit there is way better cuz its not some genetically enhanced high yield frankenstein fruit, its actual fruit how dirtmother gaia intended. you can slip by with street tacos made from cacti, or bean tacos de canasta but youll get some residual animal fat mixed in there if not outright dipped in drippings. and the person i went with swore the vegetarian pozole wasnt made from animal broth, i highly doubt it tho.

museum-wise, there seems to be museums everywhere you go. siqueros polyforum in napoles is dope and theres a lot of hipster galleries in roma. personally i think mexico city gets more interesting the further outside of city center you get, but you gotta be kinda daring, and fluent in chilango.

  9. u dudes ever had a legit cemitas with that herbal leaf thing in it? it makes a pretty big difference. that and the cheese. they must pasturize cheese different or something cuz the cheese is a million times better on el otra lado. even if u get mexican cheese stateside, its never the same.

and dude that mentioned banh mi my tho. thats my joint! definitely the best on valley. bread is usually pretty good. the secret is the peanuts!

  10. the dude seems nice, i just wish these knife dudes would get to the point instead of blabbering on for 15 minutes.

check out stephen schmalhaus knife reviews. theyre well crafted and researched, and he's got great taste in knifes. at least in my opinion. in any case, theyre well made and interesting videos.
