  1. I already asked for some measurements on the size 36. But my feeling is that these are sanforized....

    /QUOTE]

The original first season hemp denim released shrank quite a bit when washed, but wasn't quite a shrink-to-fit. They shrank about 5%, and mostly in the length. I remember getting the 1st shirt and watching it go from a dress to a long shirt when I washed it. My original 1st Giant jeans shrank about 1.5-2" in the length.

Anyone else get a good look at the new collection?

These reproductions look exactly like the originals from the pictures, and I think they did a really good job. I just think it's kind of weird that the labeling says "Levi's Engineered Jeans", even though they're repros of Levi's RED. Unfortunately, though, I won't be getting any pairs, because the waist sizes start at 30". Blast.

If anyone wants to find them online, I gathered a few websites.

  2. These pants are from the Spring 2007 USA LVC collection They've got all the details of the original, such as suspender buttons, slit pockets, flanged outseam, and crotch gusset. Brand new, with all the tags still attached. The fabric is soft and slubby, and the finish looks its age, with many signs of discoloration, rust spots, and scuffs - an authentic looking vintage finish!

Tagged size: W: 33, L: 32. Actual measurements: W: 34, L: 33. Rise: 11". These pants should stretch a little in the waist when worn.

100% Cotton. Made in the USA.

  3. Levi's Vintage Clothing 1960's 606 Super Slim.

From the spring 2007 USA collection. Reproduction of one of the first skinny fits Levi's made in the 60's. They've got all the detailing of the original: orange tab with a big E, and historic denim woven at Cone Mills in North Carolina. The jeans are new with all the tags attached, and retail for $285.

The finish on these jeans is called "Jasper Dark," and is quite authentic looking for a vintage reproduction, with subtle wear and creases.

Tagged Size: W32 L32 - These jeans will likely stretch a bit (as most jeans do) when you wear them. 100% cotton.

Actual Measurements: Waist: 33". Length 32" - These are cut bigger in the waist because they sit on the hips, where you're wider. Rise: 10.25"

    Made in the USA.

  4. Unfortunately Crackerhead, I feel we may be dis-appointed.

When the RED collection stopped for a while in 05, it was carried on in Japan with different cuts.

Last season they released the originals, and I have to say the denim just does not compare.

Yeah, the Japanese rereleases aren't a true or completely accurate reproduction of the originals. Not only was the denim completely different, but so were the sundries, and hardware (buttons, rivets, etc.) According to sources, though, the new collection is supposedly a re-release of the 1999 collection, so I've got my hopes up. At least they'll be using a cotton/hemp blend denim! I guess we'll find out the verdict in a few weeks...

  5. No idea what these ones are, I picked them up in New England a few years ago:

Let's not get these confused with the original Levi's RED line. A few years ago in the US, Levi's started using the label "Red" on a product line that was just souped-up versions of their core fits. Nothing specially really - just the regular stuff with fancy finishes and stitching.

The original Levi's RED line is distinguishable as the cutting edge denim lab that brought forth the designs of the "Levi's Engineered jeans" range (twisted seams), and the Type 1 range, through their experimental designs. It is also one of Levi's few global lines, which for the most part, means that it's one singular collection available in limited quantities each season throughout the world.

  6. haha, what a story! that's brilliant. :)

things like that never ever happen to me. well, we'll see how the re-issue goes...oki-ni will probably put a price i can't afford on these.

Dejan at Cultizm is getting the collection, and his prices are always cheaper than Oki-Ni!

I can't wait. I've got a pair of the 1999 1st Giant in the cotton/hemp denim, but I unfortunately bought them 2 sizes too big, and not knowing any better, soaked the denim to get it to shrink in the waist, which it did not do enough. In doing so, I compromised the excellent finish these have when they're still raw. Been looking for the same model in the right size for years now, so I'll finally have a chance!

  7. Let's hope all this talk about the fabric for the new collection matches the originals, because the hemp/cotton denim from the 1st 1999 RED collection was something otherworldly. It had the most gorgeous shade of natural indigo, backed with a golden glow of hemp, and it was super slubby, with little nubbly spots where the hemp fibers erupted from the surface - one of my personal favourite denims in all my collecting.

