  1. That's bizarre.

Can you double check on how it's being sorted?

Right/control+click on the folder in the dock and see how it's sorting things.

Maybe try changing it to a different sort type and see what happens.

One last thing to try is using Disk Utility

Run 'Repair Permissions' and see if that fixes anything.

EDIT: Also: why is my usericon in your downloads folder, HUH???

    :)

  2. more of a mac OS question.. been bugging me for months

i vaguely remember accidentally removing my downloads folder from my dock.. i replaced it shortly thereafter from macHD / users / me. whilst it operates fine, the preview file almost always remains as a blank white sheet (second from right, below), which is not the most recently added file. i have it set to 'date added' / 'stack' / 'grid view'. what's up?

Does that file show up when you click the folder open?

If so, right click and get info on it - if it's not useful - trash it.

It's possible it has a incorrect or corrupted creation date or download date.

If it doesn't show up - then that's a little weird.

Second thing to try is resetting the Dock.

This will reset your dock to the default state - it might remove apps/etc that you've added.

    Follow the directions here:

    http://superuser.com/questions/30236/how-to-reset-dock-items-in-mac-os-x

(if you're unfamiliar or uncomfortable with using Terminal after you've trashed your preferences just restart)

  3. cop the current macbook pro or wait for the 2012 release?

If you don't have an immediate need - I'd wait. The next one will be massively redesigned, much thinner and will lose its DVD drive.

It will also potentially have a smaller HD which will be an SSD.

it give me no error except i can't open ibook. anw its iphone 4 , the os 5.0.1 and yes its jailbroken. maybe i need to restore it? i tried all the 3 options that u gave me and none is work. its so lazy for me to restore anw the error is

    Configuration Error

There is a problem with the configuration of your iphone. Please restore with itunes or redownload ibooks

This is just a general rule but . . . if you jailbreak it - don't be surprised if something breaks.

Restore it to normal function or go to a Cydia forum to ask for help.

Sorry if I come off as a dick - but if you want things to work correctly and you're not highly technically savvy, don't jailbreak.

  4. hi, i need to ask something. somehow i can't open any pdf file in my iphone 4.The ibook itself refuse to open. it stated something is wrong with the configuration. try to delete and download a new one yet it doesn't do any good. any idea? do i really need to restore my phone?

Does it give you an error?

More specific information about what goes wrong, what errors show up, etc is helpful.

Which phone, which version of iOS.

If iBooks itself refuses to open . . . that's not normal.

Here are a few things you can try

    1. Try killing the saved state of iBooks

double-press the home button to bring up the task bar, touch and hold on iBooks until the delete button show up

tap that to clear the saved state

    2. Restart your phone

hold down the home button until the red slider shows up, slide it.

    Phone will shut down

Hold the 'sleep' button to turn it back on

    3. Reinstall iBooks

Touch and hold on the iBooks icon until it wiggles, tap the X and delete it (hit 'OK' on the pop up to confirm)

Redownload from the app store and see if that fixes it.

    4. Back up your iPhone and restore it.

Make sure you have a full recent backup either on your computer or iCloud.

CHECK AGAIN AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FULL BACKUP AVAILABLE

Wipe your phone: Settings> General> Reset > Reset All Settings

    Confirm that

You'll have a re-set phone and then you can restore from iCloud/Backup

Caveats: If you have jailbroken your phone and/or installed Cydia all bets are off. Many things could be wrong in that case.

If none of these things work . . . it might be time to bring it to the Apple Store as there is probably something wrong with the hardware.

Also: its possible the PDF you are trying to open is corrupted. In that case . . . well, you wont be able to open it.

  5. My budget is roughly 6k, would a maxed out iMac be better for 1080p video rendering and hardcore photoshopping or would a middle class Mac Pro set up ? Also is it worth it to wait for the next revisions with the Ivy Bridge set ups ?

Depends on what software package you're planning to use.

Avid/FCP7/Premiere support hardware acceleration cards. If you are going to use a card - get a Mac Pro.

Otherwise, buy the fastest iMac with the SSD and 2TB harddrive.

Skip the RAM and buy that for significantly less aftermarket (just dont get the cheap stuff)

Ivy Bridge is still a couple months off, it seems. Depends on your timeline.

Photoshop will SCREAM with an SSD as your main drive and scratch disk.

Mac Pro. Especially since there are rumblings that apple is going to discontinue them.

