  1. jiomitori, I get what you're saying, but on the other hand it looks like you are picking up the Eternals instead of the LVC, not a knock at you, I'm guilty of the same thing, so it is a bit of our fault as well...

Your comparison of car companies is a good one for Levis, look at any of the big 3 US car companies who were blinded by thinking that noone could be better than them (or that they were only competing against eachother) and they could run the market with boring designs while cutting down on quality.

Should be interesting to see if some foreign company swoops in and tries to buy Levis while the dollar and the company are so weak.

  2. Hmmm... I never thought about them picking up the option(s) and then trading him. But I'm not so sure the Red Sox would want Reyes since they have a bonafide prospect in Jed Lowrie. Reyes is an amazing talent, but Lowrie's good and a lot cheaper.

I like Lowrie a lot and really think that the guy deserves a shot soon, Ive heard that he is a much better fielding 2B, so I wonder how much thought they've given to putting Pedroia at SS, I believe he came up there anyway.

Another future trade theory I have is that there is a big battle brewing for Hanley Ramirez and a lot of teams know it. He wanted a no trade clause in his new contract and the Marlins wouldnt do it, so at some point they will be dangling him for Sox/Yankees prospects (jeter to 1B) Come home Hanley!!!

  3. The company reported revenue of $936m to 25 May, with $1.001bn in the year-earlier quarter. There were revenue increases in Europe and Asia Pacific but they only partly offset weak US sales. Net income fell from $46m to $1m.

Regarding that article, I don't see how it's possible for Levi's revenue to go from 1001 bn to 936m, I think it must be a typo.

    1001m=>936m.

There's a decimal point in there, its $1.001bn..

  4. I'm starting to wonder if the Sox will exercise their option on Manny.

    I having a feeling they won't

He needs to show that he can still hit a fastball. I think they will pick it up regardless, and possibly use him as a barganing chip (him and a prospect or two to Mets for Reyes?!?!?!??) next year.

I'll miss him, but it looks like hes in the dee-cline (hopefully just a slump)

Levi's profit plunges 98 per cent as young shun its jeans

    By Leonard Doylein Washington

    Thursday, 10 July 2008

Levi Strauss's second-quarter net income plunged 98 per cent because of weak sales of Dockers and Levi's. The company – which began making its famous jeans in San Francisco in 1853 and which is one of the world's largest brand names in clothing – is considering moving its headquarters and all 1,000 employees across the Bay Bridge to Oakland to save money.

Levi Strauss is not the only clothing company in dire financial trouble. Steve & Barry's, the fast growing discount fashion retailer which is much loved by Sarah Jessica Parker, is expected to file for bankruptcy protection.

The collapse of Steve & Barry's will send shock waves through struggling shopping malls across America, which pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into luring the company into cavernous, empty spaces, some as large as 100,000 sq ft. All of those 275 shops may now close and the company's 16,000 employees are expected to be sacked. Anticipating a Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding, some vendors have halted shipments to the company.

Levi, which has a presence in more than 110 countries, has suffered through several years of declining sales as younger consumers gravitate to new brands. Wal-Mart's decision to cut back on Levi's inventory as it tries to shore up its own declining sales has also hurt.

The company reported revenue of $936m to 25 May, with $1.001bn in the year-earlier quarter. There were revenue increases in Europe and Asia Pacific but they only partly offset weak US sales. Net income fell from $46m to $1m.

In a conference call with reporters, Levi officials blamed computer software for causing a temporary block on orders being shipped to retail customers for a week. A number of retail customers have also cancelled orders, the officials said.

Levi's chief executive, John Anderson, expects US economic conditions to remain tough in the second quarter. Levi expects the rest of the year to be challenging, he said, "given the slowing macroeconomic indicators we are seeing globally."

Sales of the iconic brand topped out at $7.1bn in 1996, after which Levi went through an eight-year sales slide. The company is privately owned but has publicly traded bonds and therefore reports its earnings.

Mr Anderson took over in 2006 and has promised to make Levi more competitive and responsive to fashion trends.

  6. anyone not horrified by both long island and my screaming mini-kunks is welcomed to pop over as i'll be bbqing on saturday and sunday for a bunch of people.

I like some of Long Island, how far out are you?

BBQ in Rhode Island on 4th. Red Sox vs. Yankees on 5th and possibly 6th.

  7. Lets go Wake! No one likes a dome more than he.

So, I was thinking about this yesterday, the last series of the reg. season between the Yanks and Sox is at Fenway and if the Rays are in 1st and the yanks do what they've done before and have a post allstar break surge, we could be in for a very interesting wildcard series... Also it would be something if the Yankees missed the playoffs and their last game of this year is played in Boston and not at the old stadium.

Anyone see Moss' fly that hit the roof of the dome? I didn't think we could loose after that, but the bottom of the lineup proved me wrong again.
