  1. Shes always been very responsive to me any time I had question. Might take a few days but shes always taken the time to get back to me and has always been very generous with her responses and her time.

Yeah, Lynn's always been good about answering my stupid questions. I even get hand-signed letters in the mail! And to imagine all of the horrible, uninformed, stupid and annoying contacts she gets daily that she has to respond to, on top of doing her regular job of researching and authoring, promoting, and archiving (or whatever historians do.)

  2. If you guys get a chance to lay out the new global 501 cut next to a pair of LVC 1947 501's the similarities are impeccable. I had a chance to do this with a washed pair of 2008 501's and deadstock pair of 1947 501's, both in the same size. The leg shape was exact, not a centimeter off. The only difference I could note was that the 2008 501 was a half inch shorter in rise than the 1947 501. Pocket placement was exact. I also tried both on and could barely tell a difference in cut.

The new fabrics being used (in the US at least) are all Cone Mills denim, to boot! The new fabric they developed is aptly named "global blues," and feels soft, sturdy, and nubbly.

  3. Hey, BlackCherry, those look awesome! That's exactly how I wear my 1947 501's (well, not THAT undersized, but they are very close). I prefer wearing them as high as I can hike them, because it gives me the illusion of actually having an ass. I really don't quite care much for the slouchy look.

  4. [/b](LVC, please get in touch over PM as to where to send that t-shirt as a reward for made efforts, thanks!)

Not quite LVC related, but it looks like the designers at Levi's RED got a hold of this shirt and did a modern version of it in 2003 already, Cotton. I picked one up on eBay a while ago. I love it, but can't keep my room mate from wearing it all the time. Every time I go to wear it, she's left the house with it on! I just need to find her the damn girl's version.

  6. Yes, sounds like they sewed a 1901 oilcloth patch to the 47 jeans by mistake. Which would be the most obvious reason for the '10oz 1947 jeans' story.

It would be hard for the wrong denim to be used given that the 10oz blue-line fabric comes from Japan & is probably more expensive than the Cone product.

They surely must have sewn on the 1901 oilcloth patch. I remember the older 1947 501's having a paper dollar bill tag, and then they started being sold with a new oilcloth tag, with that misinformation about the weight printed on them. The old paper tags mention nothing about the weight.

  7. None of my US LVCs have ever had anything on the jeans stating weight. Sometimes the booklets have weight of what the originals were. My 44s 47s and 55s were all about the same weight. My 33s were 10 oz, my 37s were all heavier and my 20s 201s blue/green line were also heavier. In the 12, 12.5-13 raw range. Somewhere in there. 14 or so after full shrinkage. The 1886s are were around 9 oz raw and my 1905 209 overalls are heavy also. But I don't remember any of them having weight on any of the tags. All were USA made.

Some of the more recent LVC 1947 501's (I had one from 2007) had "10 oz. denim" printed somewhere on the dollar bill patch...

    Which is clearly a typo.

  8. With people starting to find the Spring 08 517s in stores, has anyone spotted the "Beaten Blue" orange tab men's vest that is in the booklet/catalog? Anyone know any specifics about the vest (model/year of repro), or even a retail price?

I only ask because I know LVC stuff can be hard to find and harder to find in-stock or in the right size. I plan on breaking my rule of only buying LVC under $100 and shelling out for this kickass vest, if I can find it. It should look awesome with the '66 deadstock 646.

I've been checking the website daily and called a few stores, but no luck. I did actually call Levi's (whatever the number for US corporate is, someone from the website gave it to me once when I asked too many LVC questions) and got ahold of someone who apparently had access to more detailed pictures than show up in the catalog... she told me that the vest had a buckleback, but that was about the only info I could gather on it.

    Thanks, all.

    - Alex

Called Levi's about this, too... Retail price $250. Strangely enough, the production finish (beaten blue) is supposed to be a light indigo shade with a super soft hand (hence beaten.) So I guess they only show the (raw) prototype in the booklet. They said the Levi's stores probably won't carry this, but once it's out, they'll have info on who does (maybe Barney's.) Hope that helps.

  9. I've been ordering from Dejan for about five years now, and I think Cultizm offers fantastic customer service. I've had problems before (items arriving damaged), but those problems have always been quickly, thoroughly, and professionally resolved. I've never been screwed out of money, and always love the items.

But speaking of money, who gives two shits about an international shipping charge when it costs about the same as domestic shipping and arrives just as fast? Sometimes it pays not to be such a scrooge. (pun pun.)

P.S. The ad has been changed:

"Limited premium clothing with with tax free sales worldwide!"

    Now get over it.

  10. They will shrink probably about 80% after the 3 or 4 wet to dry cycle and it probably will take 10 or so cycles to get them all the way. I would avoid regular wash (hand wash only and air dry) and definately do not dry in a dryer.

