  1. any of you guys (in LA area) wanna buy my Illadelph? I'd rather sell it to one of you than a craigslist rando

Illadelph straight shot, 19.5" tall, 7mm glass, camo label $350

I'm including the Pro Duffle by Ryot gear, a really heavy duty and functional bag designed specifically for bongs

I change the water every few hits, clean w 99% alc very often, rinse it w Brita water to avoid waterspots... trust, this shit is clean

  3. i graduated with a design degree (media/graphic/web/etc) in 2010 and went on the hunt for agency work, but besides a four month internship at a product design firm, it was a struggle to find any legit jobs. an old friend from middle/high school eventually offered me a job at his car dealership and i jumped on board immediately—being an in-house creative director seemed better than an intern or jr position at an agency. I've been at the company for ~20 months now and gained a ton of experience so far: creating a brand, dealing with vendors, art directing freelancers... basically having creative freedom and a decent-sized budget. but in the end, i've been working in a silo—i'm the one creative in a team of four. the quality and efficiency of my work is plateauing because I'm only getting feedback from salesmen and GMs (who i really enjoy working with but really are in a different mindset, professionally).

all of this, plus the drama of mixing work with friends, plus the fact that i can't ever see myself engaging with "car culture" although i really do appreciate them as design objects, is why i'm going back on the job hunt... I'm leaving my current position as creative director to go find an entry-level job at a design agency, preferably branding or web. it's really sad to leave a company that i was so deeply rooted in, but i feel like i'm back on the right career path. currently preparing my resume and portfolio; applying this week; hopefully getting hired in october...

i should prob just copy paste this all into my cover letter

  4. i'm trying this thing based on REM cycles where i sleep in 3, 6, or 9 hour blocks. (7:30am ideal wake up = 10:30, 1:30, or 4:30 bed time. if i miss the 4:30 mark i skip sleep that night and aim for a 9 or 12 hour block the next.) it's been a bit over a week since i started it and my internal alarm clock is usually able to wake me up within a 5-10 min margin of error.

not sure yet if it's making me feel better during the day, but i wake up much less groggy/grumpy and i'm able to maintain my insomniac ways...

  5. a concept/idea (ie, the mission statement of a brand) can be expressed through graphic design (ie, advertising)

i'm talking about conceptual in the design sense; conceptual art is a whole different story...

  6. get into interactive design. Lots of mobile work out there.

on this note, check out this vid on UX/interactive design, there's some great interviews from notable agencies/companies.

also, younghee jung is so wifeable

  7. both of those just look like illustrations rather than designs (let's see some logos and layouts and other applied designs).

anyway i think it's kinda pointless arguing over which of these two random works is "better" when they're just different styles: vectory/geometric vs lo-fi/MSPainty

  8. i'm in a similar position as you, mmfood (in-house creative director, looking to move to agency work eventually)

here's what i think: no, you don't need more schooling to get this kind of job. but yes, you do need it to excel at your job and work for a credible agency. in my opinion, it would be worth the money. in fact, i'm tryna go to Art Center in a year or two for Media Design and i'm willing to go deeper into debt for it if i need to, because i see it as an investment. but keep in mind, i value education very highly, and there's lots of designers who argue in favor of work experience over schooling...

are you trying to get into more hands-on, dirty work designing or more creative direction and design management?

  9. here's a pretty legit list of schools, most of which are considered "top tier": http://www.businessi...ls-2012-11?op=1

AH+, i saw in the fonts thread that Columbia is the school you're considering transferring to? based on their website and student portfolios, it seems pretty average/mediocre. check out that list, cuz there's a few Chicago-based schools on there if you're tied down to that city

edit: here's another, more global, list of design schools: http://images.businessweek.com/ss/09/09/0930_worlds_best_design_schools/index.htm

  10. AH+, if you really want to get into graphic design, don't waste your time/money on shitty graphic design trade schools. do your research and find out what each school's professors and alumni have done with their careers. find a school with truly innovative thinkers. i know that sounds like something out of a TED talk, but it's true: the teachers/students you meet in school influence you much more than the skills you learn, especially in a field as subjective as this. any school can teach you tools and software to design, but good taste and the right mindset are much harder to find.
