  1. The Red Sox traded embattled slugger Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers late Thursday afternoon, SI.com has learned.

Jason Bay is headed to Boston as part of the deal, SI.com has learned. The Pirates will get four minor leaguers in the three-way trade.

The Red Sox went back-and-forth with the Marlins and Dodgers as the 4 p.m. ET deadline approached. Ramirez said earlier today, as first reported by SI.com, that he would accept a trade to any team.

The announcement will be made in conjunction with a World Baseball Classic announcement at Dodger Stadium shortly.

The club options on Ramirez's contract for $20 million each in both 2009 and '10 were dropped.

    Jason Bay Traded To Rays

By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 2:11pm CST]

MLB.com's Bill Chastain with the scoop - the Rays have acquired Jason Bay for Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann. The Rays haven't confirmed it yet though, and Rosenthal says the Bucs want to replace Niemann with other prospects. I wonder if Bay would DH for the Rays.

Will we see a Jack Wilson trade next, or will that wait until the offseason? Brignac, 22, is hitting .257/.304/.429 in 91 Triple A games. He probably isn't ready yet. Baseball America still expects him to develop into a solid offensive-minded shortstop.

Niemann, 25, has a 3.53 ERA in 18 Triple A starts this year. He'll probably go straight into the Pirates' rotation. Baseball America feels he has #2 or #3 starter stuff, but his star has dimmed in recent times.

  3. If I was a Marlins fan, I'd be pissed off right now. They were asking for $9m and Manny! That's absurd. They should have been happy that the Red Sox were willing to past nearly all of the $7 million owed Manny. They got too greedy and it cost them an excellent opportunity to win the NL East.

You know, I'm sort of wondering if they did this just to try to block the Phillies and Mets from getting him. It seems like the Bucs could have been the problem too, I think the ownership canceled a trade for Bay recently.

  4. the clock is still ticking. SI says dodgers are back in the picture for manny.

I guess the Sox are into Matt Kemp. So, that would give us a grand total of 3 center fielders...

  5. Rumor is more moves are in the works for the Chi Sox.

Kenny is the Ninja GM - no one sees or hears anything, all of a sudden, movement.

    -Jake

Yea, they wanna dump Cabrera bad huh.

I miss Millar, cant wait till he comes back to do pro bono 1st base coaching for the Sox...

With the Yankees leading 9-2 after six innings, Edwar Ramirez relieved Joba Chamberlain, and his first pitch was a fastball over Millar's head. Just like Tuesday night, when the Orioles' Daniel Cabrera was tossed for hitting Alex Rodriguez in the shoulder, plate umpire Mark Wegner ejected Ramirez.

"One hundred percent," Millar said when asked if he thought the pitch was intentional. "I was upset they threw him out of the game because he's really good hitting. He's a cute little fella, he didn't throw that hard and he doesn't have very good stuff. So it's probably a good idea they threw him out, because it probably would've been in Monument Park."

  6. i agree. involving the pirates and manny's no trade clause might hold things up, but i think it'll get done.

being a yankees fan, i can't wait to see one of the best right handed sluggers go. on the other hand, it's kinda depressing to see the sox lose some character and personality... from damon a while back and now manny. seems like they're turning the club into a bunch of uptight white dudes. at least they still have papi, one of the few sox i really respect.

and yeah, it's still only july, almost august, but i still wouldn't wanna face the angels in october.. they've got a really good club and tex definitely helps them.

I believe Manny told them that he would waive his no trade, he's already let everyone know he wants out and lives in Florida...

Manny leaving is going to be an end of an era in Boston, and is one thing that I will really be sad about, I like the professionalism of the guys on the team now, but I really do worry that they will have no personality. "the Idiots" of '04 were broken up very quickly and ever since it seems like the team has become more and more uptight..not a knock on any of the players, but I will miss the dreads and beards and petting of heads. I guess Manny is just a hanger on from the age of being the team of quirky underdogs. End of an era...

  7. I think this deal will go to tomorrow afternoon, from what I can gather the fish and Sox are haggling over a prospect to go with #24, I bet they want Bowden those bastards.

  8. I wonder if the Sox are talking to the Marlins to spark the Mets to do a trade. Perhaps Minaya will try to block a trade to the Marlins, who at this point are certainly contenders in the NL East, by trading for Manny. I think the Sox would be more interested in what the Mets have to offer.

Minaya can just overpay in the offseason.

  9. we got pudge we got pudge we got pudge!

    Farnsworth and Girardi crying, crazy.

ESPN.com reported that the Red Sox would have to kick in money to help the Marlins pay the remainder of Ramirez's 2008 salary, and that they would want outfielder Jeremy Hermida or Josh Willingham back in the deal, as well as unspecified pitchers.

A Major League source told MLB.com that the trade could involve a third team, the Pirates, and outfielder Jason Bay could wind up in Boston with Hermida going to Pittsburgh.

Bay is hitting .284 with 22 homers and 62 RBIs, numbers that are very comparable to Ramirez's (.301, 20, 68).

    -mlb.com

This is most likely, Hermida is a lefty, we need Bay's right hand behind Ortiz and in front of Drew.

  10. So, Holliday is signed through 2009??

I thought he was a free agent at the end of the season.

    nope, next:

    Matt Holliday of

    2 years/$23M (2008-09)

    • re-signed 1/18/08 (avoided arbitration)
    • 08:$9.5M, 09:$13.5M

Dosent look like the Rockies will be sellers this season either, but they wanted some really good prospects for a releiver, I cant imagine what they would ask for for Holliday.

  11. NYTimes:

The Red Sox are undertaking the difficult chore of trying to trade an unhappy Manny Ramirez, but the slugger will not be headed to Philadelphia. The Phillies have been mentioned as a possible landing spot for Ramirez, who has strong relationship with Manager Charlie Manuel, but Philadelphia General Manager Pat Gillick harpooned the idea on Monday.

“At this point, there’s no interest on our part,†said Gillick, in a telephone interview. “We have no place to play the guy.â€

Pat Burrell, the Phillies’ left fielder, is batting .277 with 26 homers, 61 runs batted in, a .400 on base percentage and a .585 slugging percentage. Burrell’s statistics are close to Ramirez, who is hitting .302 with 19 homers, 65 R.B.I., .400 O.B.P. and has a .531 slugging percentage.

In addition, Burrell is not as divisive a personality as Ramirez, who has infuriated Red Sox ownership with his antics. Ramirez complained that the Red Sox were not forthright about his $20 million contract option in 2009 and he subsequently sat out two games with a mysterious knee injury.

“Burrell has to play left field and I don’t think Ramirez has played right field in seven or eight years,†Gillick said.

The Mets and the Phillies are not interested in acquiring Ramirez, and the Red Sox do not want to trade him to an American League team because they do not want Ramirez to end up hurting them this season. It seems more and more probable that Ramirez will remain with the Red Sox for the rest of the season.

  12. If you haven't read the lengthy New Yorker piece on Manny, you should. You can print it out and read it on the can.

I agree, really interesting read. The mail guy at my work had math class with him in High School, said he wasnt the best student.

This should make for another interesting winter cause they arent going to trade him this season.

  13. they're playing a show at a place called tanglewood, which is nearish to me, the night before I leave on a 10 month trip overseas to a place where there's no live music at all...I'm not even sure whether I can get tickets, but are they worth the hassle? I love all their albums, would it be worth it to see them from the lawn, or would getting seats matter?

Tanglewood is awesome, I saw John Williams conduct there years ago. The lawn is nice, getting a seat might be worth it though...
