  1. Remember the great intro that HBO used to have before movies, with the camera going down a street in a city and then into the country? I used to love that intro, anyway, here is a documentary about how they made it, I cant believe how much time they put into it.

  2. they dont have the ones im searching for :[

There are some that they dont release, I have been searching for one called American Hollow, about backwoods Appalachian family(ies) that was fucking crazy, saw it years ago and it ceases to exist now. There was also a great one about crack in Lowell, MA that had a boxer who fought Ali or someone and was now a huge crackhead, dude was white too.

I have searched before and there was a note about some documentaries not being available, I believe it was on the HBO site, will search again.

  3. I rarely tip coffee places. Should I? I used to work at one for a while and never expected anything unless I did actual work (eg. more than just coffee).

I rarely go to Starbucks, and then I always just get a coffee, I go to Dunkin Donuts a lot and just get a coffee.

When I go to local places they usually hand me the cup and make me pump my own, which is more than fine with me, but then they charge $1.95 for a large, and I wait for my .05 sort of feeling like a dick, but is it more dick to leave them with the .05 for handing me a cup? It took more effort for them to give me change than to do the actual service, and who wants .05?

  4. I agree with all of that. I was at dinner with my Grandfather a few years ago, he was sitting next to me and went to pay the bill for 8 or 10 people, he leaned over pointed to the bill and said, "Tip before the tax." Made sense to me...

I used to valet and you need to give at least $2 every time they get your car, never expected money dropping off but always picking up. If you expect to give one large tip at the end of a stay that's fine, just make sure its a rental car...

Bellman I think $2 per bag is standard.

  6. have you tried kodak porta 160VC? the vivid color may give you what youre looking for, especially if youre using photoshop for color correction and contrast. you can use transparency films such as velvia but when using transparency films, you need to be accurate in exposure to a 1/3 of a stop, which is nearly impossible when using a holga camera. color negative film allows you a lot more room for exposure error.

Touche. I still vote Fuji though... try FujiPro. You should prolly just try a bunch and then decide what you like the best.

  7. can some one recommend me a decent medium format film for use in a holga? after one with strong contrasts and vivid colours. Been using Kodak Portra 400 but its not really cutting it. thanks.

I'm a huge Fuji Velvia fan and I think it would be much better than Kodak for what you are looking for, have a look at the Velvia photogroup on flickr, this might give you a good idea of what kind of speeds you might want to try out. http://flickr.com/groups/velvia/

Worn out by losses, Taylor Togs to close

High-end clothing not enough to save N.C. denim maker

    Jen Aronoff

Taylor Togs, one of the few remaining blue jean makers in the Southeast, is going out of business and will close its two Western North Carolina plants, leaving about 160 people jobless.

The company's sewing plant in Yancey County, in the N.C. mountains, and finishing plant in Taylorsville, about 60 miles northwest of Charlotte, will close by the end of the month, owner Grier Lackey said Friday.

In August, the Observer detailed Taylor Togs' effort to survive in an economy that has been profoundly altered by cheap imports.

The company once profitably produced 60,000 pairs of basic jeans a week for Levi's and Wrangler.

But in recent years, after those companies shifted production out of the country, Taylor Togs tried to stay afloat by making smaller quantities of more expensive -- $150 and up -- premium and vintage-style jeans, which constitute a small but growing segment of the domestic denim market.

Business was a struggle, Taylor Togs management said. And after three straight years of losses that came out of his pocket, Lackey decided it was time to shut down.

In the end, he said, orders were too small, an average of about 1,200 pairs a week, and overhead and labor too high to make a profit. 'We didn't see enough change in the future to justify investing more money,' he said.

Taylor Togs' Micaville plant in Yancey County has cut and sewn jeans for about 50 years. It made its last pair -- a replica of a 1971 Levi's 517 style, part of the brand's high-end vintage collection -- at 12:06 p.m. Friday.

Many of the company's employees had been with Taylor Togs for 30 years or more, and they were aware of its precarious position, Lackey said. He has worked in recent weeks to find them government assistance.

'It's just like breaking up a family,' he said. 'It's very emotional, very hard and very difficult. But I'm a grown man, and sometimes you have to do things in life that are very difficult.'

Lackey said he plans to offer Taylor Togs' buildings for lease or sale in hope of bringing at least a few more jobs to an area that has struggled economically in recent years, amid the departure of furniture and other manufacturing jobs.

Taylor Togs' closing will be keenly felt by its customers, among them Rag & Bone, a New York-based design duo that included labels reading 'handmade in N. Carolina' in its jeans.

'I wish there were more people who thought it was important to make stuff here and have it made by these types of people,' said Marcus Wainwright, a co-founder of Rag & Bone.

Instead, he said, businesses focus solely on profit, often at the expense of character and heritage.

The first plant that made his company's jeans, in Kentucky, also closed. Now, he said, he plans to move production to New York and hopes to buy some of Taylor Togs' vintage equipment and bring up some of its skilled workers to help get started.

Lackey said government trade policy has made it difficult for businesses like his.

'People put their heart and soul into privately owned businesses ... (but) there's just too much competition. It's a thing a lot of people are having to go through. I'm not in a boat by myself.'

'I think that's what made America great, our ability to produce a product better and cheaper than anyone else in the world,' he said. 'I hope we can survive on the service industry.'

  9. Jays brought him back as a hitting coach for a little bit in the late 90s. Other than that, probably living the good life in Florida. Besides, the Jays are a disaster and Ricchardi is on his way out. Maybe we'll bring back Pat Gillick and sign Rickey Henderson.....
they should bring Joe Carter back to DH

    wheres paul molitor?

Mike Timlin....STILL on the Red Sox.

  10. colon didnt have to swing that hard....

Hard to stop once you've got all that momentum going...

an open letter to willie randolph-

You're a fucking bitch. stop crying. you're collecting a check so shut up. you sucked at managing and exerted no control over the team. stop writing 2 page musings in the daily news about life not being fair and peppering it with your love of the negro leagues.

    sincerely,

    fuck you

Seriously, didn't that happen last week already? Now hes sayin that Manuel stabbed him in the back? Shit, I'd be makin nice with management if I was Manuel too, make sure I have a job after the smoke clears...

In other news, Schilling is done (for the season at least and probably his career), will have surgery Monday, too bad, but not really surprising. I feel like this is not the last we have heard from him though.

And Jeter is the most overrated player in baseball.
