  1. Took the plunge on a pair of Trickers Malton (size8.5 , fitting 5 ) from Commonn at £248 . They arrived this morning , free ship next day which was very pleasing . So I am going to give wearing these a go ,as is , ie , no protective sole covering and see how that works out . Ideally in the longer term I will get them resoled commando but as i have my commando soled Sanders there is no hurry . In comparison , as i said in previous posts , the Trickers are made of a higher quality leather but are they worth nearly twice the price ?? Well I am happy to have got mine nearly £80 cheaper than rrp .

  2. Great stuff CTB . Like yourself I have really went for rubber over leather sole . The UK weather dictates it !!! The Eaton are fantastic , have to spread . Local Trickers retailer has a Stow in tan scotch grain with a commando sole which I really like , going to look again this weekend .

  3. Decided to purchase some commando soled boots in Jan and bought some Sanders Cheltenham , these have been worn for close to three months . Great boots and value for money , fully leather lined with bellows tongue .better by far than the Loakes I had previously owned . Polish up fantastically well . Went and bought a pair of Regent (owned by Sanders) dealer boots in tan grain with dainite sole last week , £79 quid new on ebay - bargain !!

  4. mikedbt5, if you're still looking for the Pennines, then keep an eye on this site:

    http://www.robinsonsshoes.com/cheaney-shoes/cheaney-boots-pennine-231-93-.php

They seem to reduce the price randomly, sometimes full price, sometimes 15% or 20% off...I chose the Grasmere over these because the Cheaneys don't seem as sturdy as the Tricker's model, and the Cheaney/Church's shoes I've handled have been nice, but not nice enough to justify the asking price...

I ordered the Pennines from them , they said they had them in stock and then a couple of days later they didn't ! They seem very disorganised , ironinically they are located about 11 miles from me . Fancied the Grasmere but couldnt justify £325 , also I do have a preference for brogues .

  5. I had been thinking of purchasing a commando soled boot since xmas and all the bloody snow . Got messed around by a local retailer on a pair of Cheaney Pennine but ended up with these , a pair of Sanders Cheltenham . Fantastic boots for the price , £175 . Really pleased with these and would recommend them and the online retailer , brogueshoes.co.uk from Edinburgh . James was very helpful in our numerous calls ,first rate service .

  6. Loake Burford , I purchased five weeks ago .The leather Iis supple and has colured well quite quickly . Lashings of brown/oxblood and some black polish applied . Was in my shoemenders today and he had a pair of Trickers Bourton brog shoes in for repair . Firts time i have seen the shoe close up . These are really bulky and heavy with a rounder toe compared to the Loake , QUALITY though !! I have placed an order for some burgundy Loake Royal brogues with a retailer in town , looking forward to these - traditional yet stylish .

  7. This thread has really taken me back to when I used to take some pride in what I put on my feet (beyond decent trainers!), so all kudos to the people in this thread for having helped reignite that passion.

Funny enough a friend and myself had a similar conversation last week . He brought a pair of German army jackboots back from Hamburg before xmas so we got around to talking about boots/shoes . I remarked that whilst they looked really cool they weren't my style and as much as i admire the American workboot posted on the forum I feel the same way about those too . I said to him it probably comes from my background (and age . i'm 45yrs) I was brought up around the shipyard in Belfast and all men wore workboots as they worked ship or aircraft building or as dockers . However , I noticed this more when I went to pubs / working men social clubs with my dad in my late teens , the same men you seen with the work boots and clothes during the week would be in their best suits with amazing highly polished leather oxford / derby / brogue dealer boots in tan , brown and burgundy on the weekend . Really flashy guys in their 30/40/50s with big greasy quiffs and gold jewellry , my dad was the same . That always stayed with me .In the 70s in my early teens , dads would buy thier kids lace up black square toed oxford boots , these then had Blakeys applied to give the clickety sound , I was lucky enough to have these !!! Even now I prefer a stylish traditional dealer / lace up brogue boots or shoe . They do bring the memories flooding back of the 70/early 80s back . The flip side is that the shipbuilding is gone as is the traditional working man and the sense of style and pride in dressing they had .

  8. Sorry for the shite pic, ,but I wanted to share these before they got worn...these are the Grenson brogues I mentioned earlier, picked up for a bargain. I walk around 3 miles a day as part of my commute to work, so these will be braving the elements...

Captured these mid-polish, I'm using a red polish on the tan boots to bring out a richer patina. The rear boot is the original shade, the flash has kinda killed the contrast between them...

Look great CTB . With my tan Loakes Burford I apply a coat of oxblood then a coat of brown polish , nothing fancy and with the boots getting some wear the effect is a subtle copper patina with some darker and lighter shades too . Very pleasing to the eye and friends have remarked on it .

  9. Young Dads? I'm 50 with 2 boys, 7 and 2. Started WELL late.

Was married at 24 though, to missus no. 1.

    Happy New Year everyone.

45yrs with a 22yr old son and 12 yr old daughter . Being a young dad was great ,as was being a dad again in my 30's . Unfortunately it hasnt been practical in my 40's but hopefully I will be a grandad sometime in the future (before 50 would be good!)

  10. Went xmas shopping with my 22yr old son today in Belfast . He picked up a pair of Loake Epsom (waxy finish and commando sole) and I picked these up for £85 (rrp £185) in a shop clearout . Wasn't intending to buy another pair of Burford as I bought the tan model about two weeks ago . But with a £100 discount it was too good to miss .

  11. Are those HH?

You know what , they arent Barkers . I assumed this because of the trees and there is distinguishing labelling internally other than what you seein pic 2 and LEATHER INSLOES MADE IN ENGLAND . However each sole , close to the heel , has and a small cown with 1886 embossed . This makes me believe these are actually Cheaney shoes now , though I am open to contrdiction. Show's one shpuldn't make assumptions . Thanks for your post , I love trying to resolve a mystery .