Well, it's not only the moisture that will get them to shrink. A part of that has to do with heat, too, and a hot dryer definitely acts as a catalyst for shrinkage.

As long as you make sure to turn them inside out, and eliminate all creases and wrinkles before you throw a pair of wet shrink-to-fits in the dryer, you can get most of the shrinkage to occur right away.

At least that's the story with my last LVC 1947 501's.

If you just throw them in balled up though, you could get a hideous marbelized look from where the wet dye from the denim patches in the fabric.

  11. Thanks, Opie!

Since everyone in this thread has posted mostly vintage / vintage style jackets so far, I don't know if this counts... I had put this up in the supermarket long ago, but have also got one I own.

    Levi's RED Casual/Formal jacket - Fall/Winter 2001

13 oz. denim with a viscose/acetate lining with a celestial star and moon print. Lapels are trimmed in black leather. Arms are cut like a motorcycle style jacket with curved seams.

  12. Were Orange tab a lower end jean ? Or am I correct in remembering that all levis were orange tab and little e from 71 to whenever they switched back?

From what I understand, Orange Tab was not necessarily a "lower end" jean when Levi's launched the line. It was a label which they used to help launch some of their newer fashionable fits, like the 646 bell bottom and 606 skinny, and was targeted at a younger consumer. My mom, who was in high school in the seventies, told me that it was much cooler to have Orange Tab levi's than Red Tab at the time, and that Orange Tab fits were usually a bit more expensive.

Some of the later Orange Tab Levi's I've seen though seemed lower end than their Red Tab counterparts. Levi's was selling Orange tab varieties of their fits in Canada in the nineties, for example, and the main difference between those and their Red Tab counterparts were that the orange tabs had no rivets, and a limited finish selection.

  13. 1971 517s are now on the Levi website:

    http://www.levisstore.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2989801&cp=2068573.2068693&parentPage=family

notice that they are ORANGE TAB...I thought that they were originally Red Tab????

Also, country of origin is given as Imported...I know that that sort of info from the Levi site is unreliable at best, but it sure gives me pause...

The website also says they are a relaxed fit that sits below the waist. I tried them on already at a Levi's store. They hit my bellybutton, are very slim, and made in the USA. Their descriptions are always poppycock.

About the orange tab, though - I was kind of confused, because I thought orange tab's didn't have any copper rivets, but these do. Maybe Paul could shed some light on this?

  14. I picked this selvage jacket up from eBay for $19.

Rather unconventional in cut, but is styled to fit the character of a "Coach Rider" from the turn of the century, and it's made from a beautiful yellow selvage denim. It fits almost like a cropped-length vest with sleeves.

  15. Hello, I am rather new to this board so if I am in the wrong thread, be nice and tell me where I should post. I just bought these jeans with a bunch of other LVC items and am a bit puzzled by them. From the writing on the interior pocket I would guess these came from the Spring 2002 LVC line. There is an interior tag with silver thread running through but it is just the wash tag, not the tag that states the model #. So...was someone in the Levi's factory having fun this day in making a pair of "Frankenstein" pants or were these an actual LVC offering?? Notice the three or four different denims and the gratuitous use of copper rivets....

I'm pretty sure that was just a factory experiment, because I have never seen these LVC jeans, and don't think they were a production version (and glad for it at that, because those are hideous, hahaha.) You're the guy selling a bunch of prototypes on eBay, right?

  16. oipolloi is not that wrong, because the tag of the new 505s says that these will shrink aprox. 10% which as much as 1947 shrink, I guess it´s because they are made of kaihara japan denim last year... but when L32s are actually L34 it´s not bad if they shrink, the length is more important, every waistband will stretch back with some wear and

if it doesn´t work that fast, try my stretch method:

    http://www.superfuture.com/supertalk/showthread.php?p=517563#post517563

    ;)

That's definitely a misprint then. Only shrink-to-fit denim would shrink 10%.

Plus, 505's are a zipper fly. The zipper would get messed up if 10% shrinkage were to occur. That's why only 501's are shrink-to-fit (because they're a button fly.) The 505's should shrink no more than 5% total, and mostly in length.

  17. Thanks, I might have to go for the 1901's...

Just for the sake of it.

Me, too. I'm getting those for sure. That's my favourite 501 fit and they haven't reproduced the 1901 in a while.

  18. I already saw the deadstock 517's in one of the Levi's stores. Also found out from Levi's that the 505's will be offered in a worn-in finish called "Shelter," and the Lady's 606's in Deadstock. Deadstock '47 501's will be offered as usual, though not pictured in the catalog. They said the Levi's stores will be carrying all the 501's from the collection and the Type III jacket.

Sorry about the poor quality of pics, but I had to take these with my digital camera:
