  1. I was going to get the Brother 2340CV, but I got a better deal on this one. If I was to ever get another machine, it'd definitely be a Union Special. They look similar but they aren't the same. For now though, it's going to save me from using a tailor if I can't get my jeans hemmed at the store I buy them from.

  2. Here's a pic:

Next on my list are a proper chainstitch foot and some quality polycore thread.

A few tailors I've spoken to said that it's better to have a lockstitch on the hem. Because with a chain stitch, all it takes is one loose thread and the whole thing can unravell. Even with this machine, it recommends using a needle and tying off the chainstitch properly after it's been removed from the macine. There was a big debate between chain and lockstitch (the infamous Jomon thread off the other SF). All I know is that chainstitch looks a heck of a lot better than lock.

  3. The one on the bottom is a picture of the hem of my Denime. The one on the top is a chainstitch that I did on my new (used) Bernina. The stitch length is a little shorter and the tension is a little weaker than an industrial Union Special that the Denime was sewn on. Not exaclty the same, but at least now I can hem my own jeans at home, since no one in Sydney does a chainstitch hem. As far as I know, Richie at Another Inch did his chainstich on a domestic as well (before his gf took her machine back).

  4. One of these is off my Denime, which (to my belief) is sewn with a Union Special. The other one was done on a Bernina Funlock 009DCC. Can you tell which is which? (Of course anyone who actually owns a pair of Denime could tell straight away, but I couldn't find that colour in a 30w. I had to fiddle with the contrast a little because of the flash.

  5. Our new exclsive Cone Denim. White Oak Green Selvage, in celebration of the 100 year anniversary of the Cone White Oak plant. Teaser shot...

I was wondering when you were going to make a pair of denim with these. I choked a little on all the drool that started to accumulate. I'd be interested in the straight cut. Prices?

  6. Nice! Are those some heavier denim also? And 36" inseam -when did that happend? I needn't know that... :D

BiG says that they are 13.5oz, though they feel heavier than that. Don't know if it's the starch in it or not. Other 13oz jeans don't feel as heavy as these. Not as heavy as a 15oz pair of sammies though.

  7. so the negative would be no roping. i could've sworn i've seen roping on some nudies before.

    anyways, thanks thetrustcan :D

Jean hems will rope over time with any kind of stitch. It doesn't have to be chainstitched. However, the roping effect is nicer and more pronounced on chainstitched jeans (esp those done on a Union special, due to the different tension in the thread compared to that of a modern machine). Or so I've been told. I can't find anyone in Australia that does a chainstitched hem, so I normally settle for a regular hem job at my local.

  8. Fullcount 105NA. Natural Indigo. I wasn't going to buy any more jeans for this year, but I was kicking myself for missing the green cast 15th anniversary pair, and I wasn't going to miss this one. So I bought it ahead of time, probably going to keep in nice and folded in the closet until sometime next year (probably when I get bored of wearing my WH contest jeans). Props to chutes for the proxy.

The denim is just awesome. The natural indigo is light, almost a blue-grey with different hues of blue streaking vertically, sort of like the denim on a SC40400, but more subtle. The cut is not as loose as I thought it would be (definitely cut slimmer than say the SDA D01). It's definitely made me rethink the cuts for FCs. I might get a 1101 next time and not a 1108 like I planned to a few months ago. Buttons up well raw, I won't be too worried unless the waist shrinks more than an inch post soak (and I've got my bakertowne if I need to stretch it out a little). Some pics.

  9. I have a thin rubber topy's sole glued onto the leather of my RMW Henley's (even though RMW recommends not putting anything on the sole). I figured I'd rather wear out a piece of $10 rubber than the actual leather sole. I'd just replace the rubber sole as it wears out (and still hasn't worn out yet, even after about 3 years of sporatic wear).

  10. I'm using a proxy to get the jeans, and was wondering exactly with the sizes, a few weeks ago people were saying size down 1, is it still size down one? I wear 34" dukes, and was planning on getting 33" 710's, since they will strech...hmm

I wear a 34 in Dukes and wear a 33 in 710s. Though this is lot 9, and if the rumours of them being smaller for the current run is true, I'd say get the same size or even one size up. The 33 was as tight as anything when I first got them. Took me about half a day to button up to the top. Stretched out over the week to a good fit.

  11. Here is a picture of the cosmetic damage. Apparently, the person sewing the boots went about 8-9 stitches past the welt and had to pull them out. It's the only thing wrong with the boot and it's barely noticeable.

    .

That's exactly how my "new" Alden 405s looked when I got them from the Aldenshop. The ones that were described as "rough hewn sewing expected on a work boot." I got my full refund after a round of complaints, though they probably won't want to sell to me again.

  12. Tom, I think thats a popular look in Japan. what is it... double leather and the cats paw which looks pretty thick. They are listed at 44000 yen which is about $400 I guess. I thought lone wolf were more pricey than that.

I quite like the look of them myself.

They look a lot like the semi-dress. Of course, with the semi-dress, you can send your measurements and foot tracings in, which is the next best thing to actually trying them on. I'd be too scared to try my luck buying boots off Rakuten.

  13. heads up ... tis the season..

    http://www.shermanbrothers.com/product.php?ItemId=5027&ProductId=7869

    has Indys at 10% off...

    And I think free shipping...

They don't ship Aldens overseas. *^&$&!!!

And before anyone mentions it, I burnt my bridge with the Aldenshop SF over a dispute about (what I clearly saw as) a defect and what the owner thought was a "normal finishing of a handmade work boot." It was the stitching on the inside welt on the right boot. The stitching cut into the leather sole and a small 1/8 inch cut into the leather upper. It had to be a defect, because the inside left boot was completely normal. I complained, returned them, got a full refund (including return shipping), but I suspect, won't be able to buy anything from that store ever again (because for some reason they didn't see the defect that I did).

Does anyone know of an online store that sells the Alden 405 that ships overseas? Thanks for any help in advance.

    just got these....

russell moccasins boot..brown elephant hide leather...so comfortable...the way these aer made...doesnt look like wear will hurt these too much

So envious. What are those, Art Carter Chukkas, or Country Chukkas with a different sole option? I just put in an order for a pair of Art Carters myself (due in March of next year).

  15. I waited for about 12 hours after the final daily bump with no msgs, and then now I get two people interested. Well, they're off the market now. For the last week and a half, I had no idea why these weren't getting picked up. They're awesome jeans. I would have paid BiG's current price of $220 to get them. I've decided to keep them after all. I just sat down with them, touching the denim, looking at the rust spots on the buttons. Everything about these jeans reek authentic vintage. Even the guy I'm having these altered by was impressed.
