  1. I get confused by this frequently on the internet, but apparently people from other countries refer to "going to college" as "going to university". Somebody even tried to explain to me that theres a difference some places between college and university.

In the US since theres really no difference, that would be broken english... other places it actually makes sense.

well, i'm in america and went to a state university which was made up of different colleges--the college i was enrolled under was liberal arts and sciences. ...and then there are colleges that exist outside of the larger university institution.

go to college when you know what you want to do--or audit a shitload of classes (at my old uni anyone w/ 25$ could take a class for no credit) to figure out what you like. don't waste your money, but don't get trapped in your shitty job for 5 or even 10+ years because its safe and all that...and even then, trying out different jobs is better than staying in one place or floundering in undergrad. and if you got to have a shitty job and kinda want to go back to school--work for a university (you get to go back to school for free).

  2. there is little difference- if you are a power user on one you can get an automatic invite to the other. I am not a power user :( would like a waffles one :P

where did you read that? maybe you can beg for invites in the PU board, but it's definitely not automatic.

waffles v. what? in the last few searches i compared, they are about the same, but at times what beats out waffles on diversity (at least for OSTs) while waffles has a lot depth (discogs/rips), etc.

there'll be a bigger difference between the two places when What transitions to their new site code which they wrote themselves.

  3. anybody here have experience in this area? i'm considering going to a cc for 2 years then transferring to a university. not an issue of grades, more an issue of saving money.

it's a good idea. i went to state university, but from what cc transfers told me--teachers at CCs are there to actually teach rather than primarily focus on research/writing (which brings in grants/money for the uni). and the only problems i heard often were about transfering credits (so save all of your CC class syllabi) and having all of the difficult class requirements concentrated in a few semesters.

oh, and a lot of my non-transfer classmates who wanted to get out early would go to CCs during summer session for gen-eds...it's a really smart way to save money.

...and you may miss out on that college experience you see in the movies--dorming, etc.

  4. I think cyberpunk is cool but, its punk element notwithstanding, i feel like it comes from a white, military/industrial/academic trained and employed, upper middle class perspective's reaction to techno/social change. that's a clumsy way of putting it, but its late and im in a hurry.

what about cyberhiphop [lame word, just making the point of comparison] as a new or different cultural reaction to techno/social change? i know of a few examples, and the kanye/daft punk performance at the grammys hinted at an aesthetic combination... though that was mostly superficial.... but still

blah blah blah, just throwing that out there

i don't agree, but i'd rather flip it over to Octavia E. Butler rather than "cyberhiphop"...especially if that is being interpreted mostly as what kanye west has been up to...coz he sucks. a lot.

Also, from what I understand "cyberpunk" was criticized from the get-go as being way too ambitious of a word/concept. it was spoof'd and ridiculed. and all these spinoffs 'genres' are more or less named such to be cheeky (e.g. splatterpunk).

  5. rejoice?

...torque/britney's toxic music video director + crap anakin skywalker...they just shouln't do it--especially if chris cunningham originally wanted to direct. it's going to suck.

and a recent film example of steampunk is a lot of the tech in The Golden Compass

I'd make a list and shit but I'm too dead atm. Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Delicatessen, Galaxy Express 999, Serial Experiments Lain, Cowboy Bebop, blaaaahblahblahblah.

  6. reread your post. you were writing directly to me about my alleged "white world view."

white-centered. sorry i wasn't explicit enough for you.

I never said anyone was better. I never said one person was more oppressed than another. You're putting words into MY mouth. Stop hoisting your dead argument back up onto cheap crutches. How was I ignoring anybody of "color" (whoever they are. unfortunately, this label is very out of date and was used to refer to people outside of the realm of whiteness by both whites and non-whites to alienate them from or unite them against whiteness. good going, genius.), and why should I address them? in the context of YOUR ACCUSATIONS why address any plight other than that of certain white ethnic groups in a thread titled "white people?" Also, when did I say that whites possessed a level of self-reflection that other groups lacked? you're choosing to see my post as racist so that you can justify argument for arguments sake.
you said, "at least white people ....x,y,z." that is what i was responding to...
Your heated attack left you open to criticism. If you don't want your bad morals and mob-mentality bigotry to surface, then i suggest that you stuff it back into your closet. that is, unless your closet is VERY FULL. Which i'll "assume" is probably the case as I didn't defend a single thing about "white people" and in no way claimed that any race was "better" in any way. That's simply how you saw it because it appears that to you, any positive or neutral comment about white people is directly linked with some kind of perverse racism.
heated attack? mob mentality? bigotry? sorry your world is so insulated if i come off as militant to you. and no, it's not how i simply saw it--it's how shoddily you wrote, "at least white people...".
Again, putting words into my mouth. In the second paragraph you actually proved my point. thanks for that. Also, if you actually took the time to read what i wrote, i never said anybody was a victim or perpetrator here. you were able to acknowledge the role of the ruling classes in all of this, which rendered your previous argument completely false. good job.
Uh, ok, so you just added that stuff about Romans, the Church, and the Ottoman empire to fill up some space online? No real point there to make? Haha, you and the half white guy I neg'd and had flame back at me are funny folks....y'know, taking stuff personally and saying yer point is made w/o actually proving anything.