This won't happen. At least, not yet.

Too many people still rely on them.

The next revision may be the last, however.

Thunderbolt is removing the need for internal slot upgrades.

  6. i have a macbook pro 2.2ghz i7 i bought sometime in august - sometimes it says it has No battery and won't work without the charger, but sometimes it will be completely fine. happens in between sleeping or just starting up. tried googling some solutions to it, but nothing seems consistent. halp

Follow the directions on this page to reset the PMU. (yours is a non-removeable, so follow the second set or directions)

This might help . . . if not - you've got an internal battery or deeper PMU issue and it'll have to be Genius-level support. :/

  7. My top reasons to buy 'the new iPad':

    - You want to present work on your iPad (such as Photography/design, etc)

    - you have kinda bad eyesight and you'd love an improved screen

    - you're a hardcore iPad gamer and you want a beautiful-er screen and more 3D power

    - you've been waiting to buy one—just do it

I plan on getting one sometime this year for presenting design work, trips, couch web-surfing, etc.

  8. Yeah you can put an sd card in a computer.

    1) I got the camera connection kit to dump pics onto the iPad and clear space on the sd card when I'm on the road

    2) the pics, no matter what format, transfer to the iPad successfully

    3) they then go to their own folder. Different transfers create a new folder every time so if you load 3 sets of pics, you'll get 3 import events. They are not stored in the "camera roll" that all other iPad pics, screenshots, and photostream access.

    4) when plugging the iPad into a Mac, a pc, your grandma, or any other device ALL of them only recognize the camera roll (default) folder, even when trying to look at the iPad as an external drive rather than through iTunes. I am looking for a way to find the other folders/pics.

    5) so far, the only way I can retrieve the pictures is to individually email them.

    6) I'm assuming apple thought this through when they released the card reader and that there's some sort of solution.

    7) fuck it, this is pointless

    Happened across a solution:

Install Dropbox on your iPad (https://www.dropbox.com/)

Use the in app signup (if you dont have an account already)

    Install on your PC

On your iPad, import images into Dropbox and patiently wait for them to sync up to the web and back down to your PC.

This won't be fast - but it will work.

  9. I'm installing my developer preview now, any thoughts?

I hope you don't have important data. ;)

However, their betas are generally pretty stable.

i wanna buy another macbook charger to leave at my studio. i'm already swinging 17" everyday, gotta reduce weight any way i can.

thoughts on third-party (ebay et al.) charger or should pay up, shut up for genuine?

Since I don't think Apple' licenses chargers/batteries for 3rd party - they're probably Chinese knockoffs which don't have to go through the same safety/quality inspections.

I wouldn't buy 3rd party. They're not that outrageous - I had two. Definitely very convenient.

    This thread is like

hey apple guy blah blah blah

apple guy: hmm, dunno, works pretty good on a mac. are you using windows? that's probably what's wrong

Isn't that the general rule for tech support everywhere?

That it's probably 'their' fault - not yours?

Maybe I should change the thread title to 'Ask an Apple nerd anything except about things that aren't related to Apple'?

  10. great advice apple nerd

I mean you're SOL because Apple doesn't make iPhoto for Windows. Using an Apple iPad with a Windows machine means that in some aspects you will have a lesser experience than you would with a Mac. Their software apps/OS are designed to work together.

On a Mac you should be able pull everything off via iPhoto.

I'm not even 100% sure that anything would show up in iPhoto - but i find it likely. Can you create another folder on the iPad, move pictures to it and get that to be viewable on Windows?

The camera connection kit's purpose is to remove the need for a desktop computer/laptop - which is part of why it might not work as smoothly on a PC. It was designed for people who don't have a camera - not a temporary JPG dump.

Honestly, there are cheaper options made especially for dumping memory cards.

Unfortunately, part of the iPad's design is to hide away the file structure from the user - which is part of why it's difficult to find where things are stored.

did apple deliberately block Android from syncing with iPhoto?

    1. "Android" is on your phone - so it would be a second piece of software on your Mac that would sync the photos.

    2. No idea. If possible, it probably wouldn't be worth the effort for Google since they want you on the internet looking at their ads.

I dont know how/if Android syncs and I doubt it syncs with anythign that isnt Google-owned - right?

They probably dont care about photosyncing to anything they dont own.

