  1. haha that was the first movie we watched when I got in on the whole thing early last year

it's still one of my favourites though I'm not sure how much of that is just nostalgia for how much I used to fiend on it as a teenager

  2. dangerous path man - it's easier sitting in your room alone doing fa but do that too long and you stagnate and start fucking hating yourself and feeling left behind and like you're worthless and not going to be anything compared to anyone else. what happened to me anyway.

gotta stay engaged with something - if you can do that in your room (creating etc) then power to you, but you should get some sun and exercise and social stimulation sometimes as well. hope your friends are cool. good luck man

  3. could be wrong but I'm pretty sure by the time you can see files in dropbox, they've already synced to your comp ie damage is already done RE bandwidth issues.

afaik the program just updates your hardrive in realtime with stuff stored in a cloud. similarly, if you change anything, it changes in the cloud and therefore on everyone else's HDDs as well (hence why we had issues with people taking files out of the dropbox w/o realising)

  4. I'm starting to think I'm the stupid one here and there is something about taking my sweet time..

I mean, don't kill yourself or anything obvs, but course you should work hard

hopefully your workplace never gets scaled down too drastically, but if it does happen and management are any good at their jobs, ideally you'll still be employed by the end of it and this guy won't be

  5. all those a pretty similar to me.  Probably explains why I don't like being around trains and large bodies of water.

wife used to sit on her hands in the car as a little kid cos she would think about how easy it would be to grab to wheel and cause an accident.

I did the same thing with a pocket knife once as a ~10yo, just sat staring at it for like 20 mins thinking about how easy it would be to open a vein/artery and possibly bleed out. ended up freaking myself out and giving it to mum. still get those kinda "wah mortality" moments now and then

  6. just started hannibal as well. loving the imagery and colour work. loved the first two episodes, up to 5 now and adoration is fading a bit...

totally get what you mean by the brutality NW - the mushroom garden and angel-maker episodes actually got me going "jesus" out loud with their crime-scene reveals.

  7. meme is a fairly old word. recently it's increasingly starting to be used in isolation to describe an internet meme, ie demotivational posters, rage guy comics etc (to the point where dictionaries are including a new definition) but I guess at its basic level a meme is just an idea communicated between people within a culture, whether a country or a group of sadguys on the internet. it's generic as hell as a definition

anyway, enough of the semantic discussion on internet gifs

  8. There are definitely some that legitimately want to help but they're a minority.

making some massive generalisations here man. (speaking from v. limited experience) I must have gotten pretty lucky as all the counsellors/psychs I've spoken to have been great - and most have treated meds as a part of a balanced regime, if not a last resort

Have you seen dozens of these and they're all uncaring douchebags or are you just pulling this out your arse based on cynical social stereotypes?

also, from a purely selfish perspective (seeing these guys helped me) - who cares if they're only in it for the money or whatever - if seeing a counsellor helps you in any way then take advantage of that shit all you can. if not then obvs find someone/something which can.

edit: that being said I agree with your point about finding something you're passionate about and putting energy into it - at least to show yourself that you can enjoy, put effort into, and be good at something.

  9. AFAIK/was told by a psych, it is possible to reprogram the body into a more depressed base state.

I spent a couple years just getting more and more down and feeling more like I was a useless pos who wasn't going anywhere. Wasn't like that all the time, but an increasing percentage of the time since 2010. basically felt like I was marking time and was never going to progress beyond the uni student/casual job phase of my life.

supposedly through this period I was more or less teaching my body a certain physiological way to react to various stimulus, so in theory it was becoming easier to sink into depressive thinking/stay there and much harder to stay/respond positive(ly). not sure how much of this effect is chemical and how much mental

since seeing help and going on SSRIs in early 2013, I've been getting better and have really been making the effort to try and reprogram my responses and thinking. exercise has been the main medication for me - as well as being forgiving of myself and working towards larger and larger goals and projects. came off meds june/july 2013.

tdlr; anecdotal evidence about the physiological effects of depression/my depression

  10. mining engineering was big money in aus over the last few years - massive resources boom. if you were willing to work in the middle of nowhere on a fly-in fly-out (fifo) roster (often like 8days on, 6days off, or 2 weeks on, 1 week off) you could be making six figures straight out of uni without even trying.

Had friends on $300k+ six months after graduation - not high flyers either.

at the height of it you could be making six figs as a kitchen hand or unskilled construction labour etc - as long as you were willing to work shitty f-i-f-o rosters. dying off now though.

  11. friend is giving me an old steel road bike. Bit of rust through the frame - might get it sandblasted and powdercoated or something similar.

not sure if I should try to build a bike on the cheap or trade in on a second hand alum road bike (not ridden much road/for a v. long time and haven't done any building before). components on it look shot to hell.

on one hand I'd defs be interested in trying my hand at a build. on the other I feel like maybe having a bike to ride in the short term is a better option...