Another epic response with very little to say... :]

  7. Talk about being as transparent as ghost paper.

    "YOUR near exclusive world view."

Well, it appears as though you're the racist, assuming that I'm white because my non-leathal comment (which in no way defended "whiteness") struck a nerve.

When I wrote YOUR I meant your...you directly not white ppl generally.

"Who the fuck do you think brings that shit up"

You've got to be kidding me. Maybe you should stop banging away angrily on the keyboard and read about an entire northern european world which was completely erased through genocide and intellectual ethnic cleansing by the romans, the catholic church, the ottoman empire, moores, and countless other invaders into eastern and central europe throughout recorded history. white people aren't innocent, but they're no more guilty than anybody else. As a former history major, I've noticed that white people, while sometimes flawed in perception of their history, have a rather firm grip on it. The only people really "bringing up" criticisms containing your level of ANGER are those people requesting the complete eradication of white ethnic identity and observation of complete blame for all of the worlds problems. Traditionally, we call these people 1) Racists and 2) Propagandists or 3) Paranoid.

You're stuck in the 90s with the "who's more oppressed" whining. Everyone anywhere has gotten owned by someone else, but to make broad sweeping statements of how much better white folks are because they are occassionally reminded and supposedly know about their atrocities is ignorant. In your statement you ignore the people of color, poor folks, outspoken women, true white allies, etc who make these things issues for all of us and question the 'master narrative'/status quo/default. This isn't a spotaneous process that proves how much better white folks are coz they come w/ a guilt default--which is how you framed it earlier.

Also, you attack white people and "their" perception of "normalcy."

Considering the fact that normalcy is a relative notion and the fact that todays society views normalcy as old-fashioned and essentially wrong in many ways... You choose to view normalcy as white. Therefor you relate whiteness to being inherently bad which is itself relative to your own insecurity and confusion. You make sense of your confusion through an expression of racial bias (which is very easy and very common). You made out well, because you found an entire community of people with the same simple answer to all of the worlds problems. Congratulations.

Next time, ask questions rather than assuming things about me, e.g. most of the paragrah above.

Normalcy...you underestimate normalcy's importance and widespread reach..and if you think that normalcy isn't white in US society (even w/ Will Smiths)--google the "doll test".

Since the human brain works via shorthand/seeing patterns/groupings it's easier to simplify, but there are motives for why certain entities (elite, media, masses) in a society would want to manipulate perceptions. And an example of this process is racialization which can work for or against anybody. For example this anti-Latino "invasion" sentiment occured 150+ years ago but against Asians, and during the depression with Okies in California.

Race doesn't really matter it's the process... and this me.me.me.I'm the victim!!! stuff is stupid, misses the point and is ultimately a big waste of time: "Are black ppl more oppressed than women?!" is a classic example of how the suffering/oppression dick measuring contest. So what's your point of white ppl suffering too...so what?

For future reference--if you'd like a more current example of some white folks being "oppressed" you can make a really shallow argument w/ South Africa or Zimbabwe.

  8. Spot on. Though, tell me which Europeans civilizations you're talking about and name a single civilization in the entire world that didn't rape and pillage to simply establish its own identity. It seems that white people, whoever they are, are the only people willing to stop and reflect on the atrocities of their ruling elite. Oh wait, with the exception of jews. There are a lot of self-hating jews.

Why do white people see so many ufo's?

Please... Fuck white guilt, but fuck white ppls' sense of entitlement and normalcy even more and your near exclusive white view on the world. White ppl are the only ppl to think of their own atrocities? Who the fuck do you think brings that shit up or are the catalyst for those conversations -- the people of color privileged white folks shit upon literally, physically, or intellectually (to include the liberal do-gooder still racist assholes).

    ...bleah.

  9. I have searched high and low for any info on Jean shop denim and have had a hard time finding much for the ladies fits. Are there any ladies who own jean shop raw's on here?

Isoform you said you tried on the unisex cut...how did that fit on you size wise? Did you have to size down a bunch like the guys?

I found some for a really good price but sizing seems hard to figure out and I can not try them on anywhere near me.

They run true to size, but i was able to size down 1 keeping in mind that they'll stretch to size.

  10. ebay Q: are there a lot of money order/wired money/insured money sent via envelope scams on eBay? sounds like it can turn out like the popular type of checks scam on Craigslist. ...just curious how a money order scam will look like...

  11. i laughed at loud at the comment that the screenplay was "too minimal--it could've been written by a 15 year old."

whatever. not much else to say other than there's too much hype around there will be blood, no country, atonement, and certainly around juno.

  12. but they do fade nicely

my friend had joey overdrives a year ago (in the garbage now from sk8 sessions)

and they faded quite noticabley after the first wash from 6 months of wear or so

    can you post pics?

  13. bums who live around the underpass and block drunks are all friends in the house two doors down. at least the crack house is a few blocks away. the newly moved-in yuppie and/or hipster white people are probably afraid of them.

there are/were so many mexicans and puerto ricans in my neighborhood that i thought as a kid that the logan square monument (a column w/ an eagle on top) was some kind of mexican thing when in fact it has something to do with the illinois bicentenial.