  11. k i have a question for you. when i import pictures from my iphone 4s to my computer via photostream or cable they appear all black. why

    Hmmmm - ok that's a weird one.

There are many possible solutions - I'd try right clicking a black photo in iPhoto and select "Show in Finder" and see if you can open it in Preview or Safari.

If it's black in either of those - you know it's getting transferred improperly.

If it works - then something is wrong with iPhoto. There might be an option to rebuild the database or something.

HOWEVER - if you're on a PC - all bets are off and you're probably screwed.

it is with a dslr. i use the camera kit to import pics from the SD card to the ipad. the problem is that they create and import to a new folder on the ipad (not into the camera roll where all screenshots and other pics go)

itunes, photostream, and even hooking it up to a PC and opening it as a drive don't recognize anything unless it's in the camera roll and there doesn't seem to be a way to import to that destination. basically, the pics just get stuck on the ipad unless i either delete them individually or email them to myself.

    You have Windows?

    You might be SOL.

  12. The pc version has been unable to cope with large library size for as long as i can remember. i've had 100+ gb of music pretty much since iTunes came out and even with the most powerful of computer, it has always been slow and very buggy. For some reason, the mac version is much more stable and faster.

Anyone having trouble with music on iphone / ipad since getting iTunes Match? i have an iPad 1 and if i turn on showing full library (would be 100% easier if switch was in music vs. in setting where it currently is btw), it crashes every single time i open music, very annoying. Ipad 1 hardware is probably part of the problem, but pretty annoying nonetheless.

It could be dependancies in Windows that are unstable, it could be bugs in iTunes, or it could just be poor programming by Apple.

iTunes is much more integrated into OS X since Apple owns both.

That being said - 100GB is a LOT of music and I don't think you can honestly say you listen to all of that :)

    Pairing down is always good.

No idea about iTunes Match - that's a pretty new thing and I don't know much about it.

  13. when i use the camera connection kit to import to the ipad, i can't seem to get them off the ipad. when it's connected to the computer, and even with photo stream, the only album that works is the camera roll. imported pics get put in a different folder and aren't accessible and the only way to get rid of them is to individually delete them. i was hoping to use it to dump photos off my camera and then get them on the computer from the ipad but it doesn't seem to work that way.

is there a way around this?

Hmmm - a little difficult to tell what might be going on here but you should be able to import them into iPhoto by dragging, importing or otherwise.

I don't have a lot of experience with that as I shoot mostly DSLR or just use the iPhone camera.

One thing you might try is connecting your iPad via cable and then using 'Image Capture' to view the pics on your iPad

You should be able to copy them off to wherever you want from there.

2009 MacBook, just the little light on the magnetic connector

    Ahh - that's probably not a problem - unless it's not charging.

Any fraying where the cord meets the magsafe connector?

Is is the 'straight on' magSafe connection where the cord points right into the computer, or is it the perpendicular one where the cord comes in alongside the computer's edge?

The early ones where the cord pointed straight to the computer had major issues with fraying and there is acurrently a class action suit about it.

    http://www.adaptersettlement.com/

  14. is it normal for the lights on power supplies to fail? (it still charges)

    Hmmm - no. That's abnormal.

The light on the power supply itself doesnt light up? Or the MagSafe connection light?

Or are you talking about a battery?

I'm assuming a laptop - which model and how old?

Why the fuck does itunes suck so much?

I don't have too many problems with it.

Are you on OS X or Windows?

I have no experience with it on Windows - it runs pretty smooth on the Mac.

If you are on a Mac - download the "Combo Updater" for the version of OS X you have (if you have Lion, download the 10.7.3 Combo Updater) and install over the top.

I would highly recommend downloading the Combo Updater from http://apple.com/support/downloads/ instead of the typical Software Update

  15. are you an apple genius?

No. I am not an Apple Genius - but I probably know as much as some of them.

Please tell me the iPhone 5 won't have a bigger screen? I don't want a bigger screen.

iPhone 5 probably won't have a bigger screen - if it does, it will be only slightly bigger while keeping the phone the same size (less bezel around the edges)

current is 3.5", iPhone 5 will either be the same or move up slightly to 4" but the phone will be the same size. It will basically be a screen with the mic at the top and the home button at the bottom.

I REALLY hope that the new home button is not electro-static (touch) and retains its current mechanical button design.

The Apple displays that had electro static buttons were terrible.
