  1. the cotton or wool replaces the nylon face in this case, basically these fabrics pass the 'lifestyle gore testing' (note this might not be the exact name for the category but it exists as a testing category I believe) to face any gore testing all fabrics are completely stripped of any DWR before they undergo the testing, which essentially is standing in a shower for something like 10 hours (lifestyle test is just vertical rain pro test is from the sides also) the wearer or mannequin is covered essentially in tissue paper and if after the test there are any wet spots the garment fails,if its dry its good to go, there are also other tests that relate to durability, again these tests are lesser for 'lifestyle'

the issue with these gore faces (cotton/wool) is that although the gore allows it to be water proof in that the water cannot get through, the face fabric has a tendency to absorb water, even with DWR as the nature of the fabrics means they are more prone to abrasion and simply it wears off quicker. the performance issue here is if the face fabric takes on water the jacket a will get heavier and b the water on the face fabric against the membrane will give the feeling of cold to the wearer, which over longer wears if a big negative.

  2. the insulated field is actually core loft (similar to prima loft and said to be better) and this is the fill for all new veilance models I believe, the insulated shell is defiantly produced in xs the issue may be that no retailers have purchased it,in fact it is in stock on the veilance webstore

I think really all you need to weigh up between the 2 is length and if you want a fully insulated hood or not, the field gives you a few inch extra length on the shell and arguably a slightly more classic look over the insulated shells more sporty styling

  3. agreed with above, I would suggest 1 size down from your normal size,to get a fitted look, this should still allow for use of an insulator underneath for the winter also. the new SV version is in my opinion the best yet in the ordesa green colour, the hand on the fabric and the colour make it quite different from previous seasons.

  4. F11 blows away the first 2 seasons in my opinion, colour is great fabrics really well chosen finish is high, its just astep up from the first 2 seasons which were good, this is just better,I think style wise it is just stronger a little more in the undercover camp than s11 was.

  5. I doubt it will cause any issue to hem them,In fact I imagine if you asked them they would say the same, same for all veilance pants they are made with the intention of the wearer taking them up to their desired length.

re hot tumble dry, basically what the outlier pants have is a DWR coating (I believe) from what I understand with this treatment heat re invigorates it, so giving your product the occassional tumble dry will keep its performance optimum.

this is a good light product care guide:

    http://veilance.arcteryx.com/product-care.aspx?EN

to the guy wondering if layering a Field lt will suffice for winter, the answer is yes it will, gore only protects from the elements (wind rain) it dose not keep you warm in the sense of generating any heat,it just protects from cold or wet elements. I would suggest if you want to keep all veilance get the insulator from F11 its a great piece, or the atom from arcteryx outdoor, or you could pick one of the more bargain basement equivalents from other outdoor companys.

  6. I think there is just not any good communication out there,to really explain to people what they are buying, and what it dose for you. I think very often when people are disappointed with a top end tech product it is more a case that they have brought the wrong item for a purpose.

even in this thread the seeming lack of understanding of what a product or fabric dose is pretty high, its not anyones fault as the info is to be honest not fully out there in an easily digestible way,and unless you have a foundation it is hard to take on and understand.

man made fabrics are not cheap, simply in this world nothing good is cheap, you can get a cheap version but you get what you pay for....and that is reflected in the end product,in a tech product finish is just as important if not more than the fabric as that is what sets a part a top end product from one that just looks the part,if you open up a jacket and look at how the taping is finished how neatly how small the seam allowance is etc this is where the craft is,this is where your $$ is going and this is what keeps you dry.

The age old feeling of a heavy garment is a good one also dose not help a modern tech garment for winter in the marketplace as simply average jo picks it up and thinks 'no way can something this light keep me warm enough',

I have 2 jackets which are polar opposites of each other they sort of have the same purpose (extreme warmth) one was designed decades ago as pure function (everest parka) and the other design a year or so ago (insulated shell veilance) they both have their aesthetic merits I brought both for how I look in them, as well as their beauty as a product. but where in the modern age the everest falls down, because it is heavy,it can and dose get damp, its not good in confined spaces, you cant really travel with it as it would take up half your luggage etc, the insulated shell for urban/travel kills it, its good to go warmth wise down to minus 15 or more with just a sweater it weighs nothing and can pack down to about size of a football, it dose not take on water and the insulation even if water got in the fibres do not absorb water (prima loft) both are fantastic pieces but only 1 is really fit for urban use.

the thing is,a sales assistant in a lifestyle store would likely never be able to communicate this to you,the best your likely to get is 'this is really technical'

  7. the thing with ventile especially without the dwr is although maybe the water cant get through,it can and dose sit on the surface and begin to absorb even if this dose not result on actual wetness it will result in cold feeling against skin which can feel like 'wet', this also applies to lifestyle gore (japanese brands mainly as its different rules for gore jp than rest of world) cotton and wool faced if and when the dwr start to deteriorate with wear, the water will not get through the gore membrane but it will sit in the face fabric making the wearer feel cold.

  8. I'm pretty in to S12, I think where S11 had a very tight concept and purpose seeing the line return to individual styles was quite welcome, from a retail perspective I think the line worked much better giving some strong options, from a personal I picked up another 2 pieces for the archive one womens one mens,

  10. the veilance ones are pretty good,(price aside) I pretty much lived in my crew neck ones over the winter along with some rapha ones I was sent which wore more as under layers, the veilance tee for F11 called frame are the best to date in terms of fit and material.