Here's a pic of the original 40%hemp 60% Cotton denim vs. the 100% cotton version that came out later. The jeans shown here are both the 1st Standard model.

  8. Not unless you come across some old stock from last season...I haven't heard anything about a Fall release for LVC in the US
I was able to take a look at a buyer's book of LVC items for Spring 2009 in the U.S. So I assume it's not being phased out in the US.

I remember there being a 1966 501,1890 XX, 1937 501, and a weird "Lot 66" bib overall from the turn-of-the-century (not sure of the year), and a 20's sack coat. There were also some 1930's 501 women's coochie-cutter cutoffs with patches on the butt.

A friend at Levi's in the US told me they're going to be getting current Euro LVC until next season, since Taylor Togg's shut down.

As mentioned earlier, I found out that Levi's will be importing a few euro LVC pieces for their stores this season, until next spring.

  9. Horriblyjollyjinx, where are your photos?

Got this craziness today. Selvage collar. HAHAHAHA. The denim reminds me of a pair of deadstock LVC Valencia St. 201's I had, except for a lot greener.

  10. I just got these jeans from the last collection to use as my daily-driver and break in. So far, they've sculpted amazingly, and the waist is super-high for a skinny jean, just like I like it. They've got that nubbly hemp denim, and the entire waistband, fly, and outseams are trimmed in the red selvage, too - very nice detail.

I know there are some haters out there, but Levi's RED isn't for the masses, I suppose.

  11. Tweeds: Just wait for the current collection to become fully available. I've heard from Dejan at Cultizm that the 1st Standard and 1st Giant are being reissued for this collection, and will have hemp denim, like the 1st season originals! I haven't seen them yet to compare them to the originals, but I'm both optimistic and skeptical.

Horriblyjollyjinx: YES! Post, post, post, please.

  12. To answer your question, shorty, yes - most of the pieces were finished. I think I remember the only ones that came in deadstock were the 1947 501, and the 60's 505's.

Thanks...were all those jeans "washed" or were there any rigid pieces? One of the many things I hate about LVC in the US is that most of the jeans they offer are pre-distressed (usually very badly) and then they charge you mucho $$$ for the privilege of buying half-destroyed jeans.

  14. The 1886s and the 1901s have almost identicle fit. They're FULL. I've owned both.

I had the 1886s rolled pretty high. Check the 33s because they also fit very much like the 1901s and the 1886s.

Yeah, I've got a pair of 1901's that seem to fit just a little slimmer on me than the singer's of Tiger Army, but I've also got a pair of 1873 XX that fit smaller in the waist than the 1901's but are WAY fuller everywhere else. I however, I just tried on a current 1901 USA repro that was a lot fuller than my own 1901's. Seems that with today's production standards, there's a lot more leeway for manufacturing tolerances than back when production was quite a bit more limited.

Which leads me to wonder - though a run of seasonal reproductions seems to be such a limited batch of items from a mass-production point-of-view, how does that compare to production runs of actual Levi's in, let's say, 1901? (I ask because my pair of 1901's are hand-numbered out of 1690 pairs, which seems kind of massive for a hand numbered limited production item.) Paul seems to be the master of these peculiar questions. Or maybe I could shoot our girl Lynn an email.;)

  15. So when again did Levi's start using synthetic indigo? Is it probable that the 1875 "Oldest Oldest" jeans would have been made with synthetic indigo, because they seen so much darker than the 1873 XX Blue jean, which only predates it by 2 years.

  16. The only other thing I found out about the new 501's is that they are coming in a few selvage finishes (although they might not be offering a STF in the selvage fabric and new cut... At least not right away.)

Does anyone have info on the newly revived Orange Tab line? I saw on a point-of-sale sign in one of the stores they're marketing them as "inspired by fits from the 60's and 70's." And yeah, I looked at a lady's cut as well, and noticed Levi's tabs with big E's on them as well. I heard they'll be rolling out a men's Orange Tab line this fall in the US, too, with cuts inspired by the 606, 646, and 517.
